My rule is- If you need unneccessary Xs or numbers on your name, you suffer from a chronic lack of creativity. Also If your name is in MiXeD UpPeR anD LoWeR CaSe letters, you deserve to die. No offense anyone here, just generally applies to XBL.
On a side note, I love how a person's username becomes a kind of second persona. Very...Thought provoking.

I don't actually have an Xbox live account or anything, but my tags on my PC shooters tend to be nonsensical but legible. a_pink_fairy (just cause it's funny to be killed by "a_pink_fairy" in some serious war shooter) is one handle, and I think one of my Halo tags was simply Foghorn Leghorn. I do find the indecipherable symbols and clan tags kind of silly, but it helps those guys identify each other and such, so I don't really let it bother me.

I hate names that are extreamly elaborite or are 3 words mixed with no indication on how to pronounce it.

Like imdapwningbeast, yeah, try reading that in the heat of battle (MW2 for instance). They can't atleast do ImDaPwningBeast, see how much easier that would be to read, granted its still not the easiest but its more managable.

I also hate when its Xxjo3shm0xX, thats just annoying.

And its even worse when every letter is a number, YOUR NOT COOL FOR USING NUMBERS, YOUR S STUPID IMMATURE LITTLE KID.

*cough*

sorry bout that.

My name is just one word or maybe two, but easy words to read and theyre SEPARATED BY SOMETHING CALLED THE SPACE BAR.

Like my Escapist name for instance Supreme Unleaded, two words easily distinguished and separated.

Yeah it's so annoying...
Anyway, my number is the answer to the ultimate question; to life, the universe, and everything, so who are you to argue?
EDIT: I forgot which username I use on this site, I usually use reg42
Yeah, as long as it's 42 it's alright. But any other number... ARGH!

I don't know. I can't complain since mine isn't very original.

Just my name and year I was born.

The only time i use numbers in my name is when some prat has already stolen Demonickitten. Then I revert to Demonickitten666 (the last three numbers represent something, obviously). But i can't understand why people chose to have their names with numbers or random letters unless neccessary.

A bit of originality always helps. I honestly can't make a username with a number in it (eg if its been used up). My xbox live live was Assferatu before I sold it- if you get my gist :)

I agree, and so i usually go for the pointlessly longer made up words like mine, i always thought it was easily pronouncable but some of my friends are like whaa? maybe they just too lazy to read 11 letters.

Ohwell my friend made his xbox live account what he thought was Timeshifter and was so amazed that it wasnt taken, turns out he spelt it wrong :S

I happened to luck out when choosing a username. I am the only "AvsJoe" out there last I checked so I'm thankful that I don't have to use any underscores or x's or numbers in my username.

dood are you like 9 years old? Any way, i chose my name way back. Its homophone of my real name. Alex=Ahlycks. I chose it because who else is going to?
For some reason I couldnt figure that out... I kept on thinking "Ass licks" until you pointed out it was Alex...

OT: My LIVE tag has a "1" instead of an "i" because I forgot I had already taken my name with my other gamertag... and now my tag has gotten too powerful for me to switch to the other tag... :O

I dislike generic "noobish/troll like" names.
I love mine. Look at my originality and be jealous!
Greetings, fellow demented person. According to google, I am the most unhinged rabbit on teh interwebs, as there are no other March Hares that can claim the title of "Maddest" as their own.

We should join forces and unleash deranged, fluffy chaos upon what humans know as "Earth".

OT:I try to be original, look at my Xbox live name, no numbers either! :D

Agreed 100%.

My friend's girlfriend's email has xiiilightningx somewhere in it.
I guess she's a FF fan, but things like this are inexcusable.

My PSN is Noobadinen. It is a cross between Noob and Paladinen, which is the Swedish word for "The Paladin".

HUBILUB is just a name I figured out by... typing random letters.

But I never use those stupid xX_____Xx names or with letters. They are evil!

Often enough numbers just make it so that you can keep your name if it's taken. I try to avoid that as often as possible and people who dont see the issue with it often enough (that i've noticed) don't really give a shit about originality. Not to say that they think it's usless but that it's not very important to them generally. Me I highly value it so I choose the name of The Griffin in one of my novels. (Turns out it's a name of an angel who knew.)
