Recently while watching TV, a Watchmen commercial came on, leading me to become excited, waving my hands in the air like a schoolgirl. My sister, three years my junior, quickly changed the channel to TMZ, a celebrity-gossip show. I protested quickly and loudly, complaining that these people have no lives; anyone who dedicates themselves to finding every last detail about someone else isn't truly living.
She shot back with the comment that hardcore gamers, WoW players specifically, have less of a life, since they are obsessed with something that "doesn't even exist".

My question to you, Escapist population, is who living a worse life?

My argument is that celebrity fanatics aren't doing anything for themselves. They care so much about actors and singers that they fail to see what's around them. While gamers are generally not the most productive in terms of physical or mental labor, at least they can crank numbers like no other, have created (almost) a new language, and dedicate themselves to self-improvement, albeit virtual self-improvement. It's the thought that counts, though, and I think the elite of WoW are getting more out of life than any given teen who can rattle off facts about Britney Spears or whomever.

Yes, I will concede that gossip makes up only a percentage of one's character.

Celebrity fanatics, with hardcore MMOers, at least they are doing something that has a reward and gain instead of pseudo-stalking some asshole.

You're onto a kinda one sided debate here, considering the forum.

But either way, we spend hours of our lives entertaining ourselves via digital means, and getting nothing from it but the... actually, why we game is another discussion altogether. but regardless of your reasons you are simply wasting time.

with the celebrity obsessed it's the feeling that they are the people that are rich and famous for whatever they do, the unofficial world leaders in their field of acting or standing in front of a camera. and if they weren't interesting then they would vanish off the face of the earth.

now don't get me wrong, i don't care who's put on weight or who's sleeping with who. but it's no less of a waste of time, ergo, no worse a life.

People have died sitting in their chairs playing WoW, MMO's win this easily.
Haven't people murdered because they were celeb obsessed?

Without DOUBT....Celeb fanatics!
Who cares about what Celebs do with their pathetic, superficial lives?

MMO players have more of a life. They keep to themselfs, and concentrate on a goal, rather than just bitching about everyone and everything around them.

Celeb fanatics they delve into the world of trying to find out every little thing about someone because they are famous, where as gamers on WoW at least socialize with other gamers which isn't that bad.

I didn't vote because you didn't put a third option in. You can hardly fault the people who provide these forms of entertainment because they are making money...LOTS AND LOTS OF MONEY! Both are forms of entertainment that cater to different crowds, and while one might be different than the other, neither side can claim to be better.

MMO players.

Scary as it sounds, at least celebrity fanatics are fanatic over something that actually exists.

.. Though that is a poor argument. Bah. Obsessive MMO players just annoy me. I don't see the point in it.

MMO Fanatics..

I can tell you this from personal experience. I would much rather have been paying attention to someones life than wasting away in front of the computer not living mine.

Celebrity fanatics see daylight, and move out of the basement to be closer to their celebs.

Either way, obsession over ANYTHING is a bad thing.
But celeb fanatics are a bit worse.

Celebrity fanatics have less of a life because they idolize those with better status than them.
Hardcore MMO players just play a game alot, they don't pick apart tiny details of peoples lives as if anyone actually gives a shit.

This is a tough call. At least MMO players are part of a community and, even in a virtual sense, are interacting with others. Celeb fanatics just idolize others, and for that, I say they have no lives of their own.

Wow...this is blatant flaming. I have friends who are hardcore MMOists and they have lives just like everyone else.
