Leaving aside that I don't consider animals to be subordinate to humans. If this happened to me, that someone would save either me or their pet, I would understand why they chose their pet and not me. The same goes for if they had to choose between me and their closest person.

I wouldn't be angry at them for that decision. To me it seems sensible that they would choose someone close to them rather than me. In their situation I would probably have done the same.

That is not to say I wouldn't feel extremely bad about it. Having to be the cause of a lost life is not something I would want to be, ever. And I'm the kind of person who feels bad about harming tiny seedlings I've grown attached to, and I've more than a few times felt bad for killing a fly, so I doubt this has anything to do with empathy. Yes, I do think there is a lack of empathy in this world, but I don't think this question proves that in any way.

Why would I choose a complete stranger over someone I love and care about? Of course I would choose to save my pet, infact I'm suprised that more people dont agree.

You save the PERSON. I love my dogs. ALOT. But they aren't people. It's IMO the moral thing to do. People first, even if they are pricks. (not that i think the op is, just saying.)

Or are you insinuating that human life is inherently worth more than animal life, irrespective of any other factors?
Human life is absolutely more inherently important. Humans are self-aware and capable of higher thought, while 99.9% of other animals are not. It is the same reason you would squash a spider without a second thought, but would hesitate to kill an orangutan.

This does not mean I advocate the abuse of animals or ravaging the environment, but when it is a matter of life or death, there is not a single species of animal I would save over a random human's life.

There is a serious lack of empathy in the modern world.

Even as a pet owner myself (I have a cat), I feel that people who put the lives of animals they own over other human beings are SELFISH. Selfish because their pets love them unconditionally and provide companionship,
Well, aren't you a hyupocritical little shit?
You declare pet owners to be devoid of empathy and selfish because they wouldn't save your worthless little life, well fuck you, you are the exact kind of person that I would gladly let die horribly.

Would you let your child die if it would ave a stranger?
No?
Then I declare you to be selfish and lacking in empathy, you'd let another human being die, possibly leaving a family behind just because you don't want to give up the mewling fruit of your loins, you could easily get another one you realise?
Why are we suddenly we are talking about human children? Are you equating them to animals and pets?

By the way my dog, my best freind, the only thing to stand by me no matter what, my FUCKING FAMILY that had been there keeping me sane since I was eleven died a few days ago, you have no fucking idea the pain you feel, as you clearly don't care about your animals.

I would activly KILL a dozen strangers if it would have given me even another day with him, a pet is the most loyal and loving family it is possible to have.
Without any sarcasm, I'm sorry for your loss. But I still find it is extremely disturbing that you think this way.

I love my pets, I really do, but I value human life more. My dog, while cute and unconditionally loving, could never do as much as you could, even if I don't know you.

i'd miss your fairly skilled trolling if you died. (no, i'm not saying this thread is trollish, but he's done quite a few others that are.)

plus, i've never understood putting the life of an animal above the life of a human. i like animals, and all, but they're not human.

It's not unexpected that most choose differently than myself. I personally value human life more highly than that of even my cat, so I wouldn't think twice about saving a stranger, even if it cost her life

Personally I see no reason why a human's live should be worth more than an animal's. Sorry OP, you might be a perfectly nice person, but any pet of mine gets preference.

It's not that I wouldn't save you.

It's just that I can't not save my dog.
This.
I love my pets. I'd rather have something I care about live then something I don't know. That's not a lack of empathy. That's having a heart, and using it to take care of something that is closer to you.
Here's a different way of wording the same question
"Would you rather your pet die, then an unknown stray animal?"

I would personally strangle every dog on the planet if it saved one junkie with aids. I fully enjoy the company of my pets but no matter the connection I feel to them they wouldnt understand the situation, you would. For that reason alone I would save you.

I have known my dog for 10 years. I have known you for less than 2 minutes. My dog lives. I would have no second thoughts about my decision.

Well, my cat died last year, so you win by default... if you become my new pet.
