My actual favourite is Star Control II, though arguably, that's not only an RPG, since it's also a Space Exploration/Action/Resource management/Adventure game. Yes, I'm not kidding, it has all those elements and a sense of humour.
Sir, I salute you. I was considering saying that, too, but I wasn't sure if it was RPG-ish enough to count with all the other stuff going on in it. There haven't been a whole lot of other games to combine so many different things and manage to do them all so well since then, even though they've had nearly 20 years to try.

How can you list classics and not have any Origin stuff there!
Ultima 3 and 4 here!
I really wanted to like Ultima when i was a kid cause it looked so cool.
But when playing, I was let down... I was a console RPG type though.

I remembered thinking that leveling was pointless in Ultima since you needed to talk to the King and it just made the enemies harder. So it was beatable at level 1... Funny how Oblivion is kind of like that...

But I still give you points for mentioning Ultima as it did indeed have MANY fans.

Cheers!
I played my first Ultima on the apple 2e in like.. 1983/84? So this is definatly back to classic days when Documentation was an absolutle minimum, and What to do and where to go was very obscure. Ahh many late late nights and memories =) I feel the ultima series was all very good up to about Ultima 7 .. then Lord british should have retired =P

Only one I've fully played is Chrono Trigger; aside from that, I got the re-release copy of Planescape: Torment, fixed it up for the modern day, and played a bit. I love how you can avoid combat a LOT if you just talk to people, although many conventions of the day are showing some age (mainly UI issues). Still really cool and once I have some time (i.e. after Mass Effect 2 and BioShock 2) I will try to sit down and play it some more.

..My dwarves got locked in a room with a cupboard filled with food and starved to death.
Don't worry, my first attempt at irrigation involved flooding my carefully build fortress by diverting a river through it.

Anygame with the motto "losing is fun" is going to be great!!
