Depends on the genre, like most others have said.

Most games: Normal

Shooters: Veteran/Legendary/Insanity/Hardest/etc.

For some reason every FPS seems like a complete cakewalk on normal or hard. They're barely any fun at all without challenge.

I pick easy most of the time because I am more interested in the story than the gameplay, although I use the game play as a stress reliever and an immersifier (if that is a word). I only go on the harder difficulties if a: Story is lacking (ie fighting and racing games, these i normally go with normal/ highest difficulty) b: Achievements and i feel achievement whore-ish and c: Playing on high difficulties with friends is endlessly amusing. Perfect example is L4D2, with 3 friends on expert in the mall level. We were at the part where we just climbed over the dumpster and were heading into the building, all of us with low health (50 or lower).

Dan (who had the least: 30 temp health) goes into the building first and shouts TAAANNNKKK! He runs back to us, and finds Andy dead, and Jeremy and i barely alive, and says to run, cause he will take care of the tank. It Bursts through the door frame at which point dan, again, screams: Fuck you, Tank!!, and runs at it with a chainsaw. The tank hits him and kills him.

ugh i'm tired, but yeah usually the hardest i can without it being an unlockable difficulty. If I want to play my game I want there to be some challenge to it. Also, nothing else really feels more accomplishing than beating a good hard game. It gives you the extra feel of achievement and in some cases it is a great test of patience and perserverence. Especially blowtorch and corkscrew for goddamn Call of Duty:World at War. That game's grenade spam drove me nuts.

First time? Normal. If it's too easy in the first hour, I restart and go hard.
Thats what she said.

And usually I play on normal, but for easy games like Torchlight, ill start on hard or hardest

Most of the time, normal. Occasionally easy, if it's rts game, because I'm not very good at those games.

Usually normal, but sometimes I'll go all out and play ultra hard realism mode with weapon damage multipliers on to see how far I can go.

Normal because I have security issues about playing on Easy and I don't like putting up with the added difficulty which is usually just more frustrating than it is a challenge.
I find there is a VERY fine line between a hard game and a frustrating game, so normal is good enough for me.

Two things when it comes to me and games: I'm a bit of a masochistic gamer and I find a lot of today's games ridiculously easy, even when played on the second to hardest difficulty.

Oh, and for all the games with unlockable difficulties? Screw you, I don't WANT to have to play through the same crap EIGHT TIMES to unlock the difficulty I WANT.

I play on the hardest most the time, mainly because I'm an achievement whore. That's why games like Alan Wake make me angry, not being able to play on the harder difficulties the first playthrough. Then there are games like CoD4,5, and 6 where I played on the hardest difficulties first and, though I managed to beat them in the end, wanted to bash my head in a lot.

Hardest, unless it's reputed to be particularly difficult or is a game I don't expect to be good at (typically I'm slow to learn RPGs, so I Start on the second hardest setting). I don't tend to replay games, so the hardest option guarantees I don't miss anything, often it means that I'll end up in a silly bossfight with cheap moves or quicktime event(metal gear solid 2 springs to mind, with the silly tap square to not die quick time event).

Second hardest first time, then the hardest, then the easiest if I replay it. With every Bioware game I play on the easiest difficulty setting so that I can get through the combat and get to the interesting parts.

Hard. Games today are way to easy for the seasoned gamer, and without challenge, there is little fun to games.

I usually opt for the normal route, since I like fooling myself into beliving that I'm not a pussy with no skills and hard is often rather difficult for me.

Depends on the game and genre, for something I'm fully comfortable with like Gears, COD or Halo I'll generally go for hardest straight off. Though if I just want to know the story I may just go on easy, oh and if there are no difficulty achievements on an Xbox game I'll generally go for the easiest first up just to get it done, as much of a whore as I sound from that I'm really not.
