In most Heavy Metal bands the bass is prominent and well known. but most the stereotypes as per usual are false or true depending on who you look at.

The bass is actually THE most important instrument in any band.
So ha.

Also, Slash and Axel Rose from Guns n' Roses.
Massive disagreement.
Drums.
Actually, you're wrong.
The bass is the absolute timekeeper.
Meaning, no matter what, he's always right.

Meaning, he's the most important.
Hmm

Intresting. I guess it varies.

Actually, I've never thought of myself as a timekeeper, but I've seen a few bassists pull the drummer up, however in this case the bassist is amazing and the drummer isn't.

Most of the time I play, I go off the Drummers kick drum (duhh) and use his hi-hat pattern as the sub-division for when I fill. Granted I play mostly groove based stuff (funk, R&B etc) so when I play rock I look at his hats for the sub-division and work off that.

Noooooooooo! A bassist knows that sometimes a pick will suit the sound and feel of the song.

Also - Rock is pretty much the only genre where Bass is put down, and even then, its only in bands or by people who don't really know what they are talking about.
No a bass player thinks that a pick will sometimes suit the music, but then they would be wrong. I stand by the statement a bassist never uses a pick (that only includes plectrums by the way, anything else ie. spoons, drummsticks, chairs etc. are all fine as it just increases the difficulty and can make some really interesting sounds. Although it would get old quickly if used quite alot.
Hmmm.. You sound like one of those guys who tries to play the most complex line they can. Even though somthing simpler would suit the song. If this is the case, I really hope you grow out of it.

Just because you can pound the crap out of the minor pentatonic (with spoons or whatever), doesn't mean you should.
Well you obviously havn't got a bloody clue as to what your talking about as that isn't me. I strive on making things simpler. For example, "hmm I could try and train myself to a stage where I can slap that fast or.... I could just use two fingers to slap with." and now I do.

As for the spoons, I can play bass with spoons, drumsticks, chairlegs but that doesn't mean I do it all the time as it would get dull. I play it that way SOMETIMES because it is FUN which most bass players (not bassists) don't know the meaning of.

Doesent eachband individually decide who acts as time keeper?
From my experience everyone tries their hardest to drown out the bassist for no apparent reason.
Well then you obviously know alot of really thick peopleas the bass is the timekeeper weather a band chooses someone else or not.

I put my vote down on the drummers... my cousin is a drummer in a metal band... and he is far from being musically illiterate, and he's in university studying advanced maths and such... he also is somewhat of a programmer too... so yeah anyone who uses that steriotype kinda rankles me.. an my cousin is just one example of drummers i know who aren't dumb...

Some Rush songs are pretty much this. Definitely check out Malignant Narcissism. Great track
That Track is Awesome, my favourite on the whole album.

OP I think drums, you just have to listen to Rush to understand why.

Bassists are wicked. Pity a fair few bands seem to under use them. Try checking out the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine or Metallica if you think they are useless.

Especially since Neil writes most of the songs.

Fairs enough

I'm still not sure why you think people who use picks to be a different kind of bassist..

I don't think that, I don't think they are bassists at all.

I'm a rhythm guitarist in two bands, a lead in another. I like everyone in both those bands, and I would never want a solo career. So no.

The drummer stereotype annoys me. They should storm off every now and then and watch the song implode with a cynical gaze..

I use a pick. The bassist from Yes also uses one. Lots of bassists in different kinds of rock use picks as well. I also use my fingers for softer songs.

Anyway, absolutes or stereotypes are inherently retarded in music. Anything that even remotely boxes you in is damning to you as a musician. I get annoyed when I hear people spouting rules about music. There are no rules, that's what makes it interesting.

Thick people reject new ideas. Not the other way around.

Not being able to see the picking as a valid form of playing is bad for you, not for the pick bassists. You should do yourself a favor and open up a little bit.

..Kay..

And in the event that someone uses both?
Well in that case they are still using a pick aren't they?
Does it really matter if someone uses fingers, a pick, a bow or even their goddamn ass?

So long as that person lays down a righteous groove, it shouldn't.

Anyway, to be on topic. If find that most musicians I know don't really correspond to their stereotypes or are even complete opposites.

PS: your avatar is quite tasteful.

I would say that the drummer stereotype is a wrong stereotype.

All of the drummers I know have been intelligent and musically talented in more than their main instrument.

Also, I'm a guitarist and I don't fit that stereotype - I know for sure I couldn't last in a solo career and I like the members of my band.

I've never figured it out.. What's wrong with using a pick anyways?

Its awesome for getting a sharper attack, something you can't get with your fingers.
