Oh, and btw America did not create western culture. Rather, America is the most recent addition to western culture. Your typing in English, using Latin text. Your also using the world wide web, a British idea. The computor too, was also British. In your post, your debating politics, a feild first codified and heavily influensed by Ancient Greek thought. Your country was founded by European's, upon European ideals (John Locke's political philsophy) and populated largelly by Europeans. America is only at the tip of the iceberg that is "Western Culture".
Good point, but in my defense, I had "western" culture in quotes for a reason.

That reason being, American culture has become nearly synonamous with western culture in the eyes of many. For example, American music and celebraties (sp) pervade the airwaves across the globe. Also, Hollywood movies are seen just about everywhere, but, you'd be hard pressed to find European, Indian, or Asian cinema anywhere outside there points of origin, with the exception of a few.

My point being, American culture, in the artsy, media, sense of the word, is commonly accepted as "western culture." But, you make many goods points as well, they just weren't really what I was referring to.

We British are sometimes thought of as more intelligent than other English speaking nations (at least by British tabloids at any rate). I have to tell you, if I asked those questions to your typical kid on a British street I could get even more dumb answers than those. Don't look for reasons to feel superior to other countries, creeds, and cultures, because we all have skeletons in our greenhouse.

You did WHAT? What is wrong with you?! People are fighting and making websites all over the world. Brave men and women have put their bandwidth on the line to stop this man. He is a menace and a danger to all civilized nations, and needs to be stopped. As far as I am concerned, people who harbour terrorists watch Michael Bay movies are betraying their nation.

a lot of countries allow their citizens to be racist, homophobic, conservative, and xenophobic. they're just not. thus his point stands.

oh yes capitalism definitely lets the lower working class have freedom. they're absolutely not modern slaves at all. if they'd just get off their lazy asses every persn in america could own five cars an a mansion.
Sorry I don't share the same beliefs as you, I just think that what is mine is mine and not the government's. If I want to give my money to other people, then I will, but I don't want other people to force me to give up something I have worked for. If people are in an economic hole, then they should apply for financial help while they look for a job, not just because they want to get a check for doing nothing.
ok maybe that criticism of capitalism was a bit obtuse. You do share my beliefs, because on a purely me level I fucking love the system since I will be making frankly ridiculous amounts of cash after I get my degree. But I've actually done my research so I know capitalism doesn't work. that's the difference. I like my property as much as the next person, big house nice car it's all good, but I know the actual cost of those things.
It works pretty well for me. I think it is an incredible system (so simple, all it is is "Reap what you sow.").
ok if that's how you think capitalism works I can't have a conversation with you. Why? because it'll get us no where and I don't feel like wasting my time.
Same here. I don't really want to get dragged into another political thread ever again. These things just keep popping up, and they never get locked. It just got to the point of annoyance about a month ago. Feel the same?

no I like my politics (real politics not American "politics") I just don't want to waste time talking to someone I can't reason with.
Hmm. I like my politics, too, and I feel exactly the same as you do, to a degree. Think of this: you aced your last test, but your teacher approaches you and gives you a paper that has 50% of the grade you actually earned. You will likely say "What the hell? This is graded wrong!", whereas your teacher replies "Oh, you got a hundred, but I redistributed the grade you earned with all of the other people who didn't do as well as you." This is why I appreciate capitalism: You get what you earned. People who aren't as successful as you need help, but I don't believe the government should just TAKE your money. Oh, and you technically are still talking to me, and thus wasting your time. Sorry.

No, to make the analogy correct you'd be sitting in class, then, whilst the teacher's not looking, steal the nerdy genius next to you's exam paper and smack him with a 2-by-4 and then submitting his work in place of your own, getting 100% and a scholarship to the best school in the state. Then throw a party to celebrate and sleep with the nerd's girlfriend or something.

You're so right! We are so far behind other Western countries! After all, we are stupid enough to think that privacy is a good thing. Why can't we be more like Britain and monitor our citizens every move?

Or perhaps we could be more like Germany or Australia, each of which uses excessive censorship and banning in video games. And if ONLY we had that 50%+ tax that all Swedish citizens have to pay.
...It's like the patriot act and Guantanamo never existed. >_>

Well unlike England we have a right to self-defense. If you hit your mugger in the U.K. you get arrested. It's like a bad Russian reversal joke.

Melting pot of many different cultures and races.

Pretty cool government set up.

And most importantly, Americans live in America. And that has made all the difference.

