One of my cats is evil, but I love em anyway.

Even though they may scratch my furniture to death, climb the curtains, smash things chasing flies and, for some reason, lick my arms.

If the nicer one of them wants something it'll reach up to the edge of the chair and tap me on the leg. The 'evil' one will generally just leap/run headfirst into anything it wants. It also hisses at visitors.

I prefer cats to dogs. Not that I don't like dogs, though.

I hate all animals equally. Dogs more than cats though.

Cats have a long history of being associated with evil and sorcery in North American tradition. It's natural that the distaste for cats lasts, even after we realize witches aren't exactly out to get us.

I prefer cats to dogs actually. They are cuter.

I don't have one though. I have a rabbit. I don't have a cat because I am allergic to them. I love my rabbit though.

They are not evil..Only someone who had never lived with them would say that because like the OP said, thats how they are always portrayed.

They can be devious, yes but certainly not evil. I have 5 of them, all of them have their own traits and I would never have it any other way. For the record I love all animals, including dogs but cats are really something special to me.

The cat hatin' rednecks like the OP describes are not uncommon unfortunately. These neanderthals are actually intimidated by something that they can't instantly dominate, hence the hate for cats. Notice these sorts of people always own creatures like bull-terriers?? The ugliest, most stupid of all dog breeds, just fitting for the 'cat hating redneck neanderthal'.

I'm not really into pets in general, honestly. All the caring for them and cleaning them (and everything the freaking touch) just doesn't seem worth it for the single-minded, fickle affection that I barely get to even experience because I'm so busy doing the former. In fact, when you do get that affection, it can even go wrong, and you just end up damp or sore or covered in hair! ...or a combination of the three. This applies to all pets, IMO, that the payoff you get is proportional to the effort you have to put into their care, but that the effort always outweighs the payoff.

Nonetheless, my girlfriend has an insane hatred for cats that I find unreasonable. I actually like cats, and other animals -- it's just taking care of them that irks me.

Dogs bite people. Cats do not bite people. Yet people "love" dogs, but are "unsettled" by a cat's autonomous ways.

Conclusion: people are weak, malicious, and selfish little bastards. Those "unnerved" by a cat's free will quite possibly have a problem dealing with their own.

Btw, I love both cats and dogs, and virtually every other animal (if it isn't super ugly, and even then...)

I have lived with cats before. I have had to look after them while their owners where away. (this was before I knew I was alergic) but the are sly, cunning, mysterious ect. Traits I would usually compare to that of a bond villian.

Listen, as I said before I do not hate cats and that is what the topic is about "Why all the hate on Cats?"
I think cats are cool.
I think bond villians are cool.
Do you see where Im going with this?

I'm gonna go with...

People mistake dogs' dependency for love and cats' independency for indifference.

Me? I love cats.

And on a quite related note, I'm terrified of most dogs.

I don't hate cats. I like them as much as I like dogs.
I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to cats though. Whenever I'm around them for a while, my eyes start to get red and itchy.

Thats the great thing about cats. They are extremely contempt. As long as you keep them fed and a place to sleep, they will be happy. As far as being covered in hair, there are plenty of short hair breeds that lose no hair at all. They are also the cleanest animals, often mine will clean themselves just after my grubby hands have given them a pat lol. They can also be trained to shit in one spot from an extremely young age.

I don't know about effort outweighing the payoff either..Ask any cat lover if they don't think the effort is worth the reward? A dog on the other hand IS alot of effort and a person will get alot more from a dog from the more time that they spend with it. But thats cool if pets aren't your thing but if the taking care part of it is what turns you off, a cat is probably for you. Good if you ever want to ditch your girl, since she has an "insane" hatred of cats :)

Ummm... yes they do. They do a lot. I've been over my friend's house, he has a cat, and it always bites me for no reason.

And they can and have done a lot worse than biting. Clawing your legs if you dare get up, for example.

And by the way, my dog has never bitten me in anger, only when we're play fighting(it's quite fun).

Yeah sorry, the "cat hatin redneck" thing wasn't aimed at you, just what the OP was referring too. Sorry if there was any confusion.

I just thought "evil" was a bit of a strong word, more like "evil, but in a good way" lol, if that makes sense.

I like cats. I've never been allowed to have one, though, because my dad hates them. He says they're sneaky. We've always had a dog. I love dogs, too, but as soon as I'm on my own, I'm getting a cat.

It is also next to impossible to teach cats respect towards other peoples belongings.
Well duh, they happen to be cats, material possessions aren't in their meowcabulary.

You see that house you live in that you paid a ton fuck of money for, cats or dogs have no concept of us getting a Marketing Executive position at Cisco Systems because they don't have to do that sort of stuff, those expensive speakers? perfect scratching posts.

There are ways to teach them, with dogs its all about being the alpha of the group and they will not fuck with your stuff, with cats sprinkle white pepper over the stuff you don't want them to touch because they find it hugely uncomfortable and associate that object with discomfort hence they wont go near it anymore.

Just going to a cat "no bad cat" gets you nowhere.
