i cant believe we are arguing over an omelet and a roast dinner but anyway.

I'd say the egg simply because the chicken had to of hatched from the egg to start the chickens (if that makes sense)

in about 10,0000 years we'll be arguing "what came first the [insert evolved chicken name here] or the egg"

but yeh chickens will probably die out before then =\

My friend's dad actually figured it out, it all depends on your religious beliefs. If you believe a higher power created the universe then the chicken came first. But if you believe in evolution the egg came first and the chicken was just a mutation.
i agree with you, you've changed my answer =)

Evolution occurs during reproduction, where enough mutation occurs that the offspring is different enough from the parent.

Thus it was the egg that heralded what we know as the modern chicken, because the animal that laid it is different enough to be known by another species.
a bit like the ugly duckling?

According to the Bible, God created all the birds. So definitely the chicken first.

The Egg. How is this even an argument?

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
The Rooster.

I refuse to answer this question on the grounds that It cannot be answered

Neither side can prove the veracity of their claim. No matter how much evidence they bring forth, they cannot prove it without some kind of time-travel shit. i.e. Impossible.

This argument is now rendered moot.

The chicken, evolution allowed creatures to evolve into various birds, including the chicken, and after evolving then they began laying eggs, or for any creationists out there, god put chickens here, then they layed eggs.

You cannot ask questions like these on the internet because everyone will take it literally and will absolutely refuse to understand it's a philosophical question. We had this before with the question if a falling tree makes a sound if nobody is around.

Yeah, I got a LOT of rage from that, and I enjoyed every bit.

Egg because it had to be laid by something first.

Also omelets are better than fried chicken. For breakfast anyway.

Oh by the way.
To explain my last post.

You mean CHICKEN egg, which came first, chicken or chicken egg. Otherwise it doesn't work.
Hell even then there are issues.

Is a chicken egg:
a) An egg laid by what we classify as a chicken
b) An egg which contains and hatches what we classify as a chicken
or
c) An egg which is laid by what we classify a chicken to be, and thus contains and hatches another such chicken.

Of course then you need to define what makes a chicken. Prior to the chickens we have now, they could have been bigger, smaller, longer/shorter beaked, they may have had a different diet, may have had greater or lesser capacity for flight and so on.

well if you mean any egg I'll say egg then.....I'm sure some kind of creature shat an egg out way before the chicken even existed.

The egg.
Because chickens probably evolved from a different species of bird.
Chicken because all lifeforms evolved from single celled organisms which didn't lay eggs.
Yes, but there were many species of animals that lay eggs that came long before the chicken.

There should be some clarification here, though; by "egg" are we speaking strictly chicken eggs or any egg at all?

uh. the chicken obviously got here first. because only a chicken can lay a chicken egg.

most mutations occur after an animal is alive, not before.

That's what really matters when you get down to it.

But if you want to get serious I suppose some sort of dinosaur came first. Name it what you want lol.

A species of bird that was almost chicken evolved more and more like the chicken we have today until finally a bird with extremely close DNA to a chicken made an egg of an actual chicken and incubated it, fed it, etc.
