At first, I was going to choose the hardcore MMO players, but then I stopped myself and read the first post. And then I immediately changed my mind.

At least MMO players have SOME sort of social interaction, even though its probably mostly superficial. Some people even get married on WoW. Sad as hell, I know, but hey, at least they don't buy wallpaper of Michael Phelps' face.

My vote goes to people who are celebrity fanatics ABOUT famous MMO characters. Like the guy who writes slash fiction about himself and Leroy Jenkins.

At least MMO addicts have a social network to enjoy w/ others like themselves. Gossip addicts need others' problems to be social.

I always will hate that part of celebrity. And people dedicating themselves to it is something I consider to be below human intelligence. Hardcore MMO players... I would want to say something good about them but nothing comes to mind... however, if I had to say which I would exterminate off the face of the earth. It wouldn't be the MMO players.

I'd say whoever wastes their life away thinking about who's life has more validity.

Between the two, I'd go celebrity fanatics. Of course, these are generalisations. We need to keep in mind that some people do take these things too far. Examples being stalkers and excessive WoW players who starve themselves. Fact is, they both have no lives equally, but there are some who do get involved in both on a healthy level. It really just comes down to the individual in question.

Although the reason I picked celebrity fanatic is because while it is based on real life, that doesn't make it more involved with real life. Reading is indulging yourself in a fictional world that does not exist and yet it is seen with more respect than games. The reason for this is because reading has been around a lot longer and has thus earned respect by the wider community. Games have not.

Also I consider it pointless to devote your life to what another person you don't know is doing, especially since they don't know you and would not care if they met you. While in an MMO at least you're focusing on what you're doing, virtual or not, that's still your own life.

MMO Fanatics..

I can tell you this from personal experience. I would much rather have been paying attention to someones life than wasting away in front of the computer not living mine.

Celebrity fanatics see daylight, and move out of the basement to be closer to their celebs.
Isn't being a celeb fanatic the same, if not worse than not living like a MMO player?

Easy.

Thought I was definitely going to vote for MMO players but after reading the poll I completely changed my mind. At least they're not fantasising about somebody else's life.

In my opinion, Celebrity fanatics have more of a life, as they don't spend most of their lives staring at a screen, sorry if I'm stereotyping, but everyone i know that is obsessed with games has just wasted their lives doing nothing but spend time in a world that doesn't exist. I also have friends that are very obsessed with Tom Delonge, but they don't spend every minute of the day talking and researching about him. Also, there are more people obsessed with games than there are people obsessed with celebrities (as far as I'm aware) and the difference in numbers changes the situation of the argument.

if i play an MMO for hours, it's still my life, i interact socially with people i may never have had the chance to meet otherwise, learning about all sorts of things, not to mention (this good old pro commentary on gaming) improving my hand eye coordination, lateral thinking and puzzle solving skills.

Stalking is a crime in some places - why are celebrity obsessives any different!

This sorta reminds me of the article i found on here not too long ago about how MMOs such as WoW could be considered a religion since they have the main bases of religion covered.

Which again its all a path of self-realisation and self-enlightenment, thus self improvement.
As for celebrity fanatics, well some of them borderline criminal. Taking things just because a celebrity touched it.
I think i remember hearing a report of someone selling britney spear's chewing gum which they'd fished out of some bin. Creepy stuff =/

Oh and if anyone could link me to that MMO religion article, i'd appreciate it.

I was a hardcore MMO player once, played with lots of fellow hardcore players, most of em still hardcore. Some of them really were no-lifers (one had his girlfriend dump him, he got fired, and afterwards sad "WoW is worth it"), but celed-fanatics have such excesses as well, think full blown stalkers, people just lying in the garden of some celeb. Most of the hardcore players I played still had lots of friends, went out, had girlfriends, wives or even kids (plenty of times we had to pause a raid because one of our tanks had to tuck the baby in bed or feed it, everyone was cool with it) and in short had a proper social life outside there hardcore gaming. The magical word is "planning", wich they did very very well. I think most celeb-fans are about the same, both groups have there true freaks, so technically a tie, but most celeb-freaks are kind of...scarier in a way. Freaking out when they see him/her in real life, going crazy if they get there hands on stuff touched by there fan. The worst are full blown criminals, can't say that about true MMO addicts.

You're onto a kinda one sided debate here, considering the forum.

But either way, we spend hours of our lives entertaining ourselves via digital means, and getting nothing from it but the... actually, why we game is another discussion altogether. but regardless of your reasons you are simply wasting time.

So, what? Entertaining yourself is a waste of time?

75% of the people who voted for celebrity fanatics probably play a hardcore MMO. besides the fact that this is not a very good website for that poll. Seeing as how IT'S A GAMING WEBSITE. Geez, you couldn't get anymore biased than this. Go to a celebrity website and ask people who they think has less of a life.

Call me biased, but celebrity nuts have less of a life than MMO nuts do.

Celebrity nuts pursue the life of another person to share with others. Basic attempt at invasion of privacy.

MMO nuts are primarily working for their own enjoyment, which right there makes them a step higher. I would also take a stab that a raid is more social and team oriented than snapping a nip slip.
