Fanboys are worse, far worse. Not as if this is going to penetrate the particularly thick skulls of the fans but allow me to explain why.
Lets start with God of War fans, God of War was decent, it done well and had a generally appealing story with a likable character. (Or maybe that's just me who liked the generally psychotic main character..) But the game has had a dozen sequels none of which have changed, why? Fans. Fans cannot cope with change to their beloved series, if you differ from the original path you scare people and risk alienating the original fans and thus lose a big chunk of change. So God of War will continue to be the same exact game from here forward.
Onto Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar did a lot of blind stabbing towards the money pot but never managed to actually hit it until Grand Theft Auto 3. The embarrassingly huge amounts of money they make from it makes them unwilling to differ from the formula in fear of scaring off the fragile minds of their fans.
Lastly lets take shots at my favorite target, Final Fantasy. The game has really only changed once, and that was to add 3D graphics. Overall the gameplay has stayed the same since the original in 1987. Let's stop right there, yes there are differences and minor changes but at the end of the day you will always be three schmucks shadowboxing and waiting for your chance to either break a potion over someones head or swing functionally retarded weapons at gibbering little creatures.
I don't blame the developers, I blame the fans, fans create this demand to keep things the same. Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, God of War, games that have potential to be unique but choose not to because its a whole lot fucking easier to release the same game they did a few years back with prettier graphics and a new story. Which is essentially if Atari took Pong, added the ability to customize your ball, made it 3D, and added some story about it being a weapon used by the player to defeat zombie lawyers. All that is really great, but its the SAME FUCKING GAME. The reason why Atari didn't do this is because Pong doesn't have a strong enough fan base to warrant sequels.
So yes, I hate fans, fans cause the death of originality because they are willing to buy the same fucking game they bought four years ago if its got prettier pixelated tits.
