I'm an American citizen, and people try to tell me I should be patriotic and all that crap. In school they play the pledge of allegiance over the loud speaker as everyone else stands chanting it in a cult-like manner as I stand in confusion at their actions.

What is so good about this country? We were founded by men who, although having good ideals for the rights of man, still advocated slavery. In fact, we were the LAST western country to get rid of slavery.

Before that, the continent was "discovered" (a good 400 years after it was found by the vikings and thousands of years after settlement of it by the Indians) by a murdering, enslaving, twat (Christopher Columbus) who had no qualms about killing for greed.

Other than our initial founding as a nation, which, although including slavery, was progressive for the time- we've consistently fallen behind of other western nations in level of freedom granted to their citizens, and the level of economic cooperation facilitated between our citizens.

So, I ask you, the people of the Escapist:

What's so good about America, if there is anything?

edit-

I actually am quite fond of American culture. I just dislike our government and its opperations.

edit-

someone demanded that I own up to being a socialist, because apparently that's a really important detail
Money is the answer. You guys earn ridiculous wages compared to other countries. Here, a psychologist fresh out of university may charge the equivalent of 15 dollars an hour, if that much, which is what a store clerk in the US makes. Hell, your workmen make 18 K a year, which is incredibly high.

We British are sometimes thought of as more intelligent than other English speaking nations (at least by British tabloids at any rate). I have to tell you, if I asked those questions to your typical kid on a British street I could get even more dumb answers than those. Don't look for reasons to feel superior to other countries, creeds, and cultures, because we all have skeletons in our greenhouse.
But there werent kids, they were adults. One of them might have been early 20s, but they are adults. Thinking that mount rushmore is in australia. Every single british man/woman/child would know that big ben isnt in australia, yet these americans prove that their education system clearly sucks.

I'm Canadian,
My problem with America is the corruption and greed.
And personally I find the majority of patriotic Americans unbearable.
But the leaders are worse.

You gotta get your facts straight. In the original constitution slavery was banned. They had to allow it so they could get South Carolinas vote.

Chris columbus never enslaved any indians. That was after his time.

OT: Our government is a little corrupt. The average citizen doesn't have a strong enough impact as we claim. We are one of the most wealthy nations and have one of the strongest armies. If you don't think america is to great why do we have the highest immigration percentage not counting illegals.

We have our quirks, but they are less severe than most other countries. I say to you what I say to others. Don't like it, get out.
Well Columbus took several natives back to Spain, which is about as bad as enslaving them i guess. He also did a bunch of other bad things like rape and genocide.
And while it's true that the USA is one of the richest nations on earth the distribution is pretty lopsided, also having a lot of people trained to kill people isn't really something to be proud about.
Oh yeah and Canada has the highest immigration rate in the world. Sorry bud. I guess America receives a lot of immigrants because everyone's using it as a pit stop on the way up north ahaahaha

Wow, everyone is flaming about nationalism. Who could have guessed that?
OT: I'll give it average. There are far worse countries, but it could treat people better. But I'm not going to be like most people and judge the majority by the few.

The Right to Bear Arms is awesome. I love the furry claws I own.

Seriously though, I'm so anti gun control, I'd feel better if everyone were packing. Except some of the kids in the school. (I'm thinking you need a minimum gpa to get one, or at least let teachers have them) It has been proven in 2 states that concealed weapons reduce the amount of violent crime (? i think that was the category).
True, I mean, who would rob someone you think would shoot you...

But I notice Canada has similar laws, but it requires a lot more education before you can get them. That's the key, firearm education.

Ordinarily I wouldn't fix gramatical errors like this. However, as the poster was pontificating his own superiority so I felt it was only fair.

Are you really suggesting that I couldn't get equally ridiculous answers from citizens on English, Australian, or Irish streets? Do you think these were the only people interviewed? Or do you possibly think they spent a few days grabbing people randomly and then edited the finished product so only the dumbest answers would be the ones in the program?

Wow. Excellent post. I would add that the outright hostility in the USA towards giving poor people benefits is a bad black against the political orientation of the nation, as well as some of the (frankly) sophomoric objections to state healthcare. I also think that Guantanamo Bay was an absolutely appauling disgrace.

Even though I hate most of the people I love this place, I say the plege as a tribute to the millions of men, the many generations who fought and died to give my country men the right to choose for themselves. Sure a lot of those men are stupid, and a lot of our laws are flawed but at least our world leaders don't dress up like a bear and claw christians to death. You gotta love the Romans.

As for what's so good about the USA(you should really change America to USA, it kinda makes you seem ignorant to the fact that you could also call Canada and Mexico part of America) is that I can go out and say "Fuck Obama I disagree with everything you stand for and hope you die" and not get blacked bagged(by the government anyway). Basically the enforcement of human rights. And weather or not we were the last to do that who cares? You didn't live in that time and eventually we changed.

I'd like to point out that other countries have the same liberties as the US (perhaps more, exception: guns), with quite bloody histories, yet still have functioning economies, no foreign debt, very few murders and general gun-violence, and hardly any soldiers abroad...

What's not to like about US Soldiers abroad?
If it weren't for us, our nice little friends across the DMZ probably would not keep renewing the truce every year in Korea.
Come to think of it, that's the only thing I can think of right now.

Why not?
It keeps the boogey men away for the most part. And when it doesn't, some nation gets a can of "Police Action" via the USMC and a handy Nimitz class ship. (Unfortunately, we aren't in WW2 so now we have to genuinely nation build instead of glassing them, thats where the bad part comes in)
