It's seems as if recently someone from the film industry has picked up the latest folio of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work and decided that there needs to be visual representation of it all at the same time. With the latest Sherlock Holmes film out in theaters, the next season of Sherlock coming out in the UK on New Year's Day, and with House in the middle of its 8th season (wow, is it really 8?), what does everyone prefer?

Note: "Other" is a category since I'm not on the pulse of a lot of television shows outside of the USA, and since House is a option, I'll have "Other" represent other "Sherlock-like" characters that aren't represented in the first three options.

I'm going to go with the BBC version on this one. As much as I like Hugh Laurie, House tends to wear a little thin, while the BBC manages to blend the more arrogant aspects of the character into something a bit more palatable.

BBC. The movies are okay, but I don't think of them as SH movies in anything but name, and I'm not a huge House fan. I'd watch it if it was on.

I'm not certain if I'm supposed to tip my hand in anyway for my own poll, but I'll give into the temptation and agree with BBC. The movies transfer Sherlock's persona into other skills that weren't greatly connected to Sherlock before (e.g. slow motion slapping), so I've passed up on them. House used to be one of my favorite shows, but I believed that it peaked at the end of Season 4 (with the House's Head/Wilson's heart episodes) and hasn't been as good since. Also, the BBC version did something that I never thought anyone could do, and that was make Sherlock modern and good.

My hand is tipped. Any other thoughts, Escapist colleagues?

I prefer Jeremy Brett in the Granada series, but since that's not an option I'll go with Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC series.

Does Basil from the Great Mouse Detective count? No? Then fine, the BBC "Sherlock" for sure. Really one of the best interpretations of the character there's ever been. Also, Stephen Moffat's involvement is a plus.

I really liked the BBC sherlock, though if that weren't there I'd probably go with Dr. House.

I haven't watched any of them. I just wanted to say Benedict Cumberbatch is the best name ever.

I'm going with House. I've never seen the BBC mini-series but wasn't a fan of the movies, so House by default. I was never much of a Holmes fan to begin with though.

BBC's Sherlock was fantastic, especially the first episode. Sherlock season 2 is probably one of only two things I'm looking forward to for 2012.

Anyway, I'm going to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie this holiday, but I'm not expecting too much.

It's over dramatized in the movies, I´ll give you that. But in all fairness, Conan Doyle described Sherlock as a bare-knuckle fighter with training in some form of jiu-jitsu.

Anyways. I still have to take a look at the BBC revamp. Seems like a good show. But from what I know, I´d have to go with House. I feel it´s more inspired by than a re-imagining, but I adore the arrogance, humour and social retardation that Laurie portrays.

And he's one of the best English actors at portraying an American that I've ever seen.

I'll admit that I haven't actually seen the new Holmes films, but from what I have, I hear they're quite good, but BBC's Sherlock is better, and I'm inclined in my inexperienced opinion to agree.
I really love Martin Freeman's portrayal of John, and I think Steven Moffat has done extremely well writing it with Mark Gatiss. Overall, I think it really captures the essence of Doyle's characters in the updated situation of modern day London.

Wow, that's hard. But I voted for the BBC version. It's just fantastic and everyone who has missed out should definately go watch it. 'House' comes in a very, VERY close second.

Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch actually.

It's a little bit Aerith and Bob [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AerithAndBob], Martin John Freeman appearing alongside Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch

House is the most iconic representation of Sherlock Holmes, without actually being Sherlock Holmes.

The movies portray Sherlock Holmes as a gunslinging, karate-kicking, detective. While I like the movies, they went a bit over the top.

The BBC series, out of those. As much as I liked the first movie (haven't seen the second one), it's been harder to think of it as 'Sherlock Holmes', and not 'Victorian England action hero with a catchy, familiar name.' I know that House is based on Artie's character, but I think that he's gone for long enough that he's a character in his own right.
I enjoyed Rupert Everett's portrayal of the character, though I felt the Watson was a little weak (not an uncommon flaw).

The greatest of course (though not necessarily recent), would have to be 'Basil; The great mouse detective'
You know it's true.

Right on the money with Jeremy Brett, he just *was* Holmes. I'm not too keen on most interpretations and I don't think House actually bears that much resemblance to the character.

I like the first Sherlock Holmes movie, haven't seen the latest. Mainly because Jude Law is a fantastic (and competent) Watson after years of him being portrayed as a bumbling oaf.
