This thread has been done to death. There's like 2 of these every week and having a poll limits the options of choice so the numbers are skewed from the start.
You must also consider the fact that Batman Arkham City isn't out on PC yet so there will be those who haven't played it yet.

Please, all of you who want to make a thread like this. Wait until the god damn year is over!

However of all the game I've played so far Deus Ex wins.

Skyrim will probably be GOTY for most people, but IMO it should go to Minecraft. Yes, its hard to say Minecraft "came out" this year, but since it has been officially "released," this year is the only year we can really count it as eligible.

In addition to being the game that I have sunk more hours into than any other, Minecraft will, I believe, change gaming. Not because of its gameplay--though there are people following that formula--but because of its development style. Minecraft built up a community, and it kept that community happy. And people in that happy community helped make the community larger. And that made Mojang money. And money is something that game developers and publishers (especially publishers) will not ignore. So expect to see more games being built in a manner similar to Minecraft. Notch has changed the industry, or at least the indie industry, and so he, his game, and his team deserve a nice shinny medal.

I'm sorry, but The Witcher 2 made the list but Gears 3 did not?

And Skyrim is the answer to this question.
Yes, I don't see anything wrong with that, TW2 > GW3.
You state clearly that this post is intended for public opinion, yet a rather obscure PC exclusive RPG overshadows one of the most recognizable and influential series of this console generation? I call shenanigans.
Recognizable yes, influential no. Well at least I hope not lol. More color, less cover kthx.

TW2 is a little bit more than an obscure PC RPG btw.

My vote goes to Portal 2, but i'm sure the overwhelming winner in this forum will be Skyrim.
At the risk of sounding like an obsessive fanboy ready to defend Gears at the drop of a hat, I feel that anyone denying the impact the series has had over this console generation to be just a little silly. The first Gears of War started the online co-op revolution that inspired dozens of games as well as setting the benchmark for how competitive online multiplayer would be held up to. Yeah, sure the first two games had bland color: that doesn't change the fact that they left a significant imprint on this generation of games. Aside from that, I mean to say nothing negative against The Witcher: it just so happens that I think if you asked every person on the face of the world which is more relevant and held up a copy of The Witcher 2 in one hand and Gears of War 3 in the other, the majority would choose Gears of War 3.

...but then again, who cares, it's just an Internet forum poll, I guess my one off comment in a boredom stasis shouldn't have regarded this as the definitive absolute judgement of the opinions of all of mankind that will be recorded in the history books. For that, I apologize.

The problem is that we're talking about game of the year, not game series of the year. Gears of War 3 didn't bring pretty much anything to the table, the campaign is alot worse that the other two in my opinion and the multiplayer is mostly the same concept. That's why Modern Warfare 3, for example, has zero chances of getting the prize as well.

I'll agree that there are better options than The Witcher 2, such as Uncharted 3 or Batman , which both have huge chances of winning this year.

i hoenstly thought deus ex HR has a shot at GOTY because of the somewhat innovative ideals, strategies and moments in the game.

i know that deus ex 1 was better and more deep and innovative but i know that alot of people didn't play deus ex the first time around

Skyrim is the only reason my PS3 I got last year is out of its box.

Easily GOTY, especially once a patch comes.

i dont see why GOW3 is appealing, its honestly very dull and the main characters were un-sympathetic

this is not judgement but just asking why

I think that Skyrim will win GOTY, but I would like to see BF3 get it on at least one system. I have to be honest here, with all the FPS games starting to feel the same, the only difference being the application of vehicles via kill streaks or just always having them there, I found BF3 to be exactly what I needed. It's fun, fast paced, with a good community that knows that winning isn't just about your KDR and without a lot of the annoying 12 year-olds on their mics constantly. I also found that the weapon mods you can add to be an excellent thing to fiddle around with and while there are a few things I would like to see change, it has probably saved the FPS genre for me.

Missing Dark Souls, Arkham City, and The Old Republic which just scrapes in on the 20th. There's probably one or two more that I forgot.

Also, BF3 and MW3 have no business being on a GOTY list.

Skyward sword all the way, there's only one thing I need to say BETTER THAN OCARINA OF TIME,Skyward sword is the best zelda game ever made, and in a series with as many quality and plain brilliant titles as zelda does that is saying something. Seriously PLAY THIS GAME
Yech. I respect your opinion and will agree to disagree. Zelda has been overdone for me and has been for a while now. I don't think that it will be a "bad" game per-se but any title that is released on the Wii has already lost me. With the technology available to make games that look like BF3, MW3, Skyrim et all it ASTOUNDS me that Nintendo chose to barely update the graphics of the game cube as their primary money maker and that they haven't released a competitive (graphic wise)machine yet. I suppose the fact that it still outsells the higher end machines is impressive, but rather than speaking to good games I suspect it says more about the brand loyalty Nintendo has cultivated over the years. But that's just me.

