Anyways OT, most of the time I'll play as a guy in games where I can fully customise my char, since well the obvious part of being a guy and I like to base my characters on myself whenever possible which now seems like I'm quite for up my own ass but still. Though I'll gladly play a female character in games if the options there, E.G Diablo 2 or Baldurs Gate. I think the only other time I've decided to play as a femal was years ago on runescape when I wanted guys to go out with me and give me free stuff, I got a fair bit of gold that way.
Now, I've got a mate like you, every character in a RPG he makes always look as close to him as possible, I asked him & he just shrugged so I was wondering if you might be able to help me with my quibble, as for I find it easier to play an RPG with somthing that looks nothing like me.

Oh and everyone has to atleast do the female city elf origin once, I laughed my head off the first time n when I told my mates, they found it hilarious to, nothing beats a good 'ol kidnap.

I usually play female characters unless they are dwarfs I dunno just seems wrong to play a female dwarf. If I am playing pen and paper game I always play a dude.
Actually, my first Dragon Age character was a dwarf whom I modeled after my girlfriend (she's short). The character turned out really hot. Mmm...getting hot and heavy w/ Liliana.

But all kidding aside, I prefer playing female because playing the macho, totally awesome guy who saves the world is just too much like real life for me. And games are the best way to play at being a woman without having to put on pantyhose.

I actually always use my girlfriend as a model for my characters. Kinda makes it more ironic when I ignore her because my brain has been sucked into the rpg. But at the same time, since I'm no artist, character design is the best means I have of drawing her.
sooo romantic.

That's it right there pretty much.

That's why I said it depends. If it's a first person game, it doesn't really matter but if it's third person and I have a choice, I'll go with the opposite (female) sex.

Both sexes.

I am male and I play D&D. I always use my characters and supporting cast from my campaign when I play MMOs online, and also on console games.

Cee Qanguel is a LV16 wizard, and I've played him for so long that whenever there is a "glass-cannon" type of class, the character's name will be Cee Qanguel, preferably a human-like male.
I always pictured my character a human male. (Sue me for lack of imagination

On the other hand, I will name any healer type "Antoneya", my old elf female cleric of Lathander.

For games from a third person perspective it's usually females, with some exceptions like KOTOR. The female characters plus their armour is just nicer to look at mostly, unless of course the character designs for the male characters are quite interesting.
However in first person games it'll almost always be male.

In Saints row 2, I made a female character. Whoa she made me horny, made her run around with only pants and a bra :D

I'll almost always play a male character but sometime I will roll a female. It just depends on the game. Like in Mass Effect I have a female Shepard purely because I couldn't get the look right and all the pre-sets were crap so I just chose a female pre-set that was decent and went with that.

EDIT: I'll also sometimes play a female on a second play through. Like in Fallout 3 or Saints Row 2 - Just for the crack really. I tend to make them the exact opposite to my first character,

Choice is rare, so I usualy endy up playing female if I can and If the female character design doesnt look so rediculous, but I think I enjoy playing male just as much. Espeialy Prince of Persia. I spent a good bit of time in the begining of Two Thrones just making the prince go up and down poles ;D

I agree with you on the first part, but not for the second. I find it perfectly acceptable since what you're given in life is what you have for life. So it's alright to be what you're not in a game.

Depends on a lot of factors: Impact on the story, voice actors, perks you might or might not get, party members you might or might not get, the view (3rd person ^^) or just the way I feel that day.

(Playing Fallout 3 as female at the mo'.)

Considering the fact that I pretty much make the characters to my likeness (I can become a hero of the wasteland, a spectre in space and a man of medieval times all in a days work) I play as a bloke most of the time. The only time I've played as a woman was back in my days on WoW and I figured that the female blood elf was better suited for the role of a rogue rather than a male who looks like a mix between a body builder and Spock.

I guess it depends on the game. But since genderoption is most common in rpgs I often play as the oposite gender for the freedom of developing a role that is completely unrelated to me. When I play as my own gender it just feels like the role is an avatar of me instead of a free role as I end up taking much of the same choices I would if the choice was up to the real me.

Why? Personally I'd find it boring to roleplay a male all the time purely on the tackle I've got down stairs and the lack of tatybijangles up stairs, my mind is very experimental, so I like to explore the different avenues of life.

I usually play the same sex (male) but not always. I don't know why I sometimes play as the opposite sex (or maybe I do *pant, drool and gurgle*), hopefully someone has an explanation or thoughts on this.

I'm a guy and for me it really depends on the game. If I'm playing something like WoW, AoC or Monster Hunter I'd go female simply 'cause watching a chick kick ass is awesome.

If I'm playing a tabletop rpg however like DnD where I might actually role-play it feels awkward to play as a female and thus I always play a male. Besides, even if the female minis do look awesome trying to watch it kick a kobolds ass is kind of futile... since the dice do all the work.

Oh and one last thing, for games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age or other games with romance subplots I usually go with a male character. Hitting on my male party members does not give me the same kind of satisfaction as it did hitting on Morrgan or Miranda... gee I wonder why? :p

It really depends on the game. Usually, I'll pick a male character, but when I have a choice between a muscly grisly faced guy, a muscly bald guy or, just to mix things up, a muscly grisly faced bald guy, I'll pick a chick. Games where gender and class or stats are connected also tend to have me playing a female since the fast light characters tend to be female.

Women are more beautiful. And of course, a girl who kicks people's @$$es is much cooler than a guy who does so.

When it come to third person rpgs the simple fact remains... which rear end would i prefer to stare at during the entire game, and thus in many of these I end up a female character. But if I'm not having the camera focused on the behind I'll be male.
