Yes, you can. If you got a good bass & amp and you know how to use them.zen5887 said:I've never figured it out.. What's wrong with using a pick anyways?
Its awesome for getting a sharper attack, something you can't get with your fingers.

Well then as said in the origional statement they are not BASSISTS, they just play bass.zen5887 said:I use a pick. The bassist from Yes also uses one. Lots of bassists in different kinds of rock use picks as well. I also use my fingers for softer songs.
Captain Bobbossa said:Well then you obviously know alot of really thick peopleas the bass is the timekeeper weather a band chooses someone else or not.
That statement has nothing to do with what I was talking about. WTF?zen5887 said:Thick people reject new ideas. Not the other way around.
Captain Bobbossa said:I don't think that, I don't think they are bassists at all.
You should stop using a pickzen5887 said:Not being able to see the picking as a valid form of playing is bad for you, not for the pick bassists. You should do yourself a favor and open up a little bit.
As a matter of fact yes you can, you kind of slap/slam your index and middle fingers when plucking/strumming/whatever.zen5887 said:I've never figured it out.. And in the event that someone uses both?

So long as that person lays down a righteous groove, it shouldn't.
Anyway, to be on topic. If find that most musicians I know don't really correspond to their stereotypes or are even complete opposites.
PS: your avatar is quite tasteful.
Please stop being a flamebait. Either appreciate that there are different ideas of being a Bassist than your own or stop posting. I personally don't use a pick but realise that it make s a great sound depending on the genre played.Captain Bobbossa said:You should stop using a pick
Yes there are differant ideas however the pick on a bass is a terrible one and one that should not be used.suckmyBR said:Please stop being a flamebait. Just because you care about it doesn't make you not a flamebait. Have you not realised that you're the only one who dislikes the idea of using picks, there are many great bassists that have used picks. Why can you not accept that it makes a good sound for certain genres?Captain Bobbossa said:Yes there are differant ideas however the pick on a bass is a terrible one and one that should not be used.suckmyBR said:Please stop being a flamebait. And I'm not being a flamebait this is something I acctually care a fair bit about.
Yes but if I was a flamebait I would be purposfully doing this to start a fire war thingy (or whatever you call it) which I'm not, t just happens to end up that way.suckmyBR said:Just because you care about it doesn't make you not a flamebait. Also I find it very ironic that you plainly just call everyone who disagrees with you wrong before claiming you aren't being a flamebait.
I can understand what you're getting at. Some people have these preconceptions about what each musicians role should be within a band, and yes, they are annoying. But dismissing a technique because of that is not the answer. It's simply replacing one bias with another. I'm not saying you shouldn't stand up for yourself, but there are other ways.Captain Bobbossa said:As is yours.
The whole Bassist doesn't use a pick thing is all down to standing up for yourself as a musician kinda thing and not being the guitarists ***** which I believe was also one of the guidlines/rules to being a bassist.
hahahaCaptain Bobbossa said:Ok this is getting annoying now.

Okay so I guess I'm an engineer now.Captain Bobbossa said:The Piano (not synth) player is up themselves and snobbish when really they aren't musicians as the keyboard is a MACHINE not an INSTRAMENT.
You can also get a pretty close sound by playing (with fingers) behind your back pick up, about an inch away from the bridge. This is incredibly annoying and can get quite painful, this is why I would use a pick - Strong attack/tone with very little extra effort.Captain Bobbossa said:As a matter of fact yes you can, you kind of slap/slam your index and middle fingers when plucking/strumming/whatever.zen5887 said:I've never figured it out.. EDIT: you can also do this thing which I like to call flicking, which is pretty self explanitory where you flick alternativly with your index and thumb using your nails.
I used to be like this, about a year and a half into my playing I grew up...Captain Bobbossa said:The whole Bassist doesn't use a pick thing is all down to standing up for yourself as a musician kinda thing and not being the guitarists ***** which I believe was also one of the guidlines/rules to being a bassist.
Can you fix said instrament?Brendon said:Okay so I guess I'm an engineer now.
Well then you obviously havn't got very strong fingures as I have never found/heard of anyone finding that painful before.Zen5887 said:You can also get a pretty close sound by playing (with fingers) behind your back pick up, about an inch away from the bridge. I didn't say anything about an amp?Zen5887 said:As for the amp thing, if you can get an awesome attack with your fingers and an amp, you can get an even better attack with a pick and an amp.
Noo you just thought you did because you can follow a trend. Well done.Zen5887 said:I used to be like this, about a year and a half into my playing I grew up...
