As per the title, when do you think you are justified in hitting or physically assaulting someone else?

Never, or perhaps only in self defense? What about if someone is constantly verbally abused or bullied, do they have a right to hit back?

edit: before any grammar nazis, I meant "their" in the poll

When she hasn't made me a sammich yet :p

Seriously though, for me there has to be an immediate threat to myself or my family / close friends with no alternative other than a fight, talking it out isn't working, before I think it's appropriate to resort to violence.

Ahem... when a person of reasonable firmness fears for their safety or safety of another, due to another person using threatening behaviour. I chose other because in the UK you can use self defence in a way that you can perform a pre-emptive strike if you have reasonable grounds on doing so (e.g someone walking up to you, swearing at you, chest puffed out with fists clenched)

Also anyone who uses YOLO seriously. YOU SHALL FEAR MY WRATH OF MY BACKHAND.

what about someone who is verbally bullied? We always tell people to stand up for themselves, isnt giving a bully a black eye a good way to cut him down to size?

You can always ground up some almonds and put it in their lunch and tell them it's cyanide.

You don't need a reason to hit someone, you just need to be able to go through with it and its consequences. That's my two cents.

For me, in self-defence for an attack. I can't see or think of a reason to ever attack someone otherwise.

If someone hits me, I'll hit them. Other than that, it takes a lot to actually provoke a physical attack from me. I tend to go verbal to begin with. Wouldn't just go around smacking people one whenever I felt like it though, no matter how much I wanted to.

I voted for self-defense, but if someone is verbally threatening and persists after being told to back off, I would say it's justified to attack pre-emptively if they are a threat.

For the most part self defense applies to myself unless someone did something really outlandish like shitting on a family member's grave just after they'd been buried because then yeah I might just deck em.

Eh, I suppose you could make a case for self-defense, although even if someone is attacking you you're probably better off defending/fleeing than wading in. If you land a lucky punch and cripple/kill someone the courts aren't going to care who started it. It's still manslaughter.

I will give the utilitarian answer and say that violence is justified when it is necessary to prevent or stop harm from coming to youself or others.

Self defence is the most obvious example, but another could be the assassination of, say, a Mexican crime boss that can't really be touched by legal means in order to prevent him from exploiting and killing more people.

Self defense or defense of another.
I'm not huge on hitting, so I'll avoid it if possible.

Is it ? I thought that it still counts as self defense . Especially in the case of a lucky punch , unless you continue to punch them . Hopefully with witnessess to say you were defending yourself.

OT: Now matter how much i WANT to , i will not hit a person unless they hit me first , but once they first punch is thrown, call me the HULK . If ever i get slapped , call me the Punisher . Seriously , i hate getting slapped, not only will i physically hurt someone that slaps me , i will embarass the fuck out of the during the whole thing .

Depends, if its simple assault, then probably. Though its still up to the jury to decide. However if you know the person is trying to rob/kill/sodomize you, than it may be considered justifiable homicide.

Anyways, I strike whoever I please, without reason! Unless of course its my mother, aunts or uncles. The Portuguese are very unforgiving when it comes to that.
