I chose the bottom option, but it's not really random. Ever since Jedi Academy, when I could choose not only gender but morality, I've often replayed, and almost universally play male good guys, and female bad guys. My Fem Shepard is pretty vicious and self serving, but Man Shepard is open and forgiving. Fable 2, my male character was a symbol of goodness, but the little girl I played grew to become a murderer and a vandal. I'm not sure why, but that's how I roll.

Will almost always choose male (my sex), but for some reason I tend to like the females in fighting games.. No reason really, they just usually better fit my playstlye.

I vary the gender of my character based on a lot of things - how the voicework pans out, what feels more natural for the role, and the conceptualisation of the character in my head. Mostly this resolves to female because that's what I find easier to work with, but a lot of characters I have in tabletop RPGs are male, a lot in Warcraft are female - I can't run Mass Effect without a female Shepard because a male one feels totally wrong, in Dragon Age I mix it up but there's a female bias, mainly because I cannot make anything from Dragon Ages character creator that is both male and does -not- look like a joke. Also a reason I often play female characters is because I absolutely love the concept of the lithe, agile Zweihander wielding death storm, which is often best emphasised in a female character, but a male elf could also pull it off easily. You know, if I didn't hate elves, the sellouts.

I'm a guy and I usually play as a female character when given the choice, mainly because when you are given a male character as the only playable hero, I rarely care about them or form any sort of attachment to them. They're almost always soooooo generic, two-dimensional and boring (e.g. Master Chief, Marcus Phoenix and especially the default male Shepard character), whereas if I pick or create a female protagonist, I find myself less willing to throw myself out into a hail of bullets and think more about the welfare of the character. Sounds a bit silly, but there ya go =)

i play female cos some games forget that girls play and the scenario turns manly. character interaction sometimes has a few laughs in when you play as a girl. very rare but ignorance has occured in the past.

I'm male and I usually play as a female in single player games. As Shamus put it eloquently, if I'm going to be staring at an ass for 90% of the time it might as well be female.

Male, usually play male.

The only exceptions i'd put to this are:

1) MMO's, and all the male characters are fugly or creepily androgynous, in which case the length of time you have to deal with such character has it's weight (never done it though, only considered it a couple of times).

2) RPG's that allow for multiple playthroughs, and in which there are story/gameplay differences when it comes to gender, like most of Bioware's. (done so in DAO)

I guess i depends a lot on whether people tend to roleplay, and as such see the character they play with as "themselves" (and this does *not* always mean they will play as their own gender, there are psychological forces at play here), or if they have a detachment from that type of immersion, and tend to see their characters as their own *aham* personal harem, or something like that. :p And of course, all varying shades in between those 2 extremes.

In Champions Online,WoW,and currently Aion i made a male character only to get sick of the sight of him, because the games weren't giving me the feeling that way my person depicted into that world,so i pretend i am watching the story of a hot female mage or superhero or whatever and it's awesome

That and eye-candy.

*EDIT* I just realized the true reason,it's because close to all the females I know in real life are horrible and I try to make one that is kick ass.

Depends on the game.

In RPGs its usually male, i have it easier to get into the role that way.

In all other games, female. Why? Lets just say i like the view...

As long as it's single player, I always build female characters. I mean, if I'm going to stare at someone's butt for 48 hours, it should be a sexy ass.

My hormones told me to go female in Mass Effect. I went female in Borderlands because of the Phasewalk thingy. I guess I just mix it up...
Same Lilith in borderlands was awesome.

I'm female and I always play as a female.

However, I rarely hear of women playing as male characters. I'm curious to see what the results will be.
From the poll results that seems true. I don't really see the point of playing a male character as a female really... I mean it isn't like there aren't other male characters to look at if it's the whole "eye candy" or whatever thing people want.

Then again maybe females could play as males to experience how people treat male characters or something - but I can't imagine how that would be any different to the experience of playing a female character.

I usually play as a woman,and I'm a guy.
I have a very stupid logic that makes no sense whatsoever as to why I do it but here goes.
<quote=My stupidity in work>I usually play as a female character to heighten the feeling of escapism.Seeing as how I play games for fun AND escapism,I should do everything to make me feel like that I am in an entirely different universe.Where all males turn female, and some females turn male.
That and the fact that seeing a woman kill tons of dudes is just so much cooler, instead of the generic action hero guy.
Also I dislike most male voice actors.

Really depends on the game. I have tried playing both in games such as fallout 3. How ever, I do mainly play as males because in the past I have been called a fag for playing a girl XD, which doesn't even make sense. Just your average sexist retards for you
