Recently I watched Spirited Away, having seen it only once before and that was years ago.

I was shocked. I had probably found the best movie I had ever seen. I didn't cry once, not even twice, but three times during the movie. I had never been so moved by a film. Absolutely everything clicked into place. I watched it soon after a second time, and it was every bit as good as the first time. But there was a problem.

For a long time I held Toy Story 3 as the best movie I have ever seen because I can't find a single flaw in it. But Spirited Away really blew me away, and since I can't let anything be equal to something else, I've been trying to decide which one I like more. Hence this poll.

I'm not asking you to decide for me, I'd just like your opinions on which is better. I'll probably watch both movies many times to come and still not come to any conclusion, but I thought this might be a topic worth talking about.

Comments, please

Can't really make a comparison due to not having seen Toy Story 3 (or 2 for that matter), so Spirited Away would win by default.

But, I'm curious, is this your first Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli film? You should really watch them all, top notch stuff there.
Personally, Princess Mononoke is my favorite.

Very difficult to say, they're both very good animated films but in different ways, I'm going to vote Spirited Away here but that's partly because I like the whole Japanese mythology part, it's down to personal preference really.

Spirited Away by far. Toy Story 3 was the weakest of the Toy Story films for me; but regardless of which Toy Story film you had specified, I'd still say Spirited Away. In fact I prefer just about any Hayao Miyazaki film to any Pixar film...except for Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro. They're just kind of childish and weak in the story department. there's a lot of padding in them as well that isn't even interesting and they don't hold the same transcendence of age that Miyazaki's other films tend to. Of course it's all a matter of taste. Personally I could watch Spirited Away over and over again, but Toy Story 3 was much less of an experience the second time.

What's better, the Ferrari F12 spotscar or the Monaco Knight luxury RV? F12 is fast and all, but it's interior space pales in comparison to the expansive Monaco Knight RV.

It is by no means the first film. After watching Ponyo I instanty fell in love with the films, and have watched all the most important ones, i.e. Mononoke, Totoro, NausicaƤ, Laputa and so on. I'm goin to stay away from Grave of the Fireflies for now, because I fear that film would make me want to stab my liver and cry my soul out.

Oh it probably will. I've only been able to watch it the whole way through once. Can't watch it in one sitting without turning into a wreck...

OT: Erm... Spirited Away, since TS3 is good and all, but it's too much of a rehash of TS2. And there's a perfect combo of grandeur, expansiveness and intimacy in Spirited Away.

I'm bias to say Spirited Away since I only seen Toy Story at the cinema only (I did however bought the DVD recently which I should watch it soon). Also Spirited Away is a stand alone film while Toy Story 3 is the third film of the triliogy meaning they didn't had to establist the main characters (well ok they did with the new characters).

I could write essays comparing the two but in the end a lot of the reasons I like spirited away better tend to be more biased of production types.

Am I the only one that thought Spirited Away was kind of weak? The girl annoyed me at the start so I had a hard time caring about her, her parents were idiots, and it just seemed more so like Labyrinth or Alice in Wonderland in that it only wanted to show this world they created, rather than make a top notch story.

I tend to agree about showing the world part, but I think that's where it really shines. The world was beautiful, the story was simplistic, but that doesn't make it bad.

OT: If I had to choose? Toy story, but only if I can fiddle with the question and make it the trilogy. I liked spirited away, but was never blown away by it. Not that I was with toy story, but I still found it to be better

They are VERY.VERY different films. Comparing them is really pointless, but if you ask me which one i enjoyed the most? Spirited Away.
Mostly because i felt Toy Story 3 was overrated, not bad mind, just overrated.
The whole Andy being stupidly attatched to his toys annoyed me, HECK i have a terrible peter pan complex and i don't care for toys. So it seemed unrealistic and isntead of touching my heart it poked me on the back of the head for the duration of the movie.

Spirited away had no such issue, it was a truly magical tale, with pants tightening visuals and animation and some impressive direction, I wouldn't have expected anything less from it's pedigree.
It was just overall a better constructed film and story.

My vote falls for Ghibli Studios and Miyazaki. Spirited Away by far. Traditional animation will just about always win over computer animation in my eyes. There's just far more magic in them.

But in all honesty, you just can't compare two different styles of film-making so easily.

Spirited Away is my favourite of the two due partially to my adhesion to anything Japanese, and anything anime styled. But mostly to my adoration of Hayao Miyazaki. Another Miyazaki film (Totoro) was what got me into anime, more or less, and I think every single one of his films are truly incredible. I highly recommend every other Studio Ghibli film out there, especially Nausicaa and Laputa. True masterpieces, in my eyes.

Hmm can't really compare them considering one's a trilogy and another is a stand-alone film. Which one did I enjoy more? I'd say Spirited Away, only because I've seen it many times. I used to have a fear of being left behind in an isolated place but I've gotten over that.

I've personally never been a huge fan of Toy Story movies. Not that I hate them either, I can tell they're good movies, but they just never clicked to me.

So Spirited away, although I prefer Totoro.

I've never liked anime (don't hurt me) or Toy Story (Pleeeease don't hurt me.). In fact I'd like to add an option; A Scanner Darkly... Okay so that's got one vote...

OT: Well having never seen Spirited Away (and I'm never going to!) and having seen 5 minutes of Toy Story 3 (and I'm never going to finish it!) I guess Toy Story 3 wins.
