PLEASE RESPOND MATURELY!

Just to get this out of the way, I am not using ignorant as an insult. To be ignorant is to be uninformed and is not necessarily a bad thing. Now that we have that out of the way...

For some reason, sex has come to have this extremely strange status as being taboo for some or the greatest thing evar for others. Speaking from the point of view of someone who has had sex, I've come to realize that it really isn't deserving of all the hype it gets. It is a great way for two consenting lovers to express their feelings towards each other, and it is enjoyable. But it's not really anything that someone should feel proud or ashamed of, nor to be exploited or abstained from for reputation. What I want to know, especially for those who have partaken in sex, who do you believe is more ignorant in their preaching of sex to the masses: Those who call for abstinance or those who spread the idea that sex is the greatest thing ever?

Personally I believe that those who call for abstinance are worse. They make out sex to be this disgusting, shameful that it really isn't. I do believe that it should only be once you are ready, but if you think that you are in love before marriage and want to express your love, go right ahead. It is not the right of anyone to censor how you express that love. Though I know religion does preach abstinance from sex until marriage, and am not trying to make you go against your religion, as an atheist, and knowing there are many atheists, agnostics and other non-religious people, do not see the big deal in sex before marriage, aka sex without the goal of procreation. In response to the idea that it is to be safe from unexpected pregnancy and STDs, I find it humorous to quote Penn Gilette in his and Teller's show Bullsh*t in which he said "Being abstinant to protect from STDs and pregnancy is like never leaving your house to avoid being hit by a vehicle". I use a condom and last I checked, there are no little me's running around and I'm quite healthy both sexually and not-sexually.

*NOTE: I Might Have Gotten That Quote Slightly Wrong, But That's More Or Less The Jist Of It*

*SECOND NOTE: There is no "both" option because I honestly want to know which one you guys each think is more ignorant*

I disagree. In my community, those who call for abstinence don't make it out to be disgusting. Most are just rooted in Judeo-Christian dogma.

EDIT: To clarify, it's been my experience that sex is not demonized in modern Catholic communities (where I was raised at least). Sex is one of those issues that simply needs education devoted to its topic. Like guns. If you educate people they'll make the decision that best suits them.

The latter. Abstinence has some good points. And everyone knows that sex is not the greatest thing ever. That's just silly.

Abstinance supporters, they spread ideas that just get kids in trouble over time.

"Yes Timmy, the Vagina does have teeth that will eat your penis."
I don't recall ever being told that while growing up.

I think the most ignorant thing is when people say abortion is evil inhumane.

I don't want to be mean or anything, but really now! Our planet does not need any more people than it has now!

Don't question my logic!

Or maybe it's because I've never really heard either side. I like to stay out of real life flame wars.
I can respect that.

But honestly, I'm on the side that says "people who say sex is the best thing ever" are worse. Now that could be because I never had to deal w/ grassroots-types who actually do give abstinence a bad name.

Ultimately, it's a decision that should be made by the individuals.

An episode of Boston Legal found a school guilty for not teaching kids about condoms and preaching abstinence when she got an STD because she didn't know about condoms. I think that informed TRUTH is the best way any society can survive. To quote Thomas Jefferson: "The best society is the most informed" (probly off by a few words)

It is a joke. Would you prefer the Family Guy version: "Your penis will fall off?"
Dude, I understand jokes.

Fuck Yeah!!!!!!

Finally someone who is rational!

Oh and to be on topic

I think that both sides are very ignorant. One side thinks that you should never have sex until your married, so they obviously have not had sex before, are ignorant because they preach about something they know nothing about.

On the other hand, people who think that sex is the best thing ever don't see the whole picture. Its about showing love for one another. And those people will end up having too much sex and get an STD or get someone pregnant

I'm probably the in the middle ground. I mean I don't think that 13 yr old should be having sex. But theres no way your waiting till you get married to have sex, I mean good luck if you can.

Theres nothing wrong with abstinence. I think it is better to dissuade youngsters from secksing anything they can than to tell them its fine and to do it whenever they like.

Of course, telling people that sex is bad and naughty and disgusting is a good way to really damage someone (I can say this from experience, having been taught all my life that sex before marriage is immoral and sinful and so on, and now being almost completely unable to form relationships due to an ingrained fear of intimacy). However, abstinence for the right reasons is NOT being ignorant.

Neither extreme (when they ARE taken to the extreme) is healthy. Sex is natural, but I think it is also really important to reinforce that it also carries risks (pregnancy, STD's etc), and should not be done with wild abandon.

/rambling ramble.

I think that the people who are always on about abstinance are the most ignorant. Speaking from the point of view of someone who has had sex, I definetely agree that it is not the best, nor the most important thing in life, but it is a great way for people to become closer in a relationship and to show their feelings for eachother. Plus its good fun! However the entire concept of sex being "dirty", "wrong" and taboo is completely flawed, it only does more damage than good.

I'd say the people who preach abstinence.
There is nothing wrong with practicing, but telling others that they should be practising is rude.

If you tell people that they should be abstinent - particularily males - then you tell them to ignore the majority of the media.
No matter where you look these days, something/someone is being sexualized somehow.
Society has taken the human body, the female body, and turned it into a walking sex object.

Males don't just pop out one day and begin to think that sex is an amazing thing and that they should fight for it.
They're just raised to believe that, whether they know it or not.
