It is common curtosy for the guy to pay.

It leaves a "I'm a nice person" sort of feel.
Not really since everyone does it, it just means that nowadays if you don't you're the feminist jerk. ^_^
I dunno, I recken plenty of the females that have commented so far wouldn't mind splitting the bill
I don't think any of my friends would have it, but then girls (my friend kind of girls anyway) do tend to be pretty damn pretentious and overly abusive of the power play that is a relationship.

My wife made 20k more than I did while we were dating, I paid for everything every time. She wasn't happy about it.

It relates back to sacrifice.

Guy's would go out and hunt and thus demonstrate they can provide, which would make them ideal mates.
Can't exactly hunt anymore, for the most part, so it's about how much money you can throw around. Demonstration of your ability to provide.

Of course with rising incomes and greater equality this becomes a moot point. Maybe.

The guy, as it prevents any sort of fake feminism from the girl.
how does it prevent anything? If she was going to be a nasty i-have-teeth-in-my-genitals type paying for her dinner won't stop her (or you might get to the check and find out she already paid), I'm sure genuinely nice females wouldn't treat you differently if you paid or didnt pay o_O

Well, it's all dependent on the type of date. If me and my swooning love are going out for a nice romantic evening and I'm all but expecting for our clothing to litter whatever room we end up deciding on, then I'm more likely going to pay for the food, gas, parking, and entertainment. Because a good wank just doesn't have the same feeling and prostitutes are more expensive if only by a little.

But if it's a casual date with a friend or a group outing to a restaurant before heading off to the movies, then everyone pays for themselves; unless it's arranged beforehand because someone is broke this week.

Honestly though, and like most of you, I don't see why it's come to be expected that men pay. It's outdated to think that women can't fend for themselves. Most of my female friends look at me like I'm crazy when I offer to pay for them anyways, so yeah, that's that.

Ahh... I was referring to women who insist on being feminist yet still want the guy to be a gentleman(not equal treatment->not feminism). So basically once you pay she lose all rights to qq about equal rightsXD

It's whoever gets to pick the restaurant. If the guy does, he pays. If the girl does, she pays.

Just the two of us, usually me. Sometimes she says she's paying and I won't debate the point (she'll also end up with a better job in the long run so I'm getting ahead now.)

If it's an outing with other people we'll pay for ourselves.

Depends. Are you "taking the person out?" You pay. Or are you just going out together? Figure out a way to split the costs.

If some guy insists on paying out of some misguided sense of chivalry, whatever, your choice. If some chick *expects* to be pampered as such simply because she thinks her vagina entitles her to something, she can go to hell.

Whoever has money. That sounds reasonable to me...
Pretty much. It depends a lot on the particular circumstances - if a guy is dating a much higher-earning girl, she can pay.

If they're just friends, split it.

But once you're out of college and all working, "split it" means exactly that. Pulling out the calculators is petty and demeaning - just each pay half (or a quarter if there are 4 of you, etc) and call it a day.

Wow, guys! Isn't heteronormativity great?

The person who does the asking out should pay. That, to me, seems like the fairest arrangement.

Yeah. Unless the girl entirely insists that she pays or that we go Dutch, I'd feel bad if I didn't pay for the both of us.

This thread depresses me. It made me realize I haven't been on a date in a year.