I put down bad because of the prevalence of global warming denialism, the racial views I've seen expressed CONSIDERABLY on the internet who are ALL American. I put down bad because 31 states when put to a popular vote decided not to legalise gay marriage. I put down bad because the extreme prejudice I have seen from Americans to Mexico. It seems to be almost the equivalent to talking about the weather to insult Mexico. I also put down bad because many Americans (on the internet) insult Canada very frequently, and find every opportunity to attack both Canada and Mexico. I put down bad because of the constant insults against "the south," which to me suggests that "the south" is a pretty good place. The honest truth is that any comment with "y'all" in it has been the smartest and most respectful comments I have ever seen from Americans, despite the views of some of those who must be from "the north." I put down bad because Sarah Palin was considered to rally the base of the Republican Party. Any country where Sarah Palin could run to be the person to take it over if the leader of her party dies, and where her party is still considered equal to the incredibly exceptional other party, is definitely below the average of the developed world. The healthcare debates their are pretty embarrasing to humanity. I sincerely hope that the constantly yelling people are in the minority, and their "views" are not mainstream. Also, the number of people who think that Obama was born outside the U.S. is pretty incredible, and also an embarrasment to humanity. I also put bad because of some Americans with an incredible sense of superiority over others and other nations. I put down bad because Obama is one the best presidents the U.S. has ever had, and there probably won't ever be anyone better, yet his best shot for the environment is a little vehicle emissions cap, as well as cap and trade. This HUGELY reinforces the misconception that global warming is all the fault of the "corporations" and that the "corporations" need to be taxed as punishment for "their" greenhouse gas emissions. The people who buy it are capable of no evil is what it sounds like to me. That's one of the main philosophies of communism, and Obama so readily endorsing it concerns me.

However, on the positive side, OBAMA WON! But seriously, the fact that Obama was finally elected is part of the reason I did not put down "very bad." Certainly Bush won a second time, which definitely made me shake my head in shock and awe (lol) at the United States and wonder how this was considered a sane country. However, maybe Kerry was crazy or something, and in any case Obama was elected. Those Americans I have met personally have all been wonderful people. But to suggest that the U.S. is somehow the same as the rest of the western world is very ridiculous. I respect those who defend and point out that the majority is not like the ridiculous people you see sometimes, but to compare all of the U.S. to the western world and claim it's equal, the same, pretty homogeneous, is ridiculous. For all those people who thought it was somehow better than the rest of the western world, you strike me as a stereotypical American. However, I do fully recognise that there are many high minded Americans, but I also recognise that there are many low minded Americans, which the people who marked good may have overlooked. Anyway, I apoligise to all Americans of sane mind reading this. There's many things about the U.S. I like, and many I don't like, let's leave it at that. I didn't put "very bad" down for that reason.

I'm the only one in my class sitting down. Sometimes I think "Wow, I feel stupid..." Then I think "Wow, they're stupid..." and the feeling passes.

I'm an American citizen, and people try to tell me I should be patriotic and all that crap. In school they play the pledge of allegiance over the loud speaker as everyone else stands chanting it in a cult-like manner as I stand in confusion at their actions.

What is so good about this country? We were founded by men who, although having good ideals for the rights of man, still advocated slavery. In fact, we were the LAST western country to get rid of slavery.

Before that, the continent was "discovered" (a good 400 years after it was found by the vikings and thousands of years after settlement of it by the Indians) by a murdering, enslaving, twat (Christopher Columbus) who had no qualms about killing for greed.

Other than our initial founding as a nation, which, although including slavery, was progressive for the time- we've consistently fallen behind of other western nations in level of freedom granted to their citizens, and the level of economic cooperation facilitated between our citizens.

So, I ask you, the people of the Escapist:

What's so good about America, if there is anything?

edit-

I actually am quite fond of American culture. I just dislike our government and its opperations.

edit-

someone demanded that I own up to being a socialist, because apparently that's a really important detail
You gotta get your facts straight. In the original constitution slavery was banned. They had to allow it so they could get South Carolinas vote.

Chris columbus never enslaved any indians. That was after his time.

OT: Our government is a little corrupt. The average citizen doesn't have a strong enough impact as we claim. We are one of the most wealthy nations and have one of the strongest armies. If you don't think america is to great why do we have the highest immigration percentage not counting illegals.

We have our quirks, but they are less severe than most other countries. I say to you what I say to others. Don't like it, get out.

They've just as much right to live there as you, like it or not and that's not because your country is awesome, they just happen to have that freedom.

why does america seem to have such a problem with socialists? never understood that.

OT: While i like americans as individuals the country itself from where i'm sitting here in the U.K. comes across as rather egomanic, controlling, saying one thing while doing another and convertly trying to build a religious empire whilst condemming other empires (many of which they worked to disband after the world wars).

I know that may come across as extreme to many, but it is a pretty accurate condensed version of what many people here i know, and know about, feel.

Jesus what a cluster fuck. Stop hating on Americas government. Judge it as a country, the only reason we get into so much shit is because we are free to be a racist, politically incorrect, bigoted, and fat as we want and I wouldn't have it any other way.