Honestly. This list is too short. The games on there are great nothing against them, but it misses a few titles.

Zelda Skyward Sword,Dark Souls and Batman most notable. And Uncharted3 in a lesser extent.
My personal favorite for the year, The Witcher2, thankfully made this list. Which makes me smile : )

This is a pretty hard year to tell and I am hoping for either Deus Ex: Human Revelation or Skyward Sword but I am fairly certain Skyrim will most likely be the winner. It is a pretty good game but it isn;\'t my "cup-of-tea" so to speak. Then again, I have yet to play any of the Elder Scrolls series so who knows.

I know Skyrim will get it but I really liked Batman Arkham City and Saints Row the third, just because a game is immature doesn't mean it can't get GotY

My personal favorite 2011 release is Bastion, with a runner-up being the criminally underrated Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine.
Give this man a medal.

I love Skyrim and all, and taunting my brother with is since his computer died the day before release, but Bastion is the game this year that surprised me the most. I knew Skyrim would be good, I had subtle hopes as to Bastion being decent, having watched a few videos over it. What I got KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF. The soundtrack is my second most played album on my iPod already. (Dethroning the #1 slot is near impossible)

To all the people whining about no Skyward Sword on there, I wonder if you actually have beaten the game yet. Because it's clearly not a contender, it's barely even good, let alone a good Zelda game. Enjoy your super drawn out fetch quest finale!

I was going to say Skyrim because of the game style appealing to me slighty ( very, very, slightly I might add) more than Arkham City.

However, the OP seems to want a more generalized view. Fine. . .

It seems to me that Arkham City should win, if only because Skyrim does have occasional, and from my experience, largely irrelevant gameplay issues. Whereas Arkham City had no " glitches, bugs, or lag" Of course, considering that Skyrim is significantly more complex than Arkham City, the problems are pretty forgivable.

Regardless, Arkham City, by all rights, should win. . . or at the very least be running in a tie with Skyrim.

Also, the idea of putting MW3 and Battlefield 3 on a list of potential GOTY winners is laugable. Because let's face it, it will be mere popularity ( read: buying their way onto the list) that would cause either of those games to be considered, and not the actual brilliance, depth, and detail that the games offer. ( Which I say, while ignoring how much I enjoy Battlefield 3 multiplayer)

Not to be hating on Skyrim but it didn't really bring anything new to the RPG.

I vote Minecraft. More over because i haven't seen very many successful sandbox games like it before. And i mean actualy sandbox, as in there isn't even a goal, not even surviving is a goal in the game.
Exactly, I voted Minecraft too. Minecraft really is a new and interesting game. Skyrim, while cool with the dragons and such, really isn't that new or awesome.

Bastion had one the most cringe-worthy narratives out of any game I've played, I could only imagine obsessive patriots and military boys appreciating it. The anime-style also didn't sit well with me and the game seemed way too drawn out. The role-playing was pretty good but the whole game is certainly overrated for all the praise I've seen for it on here.

This poll is frankly a joke. It doesn't include many of the games that came out this year, hell it doesn't even include Skyward Sword which while I haven't played I have nonetheless heard many good things about from people who have already played it, including people who weren't looking forwards to it but played or watched it anyways.

I really wouldn't have included The Witcher 2 but not Gears of War 3. I'm not a fan of either series, but I can tell you which has more fans.

Since GotY is completely opinionated, for me it's either:

From Dust or Skyrim.

I've replayed From Dust three times and done its challenges twice; that's about 50 hours game time for a game designed to only be about 8-14 hours. Highly recommended if you like innovative Black & White / Populace-esque God Games.

Skyrim takes the crown for me though as it's exactly as I expected and more. The only negative I can think of game-wise is that dialogue options seem a little less diverse and less varied again; and the College of Winterhold & the Dark Brotherhood seemed shorter than their guild counterparts in Oblivion as Oblivion was shorter than Morrowind.

Right, own up - who the fuck voted for Modern Warfare 3? - explain yourself as to how CoD beats games like SR3 or Portal 2 or Skyrim or even Battlefield 3 (which is CoD but good)? Jeez, why come on a gaming forum if you've only ever played CoD? That piece of recycled shit would struggle to win Game of the Day on release, as the "watching paint dry" game played on its case was more entertaining due to the cock-shaped décor I implemented in peach. tsh.
