I put for sport because afaik, regulated hunting game is fairly well bred (they aren't going to become extinct at any rate). For food I guess is okay, but I wouldn't necessarily choose it unless there were no alternatives. Recreationally, I personally think you should give the animal a fair chance: don't use guns to kill it and don't use trucks to chase it. Get back to nature; use a bow and arrow, ride a horse :D

I was a hunter myself until not so long ago; so for me hunting has always acceptable. And I did it for a few of different reasons.

1. Mainly, yes, it was for food. Its very economical.

2. More importantly it was for controlling the population of certain animals (95% of the time it was rabbits)Some people might say that you should let nature take care of itself, which is fair enough.
But there was on particular occasion, which now thinking back was why I started hunting more; a neighbour of mine kept horses and because the rabbit infestation had got so bad that one of the horses had tripped on a rabbit hole fallen and broken one of its legs.If a horse brakes a leg, there's nothing you can do. Unfortunately, there was no choice but to put the horse down. (After that I started helping out more with controlling the population.)

And 3. I have to admit it, I did love it as a sport. I had been doing it since i was 7 and I used to be a champion in clay pigeon shooting too.

It's hard not to enjoy something that you're good at.

Yeah, the natural predators do. Nature doesn't need us, you know.

Hunting is important to keep animal populations in control, where was that option in the poll?

Where I live we need hunters. I remember that 15 or years ago we "as in the area" restricted the hunt for deer. Couple years later they were way over populated and they started dieing out from starvation and disease.
.
To quote South Park, "We need to kill them, or else they'll die". XD
I know its extremely ironic, but its the truth. Overpopulation does a fuck load to the environment, and we are taking away it's balancing act (So to speak).

Hunting isn't the most popular pastime in this day and age but I think a lot of people still do it. Some people seem to condone hunting for food while others don't condone it in any case. So what do you think? When (if ever) do you consider hunting acceptable?

EDIT: Just to clarify I only placed the option to choose hunting only for sport in the name of fairplay. I'm honestly not expecting many people to vote for hunting only for sport.
What about a option like "Only if the animal attacks first?"
Like if your just walking around in the woods with a permit for a stag and a rifle when suddenly a cougar comes out of nowhere and you shoot it. You know? like under certain circumstances.
That;s not hunting. If you mean killing animals you don't have tags for, that's a different issue, poaching, not hunting. but killing an animal that attacks you isn't hunting.
No i mean if its against your survival.
Either it or you.
Than that's not hunting, which means you don't believe it's ever right.

I believe that most hunting now days, unless for survival (which when necessary is necessary), should be, and is, done for population control. We've eliminated a large number of natural predators in many areas, under the name of self preservation, which is a chance many species see as an opportunity to reproduce in larger numbers than before (or, at least experience a better than natural survival rate). And since we eliminated the predators, we should take that duty, until there is a suitable alternative for population control.

I live by the rules that my forest dwelling family set:
Hunting is acceptable when:
A) I'm hungry
-and/or-
B) I'm drunk

When you're hunting for food.

Blood sports are unnecessary; I'd be pissed if someone tried to get me to play football without me realising, moreso if they picked up a shotgun and blew my fucking arse off for the thrill of it.

Agreed 100%.

I've been hunting a few times (didn't shoot anything myself though) and my parents still go hunting because elk meat is just that tasty. :3 It's probably one of my dad's favourite past times and by hunting elks means we also take care of over population.

Well, I personally wouldn't do it, but what people want to do with their time isn't really my problem.

Unless they're just going to hang up the heads on their walls. That shit's just creepy.

Hunting's fine if it's a necessity, but it's sure as hell not a sport.

A sport is when both sides know they're playing.

What's wrong with hunting?
It's not like animals are reluctant to kill other species, so why should we be?
Don't try to turn this on me by saying something like: "We are the more evolved species, we should not lower ourselves to their level."
That's grade A elitism right there.
My point exactly. If a lion or dolphin can do it, why not we? Sure it'd be a damn waste to hunt other animals to extinction, so I don't support that, but go right ahead to hunt some if you like. As long as you don't overdo it of course, the next generation of hunters and people in general like to have some too.

I don't really get trophy hunting though, it's not like most of it can really earn you bragging rights in this day and age.

They do. Every animal knows it can be killed at any given moment, that's what survival instincts are for. Most animals have other predators than just humans, don't forget that either.

If we were all faced with an extinction crisis you can bet your ass we'd all be hunting without a second's thought.

I think hunting should be done for food. If the animal is endangered, then only when the hunter is unable to buy/ get food.

i also happen to beleave in fair play while hunting such as giveing an animal a chance.
here's a thought, how about giving it a chance by NOT KILLING IT??
So it can starve to death in what 2 more months? its better for them to die and be used then for them to die and be wasted. If your too stubern to understand that you need help.

are you saying you're better than predator?
Any counter arguement is instantly invalid. Im not sure i could deal with it if it wasnt a clean kill, i mean watching something squirming in agony and voiding its bowels all over the place cannot be a fun experience for anyone.

As long as it isn't wasteful I have no problem with it. If your choice is to go buy meat or kill it yourself, I don't see any difference between them ethically. It's still an animal dead so that a person can eat. Such is life.

I get both sides of the argument, I really do, but in the end humans are hunters. Always have been. Perhaps someday we won't be, but that day isn't today.

If you're gonna be against hunting though, you damn well better be a vegetarian. Otherwise you're the worst sort of hypocrite. I have no respect for people that think killing is only okay as long as someone else does it.

I also don't much like killing purely for sport. I get the thrill of hunting, I really do. It's built into us at a very basic level, but I think there's something very wrong with a person who would kill anything just for fun and not get any use out of it. Killing for practical necessity is just part of life. Doing things in inefficient ways because it's more fun that way is what makes life worth living. Killing with no purpose speaks of seriously unhealthy desires though. I'm just likely to be a bit wary around anyone who would do that.
