Here's the thing.

Around Christmas, into January there are often user explosions as people get time off from whatever and start getting bored to hunt around the net. It happened last Christmas, for example. The year before not so much but the site as a whole was much smaller then so the increase was more gradual over 2008 though it sped up towards the end.

We were all new once and any fresh crop of people brings both good and bad with it. We'll see what happens though I fully expect a number of users to start decrying that the site is going down the toilet, again.

(Looks at join date) phew! I managed to avoid being in that Christmas rush! Only just though...

To be honest I don't mind if there's heaps of new users, they often bring a lot to the site, and some of them will go on to make good threads and become core members of the community. It might mean a small adjustment period whilst they get used to what they can and can't do around here, but overall it's for the best. More users equals more advertising dollars which equals a better Escapist, so maybe look at it that way.

Starting from when do you consider someone a newbie?
1-100 post.
...Really? You base "newbness" on post count? Thats a terrible way to go about it.
I kinda do too. Not for other people, but for myself. I always held back on my full opinion until I had a few hundred posts under my belt, just in case I made a bad name for myself.

We were all newbies once, if they act like trolls, then they will be dealt with like trolls.

Until they do something stupid, consider them one of us and embrace them.

But I swear to god, if they make MW2 threads I'm going to kill them. Kill them all.

Here's my list of people who MUST help.

Furburt
Shewolf
Max The reaper.
Idealist commy
Neonbob
simulord
Eatmorebabies
the Soviet connection
And Wicky 42.

We will SQUASH the newbies, if they break the rules and make non stop repeat threads! :<

To arms my bretheren! :D
Stupidity is bad? Oh fuck, I've been posting stupid things in this forum! OH SHI-*Banhammer crushes me*

I've been coming to the Escapist for nearly 2 years now. But I never bothered signing up because I don't like signing up, anywhere.

As to your question, the more members a community has, the more rich it becomes. So it's a good thing.

I've been watching ZP and Unskippable for quite a while but never really bothered signing up.
Decided to join when I heard LRR is moving here, but still tend not to post much, especially since for the past few weeks all I?ve seen is threads on 'No Russian'

I think it would be fine if there was some way to make it mandatory they have posted a certain amount before they make a thread. There's been considerably more discussionless or poorly thought out threads recently. I'm talking since October-ish. And a hell of a lot more on ZP. Has Yahtzee hit a new level of popularity since he did MW2 and is now attracting a lot of new people or something?

I don't know how we class Newbies here, in all honesty I still think I'm a Newbie yet I've been here since March. In my eye's your a Newb until you hit your first year on the escapist.

umm sorry to ask,

but are we seriously discussing whever new members are a good thing here, because well doesnt that just defy the point of a internet forum if no new members are allowed to join.

But hell i may be biased since i am a relatively new member. (well post count wise)

It's something I've only noticed about gaming culture since coming here - new people are somehow bad. I still don't know why. I guess it'd dilute the gene pool or something?

Yeah, we were all new once, and without new people this site dies. Anyone who thinks new people are bad is a moron of the highest order.
