I say we just put William Shatner on the bridge of our first intersteller ship and tell him
"Wing it."

The Marines aren't truly independent of the Navy, they rely on the Navy for a lot, and in fact the Marines receive many of their instructions from the Department of the Navy, their Officers all go to the Navy Academy, and their medics all come from the Navy.
True, but they are still considered to be separate entities for the purposes of both organization and funding, if I recall correctly. And NASA, considered to be our across-the-board source of power on all things space-eriffic (that's so going to be a word when I start editing dictionaries for a living), is even more independent of it's parent organization, the air force. However, if Japan were to be the first nation to actively colonize space in large enough amounts to require policing/armed forces issues, they would probably make it a parliamentary office. The Truth is, it depends almost entirely on which country gets enough people up there first, and then things will happen accordingly.

There would be a separate branch devoted specifically for it, but I believe a combination of air force and navy would do most of it, with marines being the, you know, the SPAC MARRIN armies.

The navy of course. They're space ships. Besides, the navy is the best branch of the military and deserves to have the most important job. Especially when all they have to do now is sail around the oceans aimlessly launching planes and cruise missles miles away from any actual combat.

Go navy.

Most likley, it will some sort of Naval branch of a large Earth coillition (like in Halo it is The United Nations Space Command). So mabe The NSC (NATO Space Command)or some sort of United Nations military (when I say military, I MEAN military, not peacekeppers) command.

Or mabe some sort of cooperate navy will run the space navy, considering it seem to happen in one and every five science fiction story abount Earth fighting in space (Ex. Ben Bova's asteroid war series, Nexus the Jupiter Incident)

Combine all three. Big space ships are more like naval vessels, but would contain fighters/bombers and house marines/infantry. Basically what they do in Starship troopers (the book).

IIRC, current US military structure places ICBMs and satellites under the USAF Space Command [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Force_Space_Command] (they're currently in the process of restructuring some of those functions).
