Assassins Creed is assassination gameplay. I would not call it a stealthgame, since most of the fun is running from guards and dissapearing. Although this is very, very fun.

Shadows I say. Shadows is stealth.
It's stealth in the sense that when you're playing it "right" (the more boring, but more historically accurate way), you're invisible not by staying in shadow, but by "hiding in plain sight". You become one among the crowd, and even if you're spotted, you become anonymous again by mixing in with scholars or sitting in a bench looking innocent.

You did not mention platformer, which would belong almost exclusively to the Sly Cooper series. If you have ever played it, you might agree with my point here. It's stealth gameplay is quite fun as well. This slightly offends me because this game is the pinnacle of stealth platformers, and I do not want to see it left out.
I knew I was forgetting something, thanks. Now it's up there in case you haven't voted already.

Becoming the enemy. Hitman is my favorite stealth game, but ironically Prototype has this kind of stealth, but a bit more... literally.
The best part about absorbing someone, and what I absolutely makes me laugh most about it is how you can point at someone and say "That's him! That's him! I found him! Shoot!" and the poor guy goes "No wait! You've got the wrong guy!"

Hitman gets my vote, but it was a tough choice between that and Thief, but then I remembered how many times I played "Death of a Showman" and "House of Cards". Ahhh, good times :).

Thief style. I like for my enemies to not even know that I've been there, or that I'm robbing them blind :).

I would say a mixture of assasins creed and splinter cell. But then again disguise is always a load of fun, nothing makes me laugh more than playing as a spy in TF2 an walking around the enemies base dressed as thier Sniper. Actully when I think about it the spy from tf2 is probably the greatest stealth character ever, as he can kinda do all of the above...with style ¬¬

Historically speaking, the assasins were religious fanatics high on hashish, which made them essentially dareless. The danger was that they could come up and slit your throat without hesitating... In the middle of a crowd... Yeah you're probably right.

Whatever happened to Sly Cooper anyway??

I'd say Hitman. Every game in the series was amazing.

I quite liked the stealth play in Oblivion. I've played Assassin's Creed, Hitman, and Metal Gear Solid and liked all of them, but I like Oblivion best. Would it be safe to assume that Oblivion's stealth falls neatly in the RPG catagory, or is it considered more Action-Stealth?

I prefer Splinter Cell but Hitman was always hysterical especially taking victim's clothing. That became my MO leaving naked victims everywhere I went.

Where is the "one I don't have to play option"? Unless of course the Mug/Steal option in a TBRPG counts then I'll take that one.

I love Splinter Cell (Original and Chaos Theory), the Sly Cooper series and Metal Gear (My favorite being Snake Eater). Assassins' Creed is also pretty good.
