They are both AMAZING doctors, but I'll go with tennent here.
Mainly due to the charater of his doctor. Less crazy the smiths's but more badass. I like my doctors crazy and badass.
I will always remeber tennents for.
'what sort of man am I'
Alien charges at him with a sword
the doctor throws an orange at a button causing the alein to fall
'A no second chances man thats what kind of man'
and for smiths
'I like bowties, bowties are cool'
and
'I like fezes now, fezes are cool'

I have tried, but can not get in to Matt Smith's Doctor. Ecclestone was good, but Tennant is an amazing actor. He had me totally suspending disbelief, hard for this skeptic. He drew me in to the show hook, line and sinker. I guess I will just have to get used to the fact that everything changes, especially The Doctor. Well, at least I have my DVDs.

Definitely Tennant. The guy looks so much more alien than Matt Smith. Those beady eyes, the goofy hair, overall lankiness. I know that timelords are supposed to look like humans, but they're still aliens. It feels more real to me if they look strange.

Also, bowties are not cool.

David Tennant, I loved his mannerisms and just his whole presence. I was sad to see him go but I do still enjoy all the doctors in some way or another.

I'm biased toward David Tennant since he's the first doctor I'd seen for more than 1 season.
Matt Smith is still awesome though.

Tennant. Matt Smith is too immature and ridiculous (not too say Doctor Who shouldn't be ridiculous; I'm referring to his style of acting).
The Doctor was always intelligent and very often driven if not very serious. Matt Smith's Doctor is just a child.

I first saw Doctor Who in 1982 on cable superstation WOR (NY) USA on a Sunday morning. It was a Tom Baker episode. I liked it, but I thought the production was worse than the original series of Star Trek from the mid 1960's. After being spoiled by then (today?? LOL) "The Incredible Hulk", "The Six Million Dollar Man", and "Battlestar Gallactica", Doctor Who looked cheaply produced.

When Netflix made the modern Doctor Who's available, along with some of the famous older episodes, I now get "it". It's all about "The Doctor" who plays the role.

As much as I wanted to hate Matt Smith, he's damn good. Prior to Smith, I still believe David Tennant is the best Doctor. Matt Smith was too young to see the old Doctor Who. David Tennant brought back the Tom Baker version without the snarky remarks. I also have a fondness for Jon Pertwee. Tennant is the best doctor!

Christopher Eccleston.
Actually, I did like Christopher Eccleston. I liked him. Although I am just getting into the franchise, so meh.

Matt Smith is much more alien and yet emotional as well. Plus, the way he delivers his LOL lines is wonderful. I think David Tennant would have been better if Stephen Moffat had written him.

That's exactly why he was so good!

I'm finally at the point where I have suspended disbelief for so long that I no longer can compare. I love The Doctor! Each time he regenerates, he grows in the same way that we grow up - the individual actor's portrayal allows that to happen.
I loved Chris E. as he was my first doctor, then with David T. I can't help but love a man who rocks the Chuck Taylor's, and Matt S. has been so much new fun since showing up, I still feel like I am getting to know him!
