Well, if it's an old dude for all you know he knows how to fight in a real war and could kick your ass in any theatre, so that's not so humiliating.

Depends on the game.
Being thrashed across town by the elderly when playing a game that depends mostly on fine-motor control and hand-to-eye coordination is clearly more humiliating than having them kick your ass at Civilisation X.
Likewise being tabled playing Chess by a twelve-year-old is clearly a more embarrassing event than being mercilessly served by the same child during a game of Halo.

I don't play online, but I would think that the punk-ass kid would be more... nauseating anyway.

EDIT: I don't find either humiliating. If I'm in a team game and there's no one on my team who sounds ~12 I assume we're going to lose.
Kids have all the time in the world to play games so they're usually better.
Old dudes are generally respectful and there's no shame in losing to a respectful opponent.

I'd say the old guy for one reason. If your playing with an idiot kid who's yelling into his headset and your getting killed by him, your getting killed for two reasons
1) he spends every living hour playing that game and is actually pretty good at it or...
2) Your distracted by his retarded monkey screams and for that reason your getting killed
if you get killed by an old guy you have another two reasons why you fail
1) he's actually pretty good at the game
2) YOU SUCK AT THIS GAME.
