Newbies are fine as long as they aren't Yahtzee fanboys who don't get put on probation within 15 posts.

For the most part, I think it be a bad thing.

MOST of the newbies are just awful, but the ones that can behave themselves and not be a complete moron, I have no problem with.

Yes, I am a bit of an Elitist.
SUE ME.
I agree with most of what you said, but...

Ok. I'll sue you. You'll be hearing from my lawyer in a few days time.

I should warn you, he's good at his job.

Remember: we've all got to start somewhere.
Basing the 'noob level' of a member should be done on the date they signed up, not their post count. I've been here just over a year, but there are some who have doubled my post count in only two months... just saying.

New members keep things... well, new. Without them, a site stagnates.
As long as they keep within the rules, I say 'Welcome to the Escapist!'

I've been here for a while. However, as of recently, I got this random feeling of wanting to join discussions and thus finally registered.

I see what you are talking about. All I can say is that it can't be bad, we were all new at one point. I haven't been here that long, but look at me now: I've already angered about 1/10th the amount of people Hitler has offended, and I have a fairly good collection of posts. And I am typing five minutes after midnight...I have no life...but at least some of the newer people can get just as absorbed as we are to this forum and make us look a little more normal.
I'll never understand how people are able to post so much...You've been here for 2 months and you already have 1/4th of my posts.
Someone's only been here for 3-4 months and has 4500-5000 Posts already. I'm only just tipping onto 400. |:

EDIT:Speak of the devil (Above Post)
Eh, don't worry about Sasquatch, he won't bite. Your post count seems similar to mine for the amount of time. Mine may have been higher, since I really posted alot in my first few months, now I just have trouble finding topics that interest me.

Agreed. I personally base it on post count and date of joining combined. To me, someone's new if they have very few posts and they've only been here perhaps a couple of months tops. If they post a lot in a short space of time (without spamming, see Max and Neonbob for examples of the right way) then I consider them established community members, same if they've been here for a long time and only have a few posts to their name. You need to work with all the bases, I guess.

And on topic, I think new blood is okay if people don't start breaking rules and posting inane threads and posts. If people stick to the rules and contribute well to the forums then I don't see any roblem with a load of newbies. And welcome one and all, to those newbies :D.
On the note of post count and join date, I lurked for much of the first few months I was here. I think it's a good move to do actually because it was spent reading the forums and getting a feel for them. Even after that time I didn't really start posting until about May/June 2008, part of why many of the older users consider me a part of the generation starting around then with the Cockney thread and such.

Post count doesn't mean inexperience. If someone has a spread-out backlog I think it means that they chose their words carefully and are more likely to post highly thought-out responses than people who have 1000 posts in the first month.

What it comes down to is the individuals. Maturity is irrespective of experience. People also pick up on the undercurrents of a forum faster if they're more mature, or so I've found anyway. In short I think we should scrap the idea of tarring users with any brush before we've got as much of a feel for them as they develop for the community, or until they make utter dicks of themselves in which case we mods step in. Somehow, this isn't exclusive to new users. I can't imagine why.

On the topic of elitism in forums I find that a lot of the dark-grey objectionable material here is not directly offensive so much as it is generally unfriendly which makes the feel of the site far less welcoming to new people. Better to take a relaxed approach and guide with suggestion and recommendation than slam everyone down with "You're fucking up the site!" bullshit and obnoxiousness. That just makes potentially good users less likely to take that additional step and can turn away many others who would contribute to the site. A similar thing has happened to the more experienced users who got sick of the site and left.

Moral of the story: What poisons a community is never new people, it's dickheads. Change is not cancer. The guidelines are your friend and sing happy songs around the campfire more often.
Quoted for Truth. It can't be stressed enough that its mostly the snarkiness/elitist tones that send chills up and down both new members, and older members alike. So, while a topic like this may seem harmless, I can't really shrug off the feeling that its made to point out that "new people are bad" due to the language of the title. Just because the poll has given options for feelings, it doesn't change the fact that the Opening Post is in a way...demeaning.

P.S. I still haven't gotten the hang of the quote system when it comes to quoting multiple people from other pages in a topic, without making double posts. Am I a newbie? =P

Hilarious how you forgot to enlist the help of our very own Spanish Inquisition.
No, because if I do that people may catch on and use it more often...

Nay, this must be done with brute froce, something not easily replicated, and no where near as sneaky...

'sides it's not like they'd catch on and actually do the Spanish Inquisition... that's just prepostrous...
Not prepostrous, just unexpected (sorry, had to be done)

More newbies = more variety = good thing (as long as it's not just more variety of names for what's basically the same MW2 thread :) )

I think Zero punctuation (even though I love it) draws allot of 1 post idiots who only post 'first' and when they do post something constructive 'its lyk dis'

I don't want the escapist drowned by mediocrity.

And no, we're not, not really. There's been one continuous surge of members since around Yahtzee's 3th or 4th video.

Besides: the more the merrier, especially since it helps keep the site going, and could potentially get us new stuff in the longer term.
