Ultimately... do whatever the hell you like, provided you've got the money for it.

Personally, you've got enough by way of marines to be able to proxy virtually any model and while the model design has changed, most players will just melt with nostalgia when you crack them out. So do a dual project of building an army list of new marines (with or without character, up to you) using your DA's (who have been completely nerfed, which annoyed me to no end when 5th Ed came out) just with the new rules. Just repaint and give them a battle-damaged look, 'cos that's never a bad idea.

As for a new army, I'm with Vidi Kitty on this, go for Guard. They're easy to paint for the most part, have a vastly different playstyle so it's something new and go nuts with the tanks.

Personal recommendation would be: Eldar, but doesn't look as though you'd like them. *shrug*

Enjoy!
I still have a few boxes of DA's to get from the attic ( After I've stopped sneezing... ) So I'll have a look through them. I haven't really read the rules since the 2nd Ed, so not sure what they've done to it now.

Hmmm, Guard. I wouldn't know how to play them! I mainly use my marines to set up crossfires and blanket the enemy in fire and then assault them. Whilst stopping their heavy units from advancing ( Devastators ftw? .

I'll have a look into the Imps Codex later, see what I can find out!

What the Turpster said, Nekrons are the way to go.

They're just so awesome.
Blah, I hate Necrons. They just seem so dull. I'm not sure about their rules, but I don't think they'd be the kind of army I'd enjoy playing!
Necrons are apparently going to have a Codex update soon, and about time to I also heard with this rumour that the C'tan might get nerfed or removed and that Matt Ward is lead writer for it (which imho means it's either going to be horrifically over powered or Under powered.) but I can't back that up with hard facts.

Gaurd can be fun but don't forget to do your Orders if you play them.

(Also remember everyone is going to name an army with bias based on the people they played with them as to if they are any good or fun as that also depends on the player, why not go into a local GW and have a look through some Codex's find a backstory and army you like and go with it?)

OH! If you do choose tau, don't stick to the same colors. Sure a army with the same paintjob looks good, but the friend of mine who has tau has 9 stealth suits, each of which is a different bright color. Orange, green, pink, blue, silver, so on. They all have the same sept mark on them, but the armor color its self is all its own and it looks really good on the field once you get over it being a little silly.

get new sisters codex when it comes out. been playing the WD editions so far and ended up with an army that could shoot up to 38 melta shots in one round of fire if everything went perfectly.

I heard about that, Necron players have been waiting for a while for the new codex. Hope it's worth it for you guys!

I'm open to any army, I just need to feel "attached" to it, to play them. ( No point playing an army you don't like )

I'll read through the Lexicanum later and pick up some back story on them.

Imperial Fists.

"Pain is...a lesson that the universe teaches us. Pain is the preserver from injury. Pain perpetuates our lives. It is the healing, purifying scalpel of our souls. Pain is the wine of communion with heroes. It is the quicksilver panacea for weakness - the quintessence of a dedicated existence. Pain is the philosophic vitriol which transmutes mere moral into immortal. It is the Sublime, the golden astral fire!"

Playing the game these days, you don't see a whole lot of archive models anymore. When my early edition Dark Angels Dreadnought hits the table, it comes out to gasps of nostalgia from other players. The problem is that the weapons are sometimes incompatible (we have to use house rules to allow for the Dread's plasma cannon arm). I recommend dusting off the old ones but caution you to watch out for changes and incompatibilities.

Well, as you'd expect, all the factions have their analogous units, but with the Guard, you have perhaps fifty guys laying down fire with lasguns, and if you mix and match the 'orders' that you take, you can get in an extra shot/re-rolls to hit (or wound, can't remember), you can throw a lot of dice in the shooting phase with those little guys. Their special characters are much more colourful as well (as well as the junior special squad leaders/tank commanders).

Also, with the Heavy Weapons teams, in many ways, they're better than Devs, 'cos you get more of them, they're cheaper, they can have indirect fire and they're much easier to cover. Sure you won't be able to assault and really get much damage in, but that's sort of the appeal of the Guard, damn they're not good for much, but they don't half try! Sort of like the British and sports in general! =P

Besides, the crossfire tactic you just mentioned is greeted with a total shitstorm by Blood Angels who just pounce on isolated units and have Death Company as bullet magnets (maybe that's unfair).

For now, definitely get the IG codex because there is seriously a lot of variation you can get out of it even in just 1000pts.

Well, if you're in the UK I can always post you a starter box? ;)

It's expensive, at first. Once you've got a decent army built it's more just buying bits and pieces here and there. As it is with many things, it's the starting out that hurts your wallet!

Sounds like they're definitely worth me looking at! I was just always put off of them by their general uselessness, but I can see the bonus of 40+dice rolled...one of them's gotta hit, right?

Ah, now with the guy playing the blood angels...He's new, so he's not going to bother me with too much yet. I may have also neglected to tell him some of the special rules for them...( I'm, a terrible person ).

I've never really played against the Blood angels, so I never really had to make a tactic to fit around them. I think that might be a flaw in my gameplan...

I'd say imperial guard, its fun to come up with a good strategy in which you win against a chaos army (the first guy I beat freaked the fuck out) or play a game where you are so surprised your section survived that close combat move. I also think it's great that you can encircle your enemy and slowly close in and he can't kill your men fast enough, but you the same so it becomes an orgy of hand to hand combat until one of your armies dies.

don't go with tau... i did amd it takes way too much luck to win... n after the first few turns once the armies meet for CC ur chances of a win just go down hill.

Nah man, you've got to get yourself some Nekrons.
I'm the third person to say this, for good reason - they're awesome. The Elite units are a little pricey money-wise, but they're lovely models with lovely weapons and lovely rules. Rumors are also abound that they're going to get some new units soon.

Some people have recommended Necrons, but I would hold off on them for a bit. They are rumored to be getting the next codex, so I'd wait and see how that turns out before buying them.

I say choose Tau because I have them :p I also have Imperial guard and I would say Tau are more about a few High powered shots that have a good chance to hit whereas Guards are just a case of SPAAAAMMMMMMM LAZZZOORRRSSS. As everyone knows that SPEHZ MARRIENEZZ all have epilepsy at least that seems to be the case in games i play Lasguns are amazing :p especially with the rapid fire order meaning 3 shots a turn at close range

Also if your worried about close combat as a Tau player you can tailor your army to avoid it by making them all mechanized so they can shoot then move away or use the tank as cover if need be

i would suggest 'nids simple (ish, ok not really) to paint, nice to build,
easily customisable, long and short range, etc etc.
i really like them.
