I'm male and I recently I've started to prefer playing female. I don't know exactly what it is that intrigues me about it, it's not the looks, maybe it's just interesting to play as someone different than yourself and because males are more violent by nature, it's somewhat of a peculiarity to be a violent woman.

nah women fight too

I'm male.

While normally I'd consider the gender of the characters I use irrelevant, I far prefer to use male characters online because most of the time it prevents me from getting creepy messages from certain players in games. Although since I'm not that into online gaming anymore, that's not so much of a problem now.

When it comes to a choice like that in other games, I don't really care that much. I'll pick male in role play games, just because it helps with immersion, but other then that I'll just pick whatever I feel like picking.

Of course, when talking about qualities of certain types of people (in this case women), it's always a matter of statistical tendencies, not of general statements that apply to all individuals of said group.
If I want to play as a character who is reluctant to use violence but is forced to due to circumstances, it's easier to imagine a female character into that role.
On the other hand, it's also interesting to play as a power hungry and violent female because it is against the tendencies of women in general.

I'm male.

For me it depends on the game. If there's a detailed character creator such as in Bethesdas later games, I tend to play female. Mostly because it's more fun trying to create a woman than a man. If there's not, I tend to play male. In City of Heroes I play whatever fits the concept the best; man, woman or huge. In fighting games I play women, because they're always fast.

I play a female character most of the time (I'm male).

I think there is one outstanding reason for this, though it kinda comes in two parts.

Most of the games where you can choose gender, I play the characters a lot like characters from books that I write, and I often write female protagonists.

Part two is that my first proper game was Tomb Raider III, and my second proper game was TRII, so I've been basically raised on a diet of strong female protagonists.

Also, whenever Jennifer Hale is an option, I play her of course.

Why? Personally I'd find it boring to roleplay a male all the time purely on the tackle I've got down stairs and the lack of tatybijangles up stairs, my mind is very experimental, so I like to explore the different avenues of life.
I just find it strange and wrong when men play as female characters especially in M.M.O.R.P.G's where real-life is simulated better (world of warcraft) in terms of the movement of people. I think you should be able to interact with other characters knowing at least what gender they are.

I play male characters 98% of the time, being male myself. The only deviation (pun not intended) to this habit came when deciding who to use in Street Fighter IV as I found the game devoid of interesting male characters with Balrog (Claw) being the exception. Ended up with Crimson Viper and Juri.

Same gender first time through, though I'll play the other one on a second playthrough for completionism's sake

Really? To me it seems it shouldn't matter whether I know what gender someone is because it wouldn't (or at least shouldn't) affect how I react to them.
In most of these threads, you have no idea what anyones gender is, how is that any different than on an MMO.

It all depends on the game / class. I'm a guy but I play as Lilith on Borderlands, back when I played WoW I had a male tauren shaman but a female blood elf pally. Now that i'm playing DDO however I play a male drow pally, and a female human monk. Just depends on what I personally think would fit better I guess. So long answer short, depends.

i play both as a male and dont feel weird at all. It also depends on the race you choose. For example Tauren and Orc females are gross. While female humans and night elves are nice to look at.

I know many males hate playing as female characters, but at the same time, many prefer to play as females, because they'd rather watch a woman's ass jiggling as they run, rather than a man's.
True, the visual motive is strong in many people. Although, the way that females run in Dragon Age is very... off putting. I don't know anybody, female or male, who runs like they've got a stick for a spine.

I'm a guy, and usually play as a man (named Jacob Khall) the first time I play the game, so that I can relate more easily.

After that I play as a female (usually named Mara) just because I can, and it keeps the game interesting and different.

I play whatever character design I like more, which is usually the female one. I only play a different gender on a few games where all the girls look like sluts or are just plain ugly, also if I'm not given a choice. I don't mind playing a guy as long as he doesn't resemble a shaven grizzly bear.

If the game is good I will play both sexes but I tend to be male for my first playthrough act like myself in the games as best as I can then see all the oppossing consequences as a female.

PS im male

It depends, really. I always play a female Shepherd in the mass effect games, for example, because the voice acting is better. I'm also more used to a female Shepherd than a male one, so it's the default gender for the character in my own mind. I tend to alternate when it comes to games like fallout, but my best character is female.

Come to think of it, I sort of prefer female characters where optional. I'm not sure why. Reaction to all the male protagonists, maybe? Socially, I find women more likeable than men. Very generally, of course.

Male so it's easier to roleplay/background the character for me. . .

Of course, if "Robot" or something is an option for what to play, that trumps Male or Female.
