I'm curious as to the input of others on this matter. Creativity in games has largely flew out the window. Who do you blame for this, the game developers or the players? Please show your work.

I think the consumers are the ones to blame, why would you risk all that money to try and make something different when they'll buy something you already made if you repaint it.

The issue comes from both developers and consumers. Consumers have proven that we will buy crap games just as much, if not more, than quality. Developers are bound to exploit this to make more money by just putting out more of the same.

The man speaks the truth. Considering the vast majority of games do not get advertised beyond gaming sites etc. I don't think the media has much of a say really.

I blame developers for favoring eternal sequels over original ideas and consumers for shelling out money for eternal sequels.

I blame people like EA, although they said they're changing, and the people who buy the same sports-game every year, and stuff like that... Hope i didn't offend anyone.

Alittle from column A (the developers), alittle from column B (the customers)

I think it is the consumer. If no one bought horrid games, then developers would go out of thier way to make good games people will buy. Its simple supply and demand. Consumers keep buying shitty games, developers keep making them.

I blame the producers.. Producers are only interested in money while developers often only want to make great games.

It's a combined effort between the Developers, Publishers and us, the paying public.

Games cost a lot to make, so Publishers don't want to sink money into games that are not going to sell.
Developers by extension only propose games they think people are going to buy, otherwise the publishers don't invest in them.
The Public reinforces this by only buying the familiar.

Look no further than Okami, Killer 7 and Shadow of the Colossus for proof. Excellent games, poor sales.

I blame writers. In extent, writers are the ones who make up the game. After that the coders and other artists take over, but the writers are the main reason for shitty games.

I think it's all about taking chances.

The developers need to chances in making new and different things. Yes, making sequels and copycats can sell, and if you've got a big fan base, yeah pleasing them is important. But it takes some grit to start something new. Portal is a good recent example of innovation and originality.

But they're not alone in the blame. If consumers want originality, they should support up and coming developers, try new genres, give little-known games a chance. Hey, you might not like it now, but funding the young developers is important to getting something new going. Just look at how Bungie got it's start (of course, they've become a cliche to some).

I'm optimistic about the future of gaming, so I think we'll see some new things coming down the pipe. :)

I don't see the problem. Sure, you get a lot of sequels, but there's good original stuff coming out too, like, say, Prototype, Alpha Protocol, Heavy Rain, etc.

Joined in 2006 with 40 posts? Quiet a long break you had.

I blame publishers. I am sure developers would do more if publishers were not playing it safe so much with the money.
