When I hunt, I use all of the animal. I also train others to hunt. I only use a knife. It's quite fun.

It's acceptable as long as the game population is large enough to support it. Where I live there is currently an overpopulation of deer, so the government is actually encouraging hunters to go out and hunt.

My view is don't waste what you take. If you kill a deer use it or give it to someone who will. I think people are slightly crazy when they consider killing fun, and people consider me strange when a pheasant flies into a window and dies and my first words were "Can we eat it?"

Yes that actually happened, and my mom didn't want me to make a mess attempting to de-feather and clean it so I was sadly disappointed. My cats got a treat though.

I'm fine with it if you're hunting for food and the things you can use the animal's other parts for. That's why they're on the planet in the first fucking place.

I know this probably seems redundant, but just don't kill anything that's in short supply.

I would say it is acceptable when done for food, but that is a bit backwards.
If you are out in the wilderness and hungry enough to kill, you are probably not in the best condition to actually track something down and do so...
I think it means if you use meat from hunting as a food source rather than buying meat from cows that never left their pen

everyone: Read the Omnivores Dilemma, its a great book that puts things in perspective as far as slaughter houses and such.

I dont hunt, but I wish I did

and of course the human hunt is always acceptable

I believe hunting is fine when dealing with out of control pests like rabbits, foxes and Kangaroos in Australia.

I'll often go hunting with my brother and stepdad for rabbits these days and I'll usually end up with a few good kills. Naturally, we'll take them home and cook them up, but when we go hunting for foxes we'll leave one out and camp out until dusk.

Hunting isn't the most popular pastime in this day and age but I think a lot of people still do it. Some people seem to condone hunting for food while others don't condone it in any case. So what do you think? When (if ever) do you consider hunting acceptable?

EDIT: Just to clarify I only placed the option to choose hunting only for sport in the name of fairplay. I'm honestly not expecting many people to vote for hunting only for sport.
Man you have to see where I come from. You THINK a lot of people still do it? Its like a religion where I come from. (Note: I hate it.)

But yeah its still pretty popular man. But I only condone it for food and minor population control.

I think it's fine in any circumstance, unless it might do damage to the future of the species.

I say it's acceptable when it's done for food. Hunting animals just to mount their stuffed heads on the wall does not sit right with me.

Whenever sarah palin says it is, apparently
seriously, to keep down populations of a species, but only if they will have a negetive efect on the environment. This involves research, not just going out and saying so.

It's ok when you do it in a game, for food or something like that.

I play Seal Hunter a lot so I've killed over 200 000 animals in that game xD.

anytime the animal isn't endangered, and as long as said act of hunting will not push them into the endangered classification (IE, more hunting then there is now)

I have NO problem with people hunting as long as their hunting deer or other animals that are not endangered.

I don't do it myself, but more hunting = more meat, more meat = higher supply, higher supply = cheaper meat, cheaper meat = I get to each for cheaper.

Sure, that isn't really the way it works, but in my logical head, the people eating that deer don't need to buy that beef that's in the store.

There are PLENTY of Deer, and around here, where they are in actual towns and cities with real roads, you're doing everyone a favor by not letting them get too numerous.

the vast majority of mounted heads and horns is the result of an animal that was killed and then eaten. I highly doubt many hunters (legitimate hunters, not poachers, which is completely different), would kill an animal, take its head to mount and leave the carcass in the woods.

And really, even IF they did that, if it's not an endangered species, I see no problem with that. Nothing goes to "waste" in nature, and animals die all the time and feed all the other animals lower on the food chain. It's FOOLISH perhaps, that a human could potentially fill its belly with that meat, but I don't have a problem with people doing it per se.

When done for food or keeping the animal population in order. Environment has its limits and isn't always able to support growin populations.
