One of the primary reasons that I can see for America not being as big and cool as in the history books is because all of the stuff in the history books is about important and trying times in our countries history. We invented the telegraph because we needed a way to communicate over long distances quickly when the country was first being built. We built a better gun(the revolver) because we needed a more efficient way to "eliminate" problems. We did so well in WW2 because of our exceptionally innovative war bent minds, and the people who turned non-war bent inventions into tools of destruction.
The primary reason for what has happened to this country is because it has become stagnant. All of our recent "challenges" involve bombing some poor country to kingdom come and then dropping food on it. What we need is to have our power stripped from us. Right now, we are the big kid on the playground. There are only two ways for our country to return to its former glory. The first is for another big kid to show up and start bullying the other countries, like Germany during World Wars 1 & 2 or Russia during the Cold War. The other is for some big nasty disaster coming and stripping us of all our power and prestige.
We have become stagnant(fun word). The best thing we can do is force our country off of its laurels and make it do something. But the only way for that to happen is for us to do it first. Stop complaining that nothing amazing has been invented in our country and go out and invent it. Make the first gun that shoots shurrikens and lightning(really cool weapon), make a fully interactive 3-D game, build a better computer, write an innovative novel, any of the above or nothing else on the list, but do something.

Pride is overrated. Every country has something to be ashamed of (except maybe East Timor, 'cause they've all got balls of steel). There's nothing especially wrong with the U.S.

Or rather, there is, but it's not particularly unusual. It's just much more obvious to us because we're watching stuff happen here firsthand...and unlike most of the country's past, we can actually see what we're doing.

This reminds of when Henry Kissinger visted a Chinese diplomat on a vist (forget the name and position); Kissinger asked the diplomat:

"What do you think the long-term effects of the French revolution will be?"

The diplomat shurgged his shoulders and simply replied:

"It's too early to tell."
...that's an incredibly bizarre question. If he's asking what the long-term effects of an event that happened 150 years previously already in the future tense, isn't that answer to be expected?

America flamewars? There hasn't been any on this thread...I was only opening a discussion on what America does that's good today, and why people's perceptions of America are the way they are.
I meant no personal offense, man. Relax. First off, this thread has been done to death. You could have searched, but that isn't a complete rule of The Escapist, just a suggestion. Unfortunatley, because I saw a thread a few hours ago about the exact same thing. Now, I'm going to tell you, through the miracle of science, how this thread will go.

1. America is awesome. We rule.
2. America is OK, we have our flaws but we're alright.
3. America is a terrible country, everything they do is wrong.

There you go. Formulate those 3 opinions and make responses for each and there you have the thread. Please, just do a search, just try man. I've been here almost a year, I've seen these threads before, don't think I'm just spouting ignorance.

Just be thankful God gave you a superior brain. Unless you don't believe in a higher power... then thank your mom... and if you don't have one of those... than... fuck.
This is all it gets us, man. I'm telling you.

EDIT: This is the thread from about 5 hours ago. Five hours. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.130056

Perhaps I paraphrased it wrong; the essence of the question, and the point I was trying to make, still stand.

At first you were taught the old history book image of America as a shining beacon that can do no wrong. And now you believe the contemporary image that America is a nation of lazy pigs ruled by evil corrupt politicians.

Neither of these views are correct; America has always had its ups and downs. Our government has had scandals and corruption throughout history; just look at the presidency of Warren Harding. And we have plenty to be proud of today, besides Silicon Valley, like giving aid to more countries than any other western nation, or coming back after the worst terrorist attack in history.

America has never been perfect or something to be ashamed of. It is, and has always been, shades of gray.

Oh crap, I think I just initiated stage 2.

If the rest of the world looks at us as fat lazy people, that doesn't mean that they are right; any person that spent time in america would notice that notion is very misguided. Like we have misguided views of other parts of the world based on stereotypes (french have mustaches and baguettes) it wouldn't take very long in the other country to see how unfounded those views are and that we really arn't very different. Also to say that we have no exports can be solved by googling 'what does the US export' we export quite a few things.

Probably because said country is responsible for quite a lot of horrible things in the world. The fact is, we're the biggest oil importer, and we're the biggest food importer. This leads to people rightly thinking that Americans are fat. The last I checked, the average American weighed about 300 pounds. We're gas hogs, and, for the most part, we spend gas on a commute that could be done by bike or foot.
i recently came across a study that said that the europeon nations were fatter than us
ill try and find it later

Now I wouldn't go so far as to say war is good, just necessary.
Also, might I say even though we are stagnant, we do have some fun toys, like monster trucks, rockets that can reach incredible heights(bought in the private market), people who can shoot the wings off gnats for fun, athletes that are so perfectly trained that if we ever had to put them into direct combat the enemy would be screwed so royally the Queen of England would feel it, and all of this cause we are bored. Imagine what would happen if we were ever faced with a major threat.

because the u.s has been doing to much activity, political and military, to avoid an extreme amount of critisism.

I like McDonald's from time to time, but I'm not quite a mouth-breather. The problem lies in the fact that it's how the world perceives us that's difficult to swallow. I realize I need to break out of the pack, much like the millions and millions of others who don't fall into the category of "typical stupid American" it just bugs me that we got there in the first place.

Also, may ye be touched by His Noodly Appendage

the trouble is that we've become too lenient. we need to take a harder stance on things. its good to be nice but im sick of this humanitarian bullshit of pandering to incompetence and to the undeserved. we are too politically correct to be upfront and say that someone shouldnt get something because they dont deserve it. we are to scared to offend everyone so we just ***** out. i also have major issues with the media and their extreme biases and general retardation of "news" such as devoting unbalanced time to both views or having just a gross under representation of both sides.

by the way im sick of people getting all up on the war in iraq. sure some people have died and its a kinda fucked up situation but there have been vast, and i DO mean vast improvements in the quality of living in that area and for those who complain about the soldiers, i dont mean to sound callous, but it is their job and they knew when they enlisted that there was a very real possibility of them being sent into real combat situations. as well as the fact that there are under 5000 deaths total for the coalition forces, even less for america. compare this to the almost half a million military casualties for america in ww2. to compare it numerically its less than 5,000<<<<500,000.... so stop bitching and man up. soldiers jobs are to put their lives on the line in patriotic service to their country so stop pussyfooting around that fundamental fact. needless waste of lives is an atrocity but this is even worse

Some Pommy historian once said that America either wishes to remain completely uninvolved or to be the masters of the game. Looking through your history that certainly seems true. You guys tended to remain isolated from the rest of the world until you were forced into helping, then took control. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure most countries would want to do that. You guys just have the resources to get away with it and others resent you for it.

Mind you, your politicians have fucked over a fair few countries such as Chile and Poland, but the whole country shouldn't be blamed for that.

And I'm unimpressed with Obama. When he tries to make friends with the Russians and Iranians I'll be impressed, but right now he's just another elitist liberal arse.

Praise be to Him! I swear, this whole country's full of unevolved pirates!

Fake ones, of course. If they were real ones, we wouldn't have this global warming problem.

Is there anyone else that wishes the mods would step it up a little? I mean, we have a great community and good moderation most times, but 24 hours of abortion and America flamewars is quite a bit much.
I tossed up the idea of locking everything, but for the most part people are being civil (Not friendly, but civil) and intelligent. Ideas are being discussed, words tossed and facts debated. There are worse things for the forum to do with its time.

Besides, remember the golden rule: All this has happened before, and will happen again.
