hunting is acceptable once you can watch War of the Worlds and say "yeah, what those aliens are doing is fair", because that's what we do to animals, every day, and it makes me sick. i think people who huny solely for sport are the worst kind of scum, they think an animal should die just for some brief entertainment

(in case you can't tell, i'm a vegetarian)
Hmmm a little condemning aren't we? (No I don't support killing animals for fun) No the worst kind of scum is the people who hunt other people for sport or mass murderers.. you get the idea.

I suggest reading The Most Dangerous Game if you want a good look at the ferocity of man

Now Gentlemen...It is time for the Hunt!! Release the Hounds!!

Hunting is necessary for animal population control, and reduces the chance that animals will starve. HOWEVER...I believe that if you shoot it, you eat it. Anyone who shoots things and then leaves them in the woods to rot has no respect of mine.

Do you have an invisibility cloak and kick ass weapons?.....I think the answer is pretty obvious here

Predator > Humans.... Seriously it took 8 of them to kill just 3 in the new one

That's a serious disadvantage XD
well, of course here we must define "better", he could definately kick my ass but i bet "so i was underground skewering these explorers this time and..." isn't a very good opener for picking up girls

Ah Touche!

Yup, I totally support people hunting animals. Seems fine, seeing as animals hunt each other all the time and its perfectly natural.
The thing that throws off this equation is the unnatural use of firearms, which quickly removes any sense of fairness or sport from the equation.
If you want to hunt I totally support you, but first I'm going to strip you down, take your gun, hand you a switchblade, and then point you towards the nearest bear. Best of luck macho man.
Why does it need to be natural? Anyway isn't it sorta natural. Because animals invented it? Rait?

o'contrare, i'd happily die knowing that my life wasn't a burden to anyone else, as opposed to dying knowing that, if there is a hell, i've got some SERIOUS explaining to do

Yes, I think that the perspective from which the OP is written illustrates an incomplete understanding of hunting which indicates that the Oposter has likely not been very immersed in that culture.

Hunting is done for more than just food or its fun to kill shit with guns. Growing up as a teen, It was a yearly responsibility to thin out the local squirrel population in the fall. This was done for several reasons. First and foremost, If left unchecked it would be impossible to grow a garden the following year. Living in a place where a garden constitutes roughly 1/4th of household productivity the loss of that would be catastrophic for the family. Secondly what was killed was used. The meat was either cooked for gravy, or the lesser cuts of meat was fed to farm animals. Occasionally the furs were also used for various things.

Also, you have to realize ANY species, whos growth is left unchecked leads to an unhealthy population that has a tendency to generate disease, which can be devastating to not just that specific animals population but the entire local ecosystem.

Dont get me wrong. I absolutely love animals. However I am realistic enough to realize that part of our responsibility as the dominant species on the planet is acting as stewards of the planet, and as such it falls to us to make logical and realistic decisions that protect the overall environment. Some times that does come with the unfortunate task of culling.

Hunting is a primal part of our existence, and it is still a relevant part of it as well.
If I had thought of these earlier I would have added them to the poll.

When its to control the population?
im gonna stop you there, as the most populated animal species on the planet, no human has any right to excecute another animal for over population. if we had any sense of justice, we'd all take shotguns into the local town with us and just go trigger crazy for ten minutes before picking up the milk
Not even Roaches?.....Those little Bastards can't hide behind PeTA forever

well, I put down 'only for food' however my opinion on the subject also has one extra point to it, lets say you owned a very large zoo where there is interspecies interactions, for example Zebra's and Antelopes, now both breeds are quite rare, however due to an unknown reason the zebras were breeding at an unpredictable rate, and through various calculations if this breeding continues then the food supply for the Antelopes would diminish and unfortunately they might die out, so the solve the situation for rather letting one breed die out, hunting the zebras is acceptable to lower the concentration of them, but yet I still only feel that this should be acceptable if the corpse was used for food for the other animals or research

It is always acceptable to hunt introduced animals that destroy the environment, as well as for food (pretty sure that it's a legal requirement you have to kill any rabbit of fox caught in Australia).

You think humans are the most populated animal on the planet?

My problem with hunting for sport is that it invariably will get more elaborate and with hunting that goes hand in had with cruelty.

A chicken farmer Hunting foxes that can decimate his lively hood? not an issue.

Some smug arse on a horse with a dozen other equally smug tossers and 2 dozen hounds? that's cruelty for the sake of it.

Hunting for food or population/pest control is fine, even if most of the people are just doing it for the fun if it, it still serves a purpose. Any thing else is unacceptable.

Hunting is only acceptable when done for food, whilst naked and armed only with a knife, spears may be considered depending on naked attractiveness. Thats how manly men do it, manly women too.
No no no, real men only use their own bodies as weapons. Now go wrestle a bear!

Hahahah Indeed, I hear hell doesn't have a very good union...Damnit!!

But you are right seeing as how I'd rather die like a dog with some dignity rather than just being left alive....

Btw that is a Kickass Avatar XD

Always, until it depletes the natural balance of things.

Humans are predators and without predators the ecosystem is thrown off.
True, but making a successful kill nowadays is easier than it used to be. It used to be that a whole group of us armed with primitive weapons had to band together to take down one animal, depending how big or dangerous it was, and this was such a difficult and risky task that we were happy to get red meat once a month.
Now, with a gun and good aim, we can kill pretty much anything that doesn't have a bulletproof skull. Humans are becoming too proficient as predators; this isn't even counting indirect killing via depletion of habitat.
I don't mind hunting so long as you make full use of the body (by which I mean eat it) and therefore don't waste the animal's death, and so long as it is strictly controlled to avoid overhunting. Anything else I cannot condone.

I clicked for sport, just to be pedantic.
Hmmm how pedantic of you.
(no I have no idea what that means)
I actually looked it up on The Free Dictionary and here is it's definition of pedantic:

pe·danti·cal·ly adv.

Synonyms: pedantic, academic, bookish, donnish, scholastic

These adjectives mean marked by a narrow, often tiresome focus on or display of learning and especially its trivial aspects: a pedantic writing style; an academic insistence on precision; a bookish vocabulary; donnish refinement of speech; scholastic and excessively subtle reasoning.

Hunting isn't the most popular pastime in this day and age but I think a lot of people still do it. Some people seem to condone hunting for food while others don't condone it in any case. So what do you think? When (if ever) do you consider hunting acceptable?

EDIT: Just to clarify I only placed the option to choose hunting only for sport in the name of fairplay. I'm honestly not expecting many people to vote for hunting only for sport.
Hunting is necessary to control overpopulation.
