So I finally saw Guardians of the Galaxy tonight because my girlfriend had a pair of free movie tickets and there was nothing else out. There is no other way to put in other than I was blindsided by how good this movie was.

I saw the Avengers sometime after it was released, and found it to be a chore to sit through. A few funny moments, boring and mindless action scenes. Overall, I just found it to be very lackluster. I know this isn't the opinion of most people, as the movie was insanely popular, but I never really got why. I appreciate what it did in terms of having all the characters from separate movies coming together in one place, but it just did nothing for me.

I honestly expected a very similar experience with Guardians of the Galaxy, although I had a little more hope because of how well advertised it was. But from the opening scene, I was blown away. The characters were incredible. The chemistry between them was almost palpable.

The thing that surprised me the most, however, was how much I enjoyed the locations in the movie. It took me a while to really figure out why, but I did. I normally hate CGI. I thought Avatar was mediocre at best, the prequel Star Wars movies looked terrible. I just generally prefer real sets. However, the clearly made effort to have a style throughout the whole movie was what made it unique. It was over the top. It knew it was over the top, and it embraced it. Instead of CGI that is trying so hard to look realistic, it embraced how over the top it was, and honestly became more believable because of it.

The biggest criticism I have heard about GOTG is that it has a very two-dimensional villain. I agree, considering he never really was fleshed out in the movie other than being a religious fanatic, however, it was nice to see an actual villain that was a threat to the heroes of the movie. He was clearly the superior being, and even more so in the latter parts of the movie. It was just a nice change of pace to not say to myself the entire movie, "Why doesn't one of the good guys just go kick his ass?".

All around this is, in my opinion, clearly the best Marvel movie made to date. Was curious on everyone else's opinions.

I can never manage to choose between Guardians of the Galaxy, the original Iron Man, and The Avengers.

I'm a big fan of the Marvel movies and it's hard to pick a favourite but 1 of the things I thought after watching Guardians was that if I was a present day kid and watched it, it would be my Star Wars (original).

I had a very similar thought....too bad we had to get the prequels instead of something like this

Honestly, Captain America 2 is probably my favourite, but i think both Avengers and Guardians were both great. Ilike the avengers because the character interactions and dialouge were very good and true to the characters, but with Guardians, i didn't know the characters, so i feel it gave me more freedom to just enjoy the film.

For me, Guardians narrowly beat Avengers for my number 2 MCU slot. They were very similar, but Guardians was a funner ride.

My number one spot goes to Winter Soldier. That movie was just fantastic. I can't wait to get it on bluray come September.

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed all the Marvel movies, so these criticisms are intended to be relatively minor.

I thought Cap 2 had a better story than Avengers, less potential plot holes (if you ever watch Screen Junkies' Honest Trailers, you'll know what I referring to). And Guardians did the Star Wars thing of having lots of weird looking aliens but not really explaining much about their history/culture etc which meant I was less invested in saving whatever that planet was called than I was with saving Earth.

So, my vote goes to Cap 2.

I think Guardians actually explained the Nova/Kree thing really well. They used to be in a big war, Kree are clearly a little more war oriented and Nova is a civil yet battle-ready nation (almost 18th century Britain/Europe-esque), I didn't quite catch which side the war favored but they eventually settled with a treaty, which Ronnan was outraged by, so he got help from the very powerful mercenary third party of Thanos. They even gave his "Accuser" title some work and used it to develop his character, though he ended up feeling generic in the end as the Guardians needed more development than he did, so he had to be a more static character in the latter half of the film.

I would definitely say Guardians did everything right, down to the details, and filled out that part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that had only been hinted at until now. I also loved Cap 2 and Thor 2, and I think the movies are heading in a better direction now that they have the resources they need.

My vote has to go to Winter Soldier as well. I feel they just hit that one out of the park.

That being said, I really enjoyed Guardians. Watching it, I really felt like this must have been how lots of people felt when seeing Star Wars for the first time in theaters back in 1977. You are kind of just thrust into this universe where there's a bunch of weird stuff that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it just runs with it and carries you along for the ride to the point that you don't care if some of the stuff doesn't make sense. It was just a blast all around.

I kind of like the way they show aliens. Instead of forced explanations of different races that seems out of place since everyone in the movie would've already known.

Split between Guardians, Avengers and Winter Soldier. I don't see how they'll follow these up with a new franchise (Ant-Man, Dr Strange etc)

I'm surprised by how many people are choosing Winder Soldier, I actually preferred the first Captain America. The second one felt like Agents of Shield featuring Captain America and The Black Widow.

I loved GOTG but I think The Avengers still wins out for me.
I'll have to watch the former again to have a better opinion though, see how it holds up second time around.

Drax is awesome.

Personally I think Captain America 2 is the best, based on my personal preference for it's themes and content, even though Guardians and Avengers are all fantastic. I'd have them in ascending order: Avengers, Guardians, Captain 2. My personal top 3.

While I love the Avengers and Joss Whedon both, I can't say the movie is my favorite because of Joss Whedon. The movie is a little too much of his usual style, and the affectations and contrivances, mostly of speech setting itself up for jokes (in that regard he reminds me of a much, much better version of Jeff Dunham), wears thin. Guardians of the Galaxy has better humor...but it also has worse character development--the movie seems to favor the "tell, don't show" approach--so I guess call that a draw.

Hm. Of the Marvel studio films, I guess I gotta go with Captain America: the Winter Soldier. Good character development, great action, and they manage the paradox of an endlessly optimistic man working within a deliberately cynical world.

They're different beasts, and Guardians has the advantage of living in a post-Avengers universe where the general public are more open to the idea that superhero films can actually be good in their own right. I think my favourite Marvel film is probably the first Thor simply because it's nice, straightforward and fun, but it's also quite flawed and I don't think it's 'the best'. I'd say probably Avengers, Guardians and Captain America: The Winter Soldier are all up there though.

The Winter Soldier is by far my favourite. Killer performances across the board, fantastic action sequences, a great script and some excellent new additions to the MCU (Falcon, Winter Soldier etc). It not only is a great comic book film, it is the best action/espionage film I've seen in recent memory (far better than Skyfall and even Casino Royale).

How could you do this to me?

OT: Loved Avengers, but GotG is just everything I want in a movie, it's basically Daystar's favourite movie, The Movie.

I didn't saw the Guardians, but if I have to choose I will say Ironman 3.
Yes, yes, I can hear the screams of the hate about this movie, but I LOVE the plot twist.
