The economy is in a downspiral as we all know, and I havn't seen a PS3 under 400 dollars yet, maybe i'm not looking hard enough, but back to the point. The PS2 is reasonably priced and has a huge game selection, while the PS3 does have better graphics and internet capabilities, is still very expensive, And no one I know has more than 5 or 6 games for it. So, which would be a smarter buy?

I would go with the PS2, like you said lot's more great games. In my opinion graphics mean very little in terms of value, yes it's nice to see photo realistic graphics but I love sprites and the like. I really don't see any reason to buy a PS3 unless you need to play LBP or Killzone 2.

Well that depends on a lot of things. Do you like to play online? Does a blu-ray player matter to you? Would you be willing to wait a couple of months to see if the rumored PS3 price drop pans out?

If you can find a refurbished or new 60gb PS3 I would just get that. But frankly it just comes down to what games you want to play.

PS2 without a doubt.

You'll probably die of old age before you play through every good game for it.

(I've got both by the way)

The ps2 is is probably the system I would pick if someone put a bomb in my body and told me i could play one and only one console for the rest of my life or I would blow up.

There are more than enough quality titles to keep anyone busy, plus the cross compatibility with the PS1.

The PS3 price drop is coming (So we hope) along with it's strong lineup this year, I'd go for the oozing black monolith of gloss and Blue Ray.

Just buy a backwards-compatible PS3 on eBay. The graphical improvements have to be seen to be believed.
Even if you get a ps2 compatible ps3 only an odd 80% of titles work for it.

I still play my PS2 and even though I loved my PS1 and 2. I draw the line at buying the PS3 due to cost and lack of decent, platform exclusive games.

If you want a LOT of good games, go with the PS2. If the graphics and online are that important, get a 360 instead of the PS3. The 360 has a VERY easy to use interface, costs less, and has way more good games. Although If you absolutely must play a PS3 I gotta say you're gonna get about the same experience anyhow. They're all games, right?

Well the PS2 is still the console for JRPGs so if you like those get it. I wouldn't recommend a 360 I have already lost 2 to gremlins and you have to pay for the internet with them.

Well, the PS2 is a great console in every way. Not the most updated, but definitiely a solid gaming hardware box.
I suggest that you get one of the anorexic ones, though, since a lot of the old ones won't play the old purple-back games.

All the big names work flawlessly or are in the process of getting patched. The ~20% in question is mostly made up of junk that was released years ago and forgotten about. You can check beforehand, anyway: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

And I haven't had any problems, not even minor glitches.
I'm in the same boat here, I only recently discovered that compatability check thingy but have yet to run into any sorts of problems atall beyond the occasional "game failed to save/load" problem which is easily remedied by hitting the save/load button again.

Incidentally thats with an old 80 gb, not a 60.

I would go with my PS2 just because it has more games for it. PS3 is still too expensive and doesn't have that many games.
