I didn't like the game because of it's generic environments and shallow storyline. I think it's because i was expecting it to be like BioShock or Half-Life and was let down. It wasn't a terrible game, it just wasn't good.
Shallow storyline are you kidding me the story line is so deep it should be considered an ocean.
Aliens bad, human soldiers good. Go shoot aliens, they do bad stuff.
Wow, that's so deep. I should put on waders.
As i've just commented someone else you are doing exactly what they did playing the game through not listening to the characters moaning about it being mediocore and then moving on, almost all of the named characters in the game have an entire life that bungie has created for them, and although it isn't portrayed well in the game itself bungie have never normally been good at showing heir story through games, the 3? novels that have been produced are good reads and help to explain the story deeper
You could make a book about pretty much anything, the mere fact that the game has a book about it is no proof. Besides, every character that i've ever seen has had a backstory, it's just a matter of how well characterized they are. Halo characters are relatively shallow and bland when compared to characters from other games (i.e BioShock, Half-Life 2, Mass Effect, ect.) and their backstory doesn't really play into the story at all in Halo.
So masterchiefs character is bland compared to Jack Ryans in Bioshock, how so would that be?
Jack Ryan is a person that has human relationships with people while Master Chief is a walking cliché with as much personality as a paperweight.
I respectfully disagree, Masterchief throughout the series shows some personality. For intance it's clear he shows concern for his fellow soldiers, often checking on them to see if they are safe and comforting a troubled marine. He also shows respect for his commanders while remaining somewhat neutral about them. The only person he really talks to is Cortana and when he talks to her he's like a normal person talking to another person... sharing quips. He has a sense of humour as well, what with his tendancy to crack jokes and most importantly he is set on track with a clear defined purpose.
He isn't meant to be as much a character as he is a symbol though.

"I don't like Halo because it is not realistic. Now excuse me while I shoot Zombie Nazis in CoD."

I for one find Halo awesome. It's a great FPS, and the only reason people find it stale and plain is because more than half the shooters on the market are trying to be like Halo. While forge mode would be a hell of a lot easier on the PC, it is still very, VERY fun and addicting. To me, Halo is one of the best multiplayer FPSs on the market. CoD is the series that is stale. They basically make the same game every year. If they got any lazier, they would just change the number on the cover of the game and use the game from last year. And GoW2 is basically about two roided up stereotypical macho men chainsawing aliens. How much do you have to make your main characters compensate for?

I will say this, if you think Halo is a bad game and did nothing for the industry, you are probably an idiot. It was great game in my eyes, hell, one of the best games every if you ask me, but I don't care if you like it or not as long as you recognize what it did.

I think the first one is a great console FPS, and I enjoy playing the third one from time to time, but I think people give it a lot more credit than it deserves.

EDIT: BTW this type of thread has been done to death.

He does display some emotion on occasion, but i found that when that happens it comes off as more of a product of the uncanny valley then it does that of genuine human emotion. I do agree with you that he's more of a symbol then a character, and it's true that (next to Duke Nukem) he's become a universal symbol of badass, but on my priority chart of game characters i put having a deep and interesting mind over being an icon.

I know halo isn't very well liked around here, but i for one like halo. Is Halo the best game ever? certainly not, but it was a good game with a solid multiplayer. I'm generally an avid PC gamer (i refuse to you the phrase "hardcore") I still just don't get why people hate it so much.

So do you like or dislike halo? please state why.
It's not that it's bad, it's simply way overrated. It's an OK multiplayer experience with a disastrous campaign. Of course, as any game, playing with friends is a blast, specially since the community are a bunch of twitchy 14-year old cunts.

Its the game that set the bar for FPS's it did everything good that other fps's did bad. Its unlike anything else that was ever on the market It made the orginional xbox without it we wound't have any xbox games like KOTAR and fable. we wound't have xbox 360 either
I can't begin to describe how wrong you are.
1) It didn't set the bar for FPS. It was the first playable CONSOLE FPS, and the control scheme was very very good, which was very rare at the time on console FPS's.
2) There were better games at the time on the market. Much better games, accross all available consoles.
3) The existence of KOTOR and Fable is attributed to Halo? I laugh. A deep, involving RPG that also came out for the PC, made by a completely different company wouldn't have existed hadn't it been for a generic, twitch-heavy console FPS? I laugh again.

I voted "wegwepaihtpehfilie!!!!!!", because I assume that means, "I've played it and it's reasonably good as far as shooters go, but it does nothing revolutionary for the genre nor does it know when to stop pumping out sequel babies."

As a twitchy 14 year old ****, I resent that statement.

Halo got too popular, so now apparently it's trendy to hate it because it's popular....

The halo trilogy isn't that bad. It isn't a solid 10/10 that people claim it is, but it can be fun. You just can't take it seriously compared to other FPS games such as COD4 in terms of online play.

