When given a choice in games such as Mass Effect, WoW, etc, as which sex do you prefer to play? I know many males hate playing as female characters, but at the same time, many prefer to play as females, because they'd rather watch a woman's ass jiggling as they run, rather than a man's. However, I rarely hear of women playing as male characters. I'm curious to see what the results will be.

Also, feel free to add the reasons behind your decision (especially if it's something other than just 'I play girls because I'm a girl'.

I'm female, and I play female characters. I suppose I'm boring.

How about you, Escapists?

My friend uses that same excuse :p
Normally, as a guy, I play male characters.

Possible exceptions being when females get exclusive items or something like that.

I'm a guy and I always play female character... I don't really know why. It makes things more interesting for some reason.

My hormones told me to go female in Mass Effect. I went female in Borderlands because of the Phasewalk thingy. I guess I just mix it up...

Always the same sex (male). Being the member of the opposite sex cut the immersion factor by quite a bit for me.

Depends on the game. For example, if I've played one runthrough as a male, I'll probably play the second as a female. Mostly because sometimes there are differences in the ways characters interact with different sexes. For example, in Deus Ex: Invisible War[i/], the jet pilot will flirt with you a bit and give you a lower transport cost than if you were male.

Fallout 3
Oblivion
Dragon age

mass effect
APB beta
Guildwars

I don't think its that important only a few games give you the choice anyway

It depends heavily on which game, what role, and which playthrough.

For instance, on Dragon Age: Origins, I played my first playthrough as Male Dwarf Noble, second as Female City Elf, third as Male Mage, fourth as Female Human Noble (for the Queen ending).

As a general rule I'll play male on my main or first character and then try female on an alt or secondary character. I really don't care TBH, but it's fun to play once from both sides.

In most singleplayer RPGs my characters tend to split roughly 50:50 between male and female. Though in both Mass Effect games, 75% of the time I've played as a female Shepard because of the superior voice acting. Jennifer Hale for the win.

[small]That and the fact that it's nice to play as a strong, non-sexualised female lead for a change instead of "Grizzled Male Space Marine #53623".[/small]

I searched and found a thread which simply asked if people preferred male or female, with no separation of the player's sex, and no option for middle ground. Therefore, I found it acceptable to form a thread to explore the topic in greater detail.

Well, I usually vary to see how things differ from time to time, but when it comes to most, I usually play the opposite sex (and I'm Male). The reason for this was because I like watching characters react to how a female kick their ass. But really it's mostly that whenever I start out a particular gender, I usually stick to that gender and play it over and over again.

I will admit that it's lead to a few WTFs by others, I've had many people suddenly say "I thoughts you were a gal!!" and such, maybe it's the name? :p

Usually male, I can better relate to males, being male and all. ahem.
But after one walkthrough I usually try playing once as a female, too, if only for the boobies.

Damn, clicked the wrong button in the poll. That's what I get for trying to multitask. Anyway, I'm female but I usually play as a male. In the beginning, I think it was mostly because very few games gave you a choice, and I got used to it. Then, when games like Baldur's Gate came around, the male characters got better romance storylines than the female ones, so I still played male. Nowadays things have improved a lot for female characters, but I still play male most of the time as a force of habit.
