Usually, if given a choice I would pick a female character (I?m a guy). Maybe its just me but most male video game characters on offer fall into the generic muscle man category and lets face it are about as interesting as a plank of wood. Gears of War I?m looking at you! However I would pick a male lead if they where well characterized or had a defining quality, otherwise I just pass them by.

i play both regularly, mostly because in "good" RPGs the interactions change rather extremely wether you play male or female. also, i liked running around in oblivion as a bloke when everybody referred to me as "the heroine of kvatch" (one of the funnier german localization errors :D believe me, there's MUCH worse)

well in fallout3 i made my character a girl, because as my friend told me, if ur going to be staring at somones ass for several hours, it might as well be female.
Also, Black Widow is better than Lady Killer. (More male baddies.)

For me it depends on the game. If it's an RPG like Dragon age, Mass Effect, Oblivion I usually play as a guy first (eventually I do make a female character). If it's an RPG that has no Plot or the story is a side thing (Torchlight, WoW, FATE) then I usually like playing as a chick, Hey gotta have something pretty to look at while grinding for exp.

I'd have no problem making female characters, and in a few games I do, but what holds me back is that more often than not the female characters are the sluttiest whores ever with armor (example Male armor: 2 inch thick plate with spikes all over it and the rest looking generally badass. Female armor: Panties and Bra.) If female armor looked cool instead of very very trampy, I'd make female characters more often, but as it stands, as long as tauren trapper pants exist (WoW armor piece that practically don't exist if worn on a character) they will be avoided.

I'm a guy, I generally play male characters, mainly since it's just easier to roleplay a guy when you y'know... ARE one... unless i really wanna mess with someone's head then i might play a female character... only ever done that like... 2-3 times though... and considering the number of games I've played... over the last 20 years or so of gaming... yeah...

If a game offers the choice then I make sure to give both sexes a go just to make sure I'm getting the complete experience.
I've noticed that in Mass Effect that there are sections in both games where the voice actor for male Shepard may deliver a line better than the female Shepard and vice versa.

There is also a small bit of novelty in "heh, I've got boobies." Not a lot. But a little. There is still a small cluster of neurons in my brain that function exclusively at the 5th grade level.

As a male, I typically play female characters. If I'm going to play a game where I have to look at an ass all day, I'd make sure it was a nice one.

Depending on the game I as a male (I.e RPG adventure/sandbox) I would first play as a felmale which the character's image will be moulded in to a badass (military personal like or punk depends on the game setting)

It depends on the game, and other factors.

I would never create a female Tauren, Troll, Draenei, Orc or a male Human, Blood Elf, Night Elf and Gnome in WoW.(all for their emotes and how they walk, gnome for the idiotic hairstyles)

In Mass Effect I never play a male Shepard because of Jennifer Hale [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0354937/]. I mean, the choice of Voice Actor is Samus, Bastila Shan, Naomi Hunter or Male Shepard.(and I would have preferred Tim Curry [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000347/] over Mark Meer [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1035752/] as Male Shepard)

Most other games I play don't have talking protagonists, so I can't pick male/female based on voice actor but then it depends on how the equipment/character looks. I refuse to run around with a (fe)male character 'dressed' in a few strips of gauze and clothing has to look great or awesome. Some female characters still look like they're dressed in the amount of metal to create four or five tin cans, but damn if they're not the most awesome looking tin cans ever made.

Depends on a variety of things which gender I fancy more. Usually I will opt to choose both over frequent playthroughs to unlock every possible dialogue option available in the game or to explore the different love interests, should the game allow for such. Another reason may be if I have created a story for a specific character, then I choose whichever gender better suits the personality. Character design is another factor upon my decision, for example in most Pokemon games I choose the female trainer for the sole reason of disliking the male trainer's character design.

The majority of times I play male however for MMOs, where the aforementioned "create a story" comes into practice, I frequently play as a girl. Outside of video games on online roleplaying websites, 80-90% of my characters are female. Perplexing as it may be, I have difficulty maintaining a muse with male characters when writing, whereas such is a rarity for female characters. Always derive amusement playing the badass, independant girl; if she had a tormented pass, all the better.

Edit: Voice acting can factor in my decision as well, although I am hardly as picky about VA quality in comparison to most gamers.

Same sex, and I'm female. Makes the game more immersive IMO, except when they make those damned gasps and grunts when they get hurt. Christ, it's like cheap porn.

Usually guy( usually as in most of the time), because in games where you can define your sex, you can usually also make choices (meaning they are RPGs).
And I can't really feel like RPGing with a female character for some reason.