On a side note, I'd like to have someone show me where Quake 4 was considered "good" or "not trash". Or how Oblivion is barely considered a RPG. I guess it was supposed to be a sports game?

It's OK. Haven't played much of 3, though, and all my friends eventually grew tired of it and stopped playing it entirely. I've experienced hours of fun playing Halo 2 with my friends.

Halo is almost the definition of FPS: Guy, usually in a space suit, shooting things , most likely aliens, due to non-specific war.

The reason why halo is so disliked is because of 3 things:
The horrible shininess of doom and misery.
It is god awful repetitive.
And people are complete deuchebags.

The reason why is because people like variation, and the dirt specter... which i kinda find hard to believe because you fight the same damn monsters in half life (murder the garden gnomes) and gears of war (testosterone hyped retards) and the only difference between those games and halo as I can see is that gears of war is "BRUTAL" and half life has the scientific aspect.... like press button to open door is switched out with if you lay enough weight on that side of the swing the door will open after you killed all those head crabs.

Also as a side note: Halo is fucking awesome, its has good graphics, weapons, story, etc and those who does not like halo because of retarded reasons can go bum **** their PS3, Wii, computer and/or Xbox 360.

Remove the word "not", and I'll agree with every word of this.

I suspect that the vast majority of Halo "hate" comes from:
-Sony fanboys
-Nintendo fanboys
-PC elitists who don't realize that there is in fact a PC version of Halo.
-Story snobs
-And people who have only played Halo 3.

The big reason I didnt like halo was because it was overrated, people just went crazy over another space themed FPS and I honestly didn't understand it.

I'm not saying it's a bad game but it only deserves about half, probably less, of the credit it gets.

Another guy in a space suit killing aliens? LOL BUNGEE R GENYUSES

This, my friend, is why you are only a paperboy. No, it couldn't get any less emasculating.

-Sony fanboys - Halo is a family of fanboyism itself, so of course they shall war.
-Nintendo fanboys - See above.
-PC elitists who don't realize that there is in fact a PC version of Halo. - Well, of course they know about it, but you seem to have this idea that they are all hugely desperate to get their lips around it's sexy hyper-masculine space marine baby seal. Right here, you are pushing your own ideals upon the reader, using your opinion as fact, implying that all the PC-goers are upset about not being able to access the game, or upset about the principle of an FPS game not being available to the PC.
-Story snobs - Welcome to The Escapist.
-And people who have only played Halo 3 - Once again, you are pushing your ideals on the reader.

Uhhh... I don't know the point on me giving you my personal thoughts, especially when they are completely irrelevant and don't offer any kind of closure, but it's the internet, right?

I've played a little Halo. Stock-standard to me. Seems like every other FPS on the market. But I guess it's fun but NOT worthy of a thread. I mean, fourteen giga-quintadrillion threads.

On the contrary, i found it rather cliché and trite. It presented no interesting ideas, no enthralling turn of events, and the character were just Aliens and Marines copy-pasted from other games and movies. now there's wrong with using Aliens and Marines, District 9 did this and pulled it off quite well, but unlike district 9, Halo gave no interesting play on the concept. Aliens are bad (mostly) and Humans are good basically sums up the entire concept.
On the contray of your contray quite a lot of the characters in Halo have a backstory, it's just a lot of people just play the game moan about it dismiss it as mediocore, sure the gameplay could be better, but i still stand by the story being one of the deepest i've experienced, the whole concept of the halo world is pretty much based around the spartan projects and the battles that take place in turning the tide of battles either for the marines or the covenant.
I'm loving this. Let me guess, you don't read much? Into action movies?

"Back-story" doesn't mean in-depth. Back-story is when you know the characters past's. To be deep, it has to be profound, a powerful statement of human society. You may not realise this, but most deep films are analogies. Statements about humanity. An easy example, which you would be able to understand, is The Truman Show. Everything that the film is about can be summed up with one line: "we accept the reality with which we are presented". Everything in the film revolves around that. You may find this surprising, but South Park: Imagination Land is actually an in-depth parody. A lot of the things that characters do, like when the Man-Bear-Pig comes out of the portal and starts tearing the scientists apart, while they are all shouting things like: "No! It's half man, half bear-pig!" "No! It's half bear, half pig-man!", are actually analogies for human stupidity. The example above is a reference to Global Warming, it's killing us and yet we're still arguing over what it is.

And then, Halo. What is it an analogy for?

By the way, just because you can find an analogy doesn't mean there is one. The authors will always leave hints. Like in The Truman Show, how that line was mentioned during the film, and how in South Park: Imagination Land, the way that they completely broke the rules, making it apparent.

I think I'm a little over-aggressive, this is going to get me into some hot water in the near future.

You'll find that many people here actually like the game, they just hate playing online due to all the prepubescent fanboys spamming their microphones.

In short (if it could get any shorter), we like the game, hate the fanbase.

halo isn't good or bad it's just mediocre.
the people who love halo are fanboys, the people who hate halo hate those fanboys.
