If you go in thinking everything's going to fail there are two possible outcomes:
1) It fails, you are right. You get to bask in the knowledge you were right all along.
2) It goes right, pleasant surprise, you lose nothing.

There's less disappointment if you only expect the worst.

I'm a pessimist. The way I see it, if you are always expecting the worst, then if things go well, you are pleasantly surprised, but if it doesn't go as planned, you are ready for it. If you are expecting the best and things go pear-shaped, then you get hit by the double-whammy of a failed plan and the disappointment of life not matching your expectations.

Neither. I generally take every random variable to have an equal chance of assuming a positive or negative value... But then again, since I always make backup plans in case everything goes haywire, I guess I veer towards pessimism.
