None, I've had shitheads as well as nice guys on all of those.
And I have played all of those types of games for substantial amounts, why wouldn't other people be the same?
Therefore, you can't say any of those "types" of gamers are more pleasant than the other.

I'm gonna say single-player because they don't usually have a competitive nature.
I'm going with this. With adding: single player games discussions usually have nothing to flame each other about, as any decision made has 0 impact on other people.

I'm thinking that old school gamers are nicer most of the time. They almost always seem misty-eyed and lost due to the nostalgia... that should definitely be a drug.
My problem with them is that they're a powder keg waiting for a spark. You tell them you didn't like Super Smash Bros as much as you liked Gears of War or something, and they will explode and tear you to tiny little pieces.

I have to go with this one. Not so much that they like people, it's just that the lack of competiveness means that they are the lesser of the evils. They may not be good with people, but at least it's hard to piss them off.

Yeah I noticed that after I hit the post button. Really I think it depends on the person, not whose more prone to competitiveness. Hell I play TF2 and COD4 (online) a lot and I'm not yelling you down for disagreeing with my original statement. So really I guess it doesn't matter who palys what, it just matters how they act around people.

did you read my disclaimer?
i guess i should've added "I also recognize that people don't play game genres exclusively"

I have to vote for a large portion of TF2 players. Being a noob who just got the game last thursday, I have run into an amazingly large number of well mannered, helpful players. They are accepting of the fact that I am not good yet, they give me pointers, and are generally not douchebags, unlike say, Halo.

And I'm saying all genres contain individuals which don't have their personality determined by the games they play.

Agreed. I've logged somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 hours in TF2, exclusively on public servers, and the amount of assholes I've run into I could count on one hand. People actually use their headsets for team communication, you know, a constructive usage of the technology. I don't know what it is, but TF2 players seem much more well-behaved and committed to having a good time.

I might go on to say that the reason is that PC gamers are better behaved than 360 gamers, but that of course is not entirely true. In my much more limited playtime of Counter-Strike or DotA, I ran into several players that weren't necessarily yelling at me but were engaged in a lot of the crap we tend to pin on the Halo folks.

Well I don't think that there is a link between being 'nice' and what kind of games people play. Perhaps how social people are can be linked to what they play, but even then it's tenuous link.
Perhaps the most pleasant are the ones who don't vehemently stick to one genre, I find they're less likely to shove their preferences at me when I talk to them.

It's (almost) random I'd say...

I've met my fair share of nice people over the years, and of course the occasional internet tough guy.

Yesterday some moron shot me in l4d despite the fact that I had just saved him from a hunter - the genius had strayed far from the group. Anyhow he shot me and called me a MOTHER WH*RE, and I would like to think that nice people are abundant in COOP games... but nay.

Even so I put my chip in with multiplayer games like l4d, due to my experience with shooters I really doubt they are to be found there, though sometimes I am surprised.

I'd lean toward MMO players myself. Played FFXI and only met a few complete idiots over two years. If we're going to break it down to folks you meet online in games by genre then-

FPS: "You mother(insert five minutes of expletives straight into your ear here)!" On the whole, not a polite bunch. Must be the testosterone kicking in. The nicest folks tend to be those without headsets, followed by those who do have headsets but actually want to talk tactics. Or just talk about stuff.

RPG/MMO: "????????????????????" Boy, I do love a functional swear filter. I wouldn't really say they were any more polite, but they are more helpful.

Classic Gamer: Depends on the person I guess. Also the level of fanboyism. I'm old school, but I don't harp on about how Creatures 2: Torture Trouble on the C64 was the best game ever. It was pretty freakin' sweet though. I mean seriously, that level with the chainsaw death... Oops, sorry, got nostalgic. A lot of old school gamers are hitting their 30's now. As far as I can tell, we're a pretty mellow bunch.

Those are just my experiences mind.

Shooter's are my fave.
People online are nice to you, and don't swear you out if you don't make a headshot. If you make a mistake, they understand.

NOW, mmorpg peoples, will haunt you.
you Do something they don't like and they explode on you.

I really don't think you can really group people like this. Things vary hugely within each genre.

For example, Halo and Counterstrikes are well known, rightly or wrongly, for an unusually high 'arsehat count' (AHC), whilst Team Fortress 2 (And probably 1) seem to have a low number of arses and even, *gasp* team work! Left 4 Dead prompts co-operation and for the most part, those players are polite.

As for 'classics' players only, I would say they are very impolite due to the high levels of fanboyisms that is normally the reason they stick with an old classic.

But aside from that, all groups have about the same AHC I'd say.

Are there actually people who play only one type of game religiously? Besides the people who exclusively play Microsoft Flight Simulator or Manager games, I've never met any. Most gamers tend to have a broader interest, so I think the question is a little pointless.

Every group has it's own bastards and it's own nice people. Frankly, 'the most pleasant' gamers are the ones you don't play with, who aren't on the internet, and don't interact with anyone.

This is almost a "what are you" thread, because everyone will vote for their type
