I came in here to post, "There's only one return, and it ain't of the King, it's of The Jedi." but you shot down right in the opening post.

Goddamn it.

Anyway, Star Wars.

If it has to be a movie trilogy then I suppose Star Wars, but they were both very good.
I would vote for 'Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy' as THE trilogy if i can include books.
What about the other two books?
... There are five books in 'The Hictchhickers Guide to the Galaxy' trilogy.
or, as it's more commonly known, the trilogy of four.
Trilogy of Five you fool!
It's collectively referred to as the trilogy of four. there are five books in the trilogy of four. everybody knows that, duh.
Denied! I have in the cover of my HHGTTG as "The first part of the trilogy of 5!"

Furthermore!

I was thinking while ago, because my friend refferd to the Lord of the Rings trilogy as "The Trilogy" which sent my other friend onto a rage shouting "There is only one trilogy, and only one return, and that's not "Of The King" it's "Of The Jedi" you idiot" (obviously just watched Clerks 2). But it got me thinking, what do you concider to be "The Trilogy"
Trilogy is just a word that describes a three part series right? I thought Star Wars has six parts?

There is no "the trilogy" the star wars trilogy is just that. The star wars prequal trilogy is just that. Same with every other trilogy.
Yeah, that's far too logical for this kind of conversation. I'll just join the spanner-throwing.

Terry Gilliam's "Trilogy of Imagination" films ("Time Bandits", "Brazil", and "The Advntures of Baron Munchausen". If you've never seen those, go see them. NOW.).
Steady now, I'm with you on Brazil and the Baron, but Time Bandits was pretty awful. :3

How about Aliens?
Yeah, for trilogies-that-aren't-trilogies, I could go along with Aliens. :D

Nope, no 'the' trilogy for me. If people started talking about 'the' trilogy and expected me to understand, I'd be way confused.

Yeah, a trilogy in five parts. It's the book that gives a whole new meaning to the word 'trilogy.'
Reminds me of something. Don't remember if it was a game, book, or movie. The tag line was "The fourth and final [media type] of the trilogy." I really wish I could remember what it was...
I remember seeing a book series bound together with rubber bands at a used book store in coastal Alabama 13 years ago, the Vampire Diaries Trilogy. The fourth one was tagged with "The fourth book of the Vampire Diaries Trilogy."

It might have been that.

I probably should have picked up on that sooner. I was just assuming that you didn't like the last 2 books.

I'm not going to read through 5 pages just so I can see if this has been said:

The Lord of the Rings isn't a Trilogy, it is one book divided into three parts, and the film is supposedly the same. Sure you can buy them separately, but they are all one story.

And technically there are six "books" with each of the parts divided into two.

I'm going to go star wars (original), would've said the Godfather but I wasn't a huge fan of part 3it just couldn't compete with the first 2

Isn't that what a Trilogy is though, would you say that The Matrix films where a single film and a Duology because there is a time skip.

Straight out of a dictionary: "Trilogy: A collection of three mediums in one. A three-part series"

if you put in the rest of my quote you would see this

...and before its said, yes i do realise that Star Wars is actualy 6 films but the first/latest three dont realy count as part of the original Star Wars plot, so for me the first/latest three are a competly differnt film.

is that even a question? LoTR Trilogy= Uninteresting Light show. Star Wars= Epic journey of discovery.
Define Uninteresting Light show.
LoTRs is all visual effects first and human story second. Star Wars mixes special effects and human stories at the same time.

The Godfather one.
The later ones, in my opinion, don't stand up to the first.

Fixed

It's decided then, all movies that have three parts will duel to the death Highlander style.
Aha! I like your style. Off with The Lord of the Rings head.
Actually, I just realized that the fixing put an unintentional joke in there. It now looks like your friend has become enraged after seeing Clerks 2 and is violently denying its existence.
