Oblivion, I can't stand the Fallout 3 "radiation caused all this beneficial mutation" crap. In reality, everything would get DNA damage and die.
well you find that a lot of them were government projects.
Government projects experimenting with radiation. Not government projects either, the vaults were run by an independent contractor

Nobody said anything about experimenting with radiation. The results of radiation in general screwed stuff up, like those two headed cow things. The vaults were to experiment with various kinds of social situations and psychological effects of things on the human mind. The super mutants were just another super soldier experiment gone wrong, working with genetics not radiation.

Fallout 3, hands down. It had a far more immersive and interesting world than Oblivion's rather generic fantasy forests. VATS gave combat something unique as opposed to the bland hack n' slash of Oblivion. Fallout also had much better quests and character interactions, and the Karma system was a bit more relevant than the near-pointless fame/infamy thing. Honeslty, it may have been the most immersive game I've ever played, poor animations notwithstanding. Oblivion was fun, but it never sucked me in the way Fallout does.

I'm enjoying Oblivion more because it has more mystery to it, but that's my fault. When I played Fallout 3 I used the Fallout wiki and then became aware of everything around every corner. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this really watered down the experiance.

Oblivion, there's far more content expanding mods and much more to do in the vanilla game world.

But only by a hair, I enjoy both games very very much.

The story in Oblivion never really interested me as much as Fallout's does.. And Fallout lets you shoot things, but Oblivion lets me cut people up and shoot fire at them.. I'd have to choose Fallout 3 as the winner, Oblivion was close though.

Although, part of the reason why I hated the Oblivion gates was because the Plains of Oblivion felt barren to me compared to Cyrodiil. Yes, I know, it's hell, it's SUPPOSED to be, but there's a difference between empty-barren and devoid-of-life-barren. Cyrodiil was a world full of culture and history. From my readings on Oblivion, and certain signs seen in the game, Oblivion is similar albeit structured vastly differently from anything found in Cyrodiil. But instead of finding a world that should have sparked intrigue and fear into a mysterious and little known (and perhaps slightly misunderstood) world, you're just given a bland description of hell. the Plains of Oblivion were, in my opinion, the least engaging of all the aspects of the game, accept in combat - most of my toughest battles occurred there.
Well, that's because it's Mehrune Dagon's specific part of Oblivion, and he lords over the barren wasteland part. You get to see Sheogorath's realm in Shivering Isles, and it's awesome. I'm pretty sure each Daedric lord has their own specific realm.

Well the other thing that I thought about is that the sections of Oblivion you saw were essentially fortresses - they were trying to conquer an entire world, after all. Still, the developers could have engaged us (the players) more with the culture of Mehrune Dagon's plain.
What culture? He's the lord of natural disasters and war and bloody guts and stuff. I think the blood-covered spikes, flaming corpses nailed to walls, and storage bags made from internal organs speak for themselves. Blood, guts, and violence IS his culture. He's not much concerned with beauty. The most you get otherwise is a few books talking about the nature of Dremora and stuff.

Oblivion had much more to do.

The OP basically said everything I was going to. The only problem I had with Fallout 3 though was that I really couldn't play it for more than about 15 minutes without getting depressed, but I got over it.
The sad thing is, Fallout is pretty optimistic about post-nuclear earth.
True. I just couldn't get over when I would see a bunch of people getting attacked by Raiders and them looting their corpses. It just freaked me out.
