Hunting isn't the most popular pastime in this day and age but I think a lot of people still do it. Some people seem to condone hunting for food while others don't condone it in any case. So what do you think? When (if ever) do you consider hunting acceptable?

EDIT: Just to clarify I only placed the option to choose hunting only for sport in the name of fairplay. I'm honestly not expecting many people to vote for hunting only for sport.
What about a option like "Only if the animal attacks first?"
Like if your just walking around in the woods with a permit for a stag and a rifle when suddenly a cougar comes out of nowhere and you shoot it. You know? like under certain circumstances.
You should probably mark that as other. I would have added it at the start buut it's a little late now.

I'd have to say always, as long as it's done in moderation. SOMETHING has to control populations.
Yeah, the natural predators do. Nature doesn't need us, you know.
You can say that, but I grew up in a town where it was entirely commonplace to see a deer in your backyard.
OH THE HORRORS!!!!! i think i feel a horror movie coming on! *woman screaming* *dramatic zoom on a deer*

I voted when it's done for Food. However, most people I know who do it do it for sport...and food (or pelt).

My brother-in-law use to shoot Coyotes when he lived out in Utah, apparently they're pests out there, and he kept every pelt from the animals he killed. I was amazed at how warm them keep you. So, while I kind of think that hunting nowadays is kind of silly (unless you live in a rural area) I have been impressed with the quality of the meat/fur from the animals people have hunted.

I'd probably do it if I could bow hunt, hunting with a rifle and scope, and hide, and salt licks, and beer just seems like cheating to me.

That;s not hunting. If you mean killing animals you don't have tags for, that's a different issue, poaching, not hunting. but killing an animal that attacks you isn't hunting.
No i mean if its against your survival.
Either it or you.
Than that's not hunting, which means you don't believe it's ever right.
God! No thats not what i mean.
I said what i meant in my first post.
Your hunting a stag but instead you end up with a cougar because it would have killed you instead.
It's not poaching if you didn't have intentions to kill it but it would killed you.
please don't make me repeat myself.
How bout we just end this right now and forget about the whole thing?
In that situation, you are hunting the stag, so killing the cougar isn't hunting, it's just self-defense. The question asked was: when is it acceptable to hunt? so, is it right for a man with a rifle out hunting stag, to then killing a stag? That is the question, if it is only acceptable to hunt to preserve your own life, explain to me a modern situation where your life depends on grabbing a rifle and going out into the woods adn then killing a "defenseless" deer.

Simply put, Never.

Hunting is a stupid waste of time as it's a brutally unfair sport that relies on sadism. It's Ganking at it's base form.

You want dead foxes? Trap for them.
You want food? Trap for it.
You want sport? Play against something that can fight back.
You want to hunt? You're a c*nt.

And I'm not sorry about offending anyone with that. If you're going out to prove your superiority over an animal, you need to take a good long look at why you are.

What's wrong with hunting?
It's not like animals are reluctant to kill other species, so why should we be?
Don't try to turn this on me by saying something like: "We are the more evolved species, we should not lower ourselves to their level."
That's grade A elitism right there.
So... you believe yourself to be no better than an animal.
You believe hunting animals is not wrong.
Do you see my point as well as I see you through this scope? :D

OT: When done for food, sure. Otherwise, not a fan of it really.

Hunting is fine, as long as you're not fucking up protected wildlife reserves (important) and preferably if you eat what you kill, such that you're honoring the full ritual (semi-important).

I don't want to kill unoffensive animals just doing their thing, myself, but I don't begrudge people their hobby - it's a pretty storied human activity.
