I thought they weren't mutually exclusive...

Likewise. But i always wonder if it was I who abandonned they. Not vice versa.

Has anybody read Buy-ology, by Martin Lindstrom?

People may have developed an attachment to a brand, because of consistent exposure and fond memories linked to the brand (Nintendo, Sony, Coke, et cetera). This emotional attachment competes and some times interfers with rational consumer thought.

Loyalty to a brand is nothing shameful, but be prepared to be bitten in the arse by it if said brand drops a s-bomb on the market.

Blind loyalty, buying everything that comes out from a brand at face value, ranting how Steam roxxors teh big one111, and belittling other based on their product choice, is just plain dumb.

Then you are not a fanboy. Fanboy is an intrinsically derogatory term that is meant to describe a person who ignores the good points of other consoles (genres, media, computers, whatever said person is a fanboy of) as a means of justifying their affections.

Fanboys will also exaggerate or fabricate flaws in other systems, ignoring or denying similar flaws in their first love and they will also suggest that taking a different perspective makes this differing person intrinsically wrong and ignorant.

There is also the idea that "fanboys" have little perspective or skills outside those things they are fans of (i.e. a PS3 fanboy can't get a pretty girl to date him because he can't put her or her interests in front of the PS3)

There is nothing wrong with having a preference in a console (for example) and being a fan of it does not calculate to "fanboy". It's hard to explain, the term fanboy has always been a negative semantic variation of fan. A good example would be like asking what's wrong with the term ******? I'm black and I don't see anything wrong with that.

Well, there isn't, but you don't want to be referred to in a certain way.

I don't think your idea and the common idea of what constitutes a 'fanboy' are the same.

In my opinion, someone who likes something because of one of its properties (price, games, controls, etc) is a fan, and I can listen to your opinion and agree or disagree on what I think is a merit. We have civilized conversation, and all is well.

A fanboy on the other hand, loves something for reasons unexplained (or inexplicable), and will ignore any arguments to the contrary with the kind of zealotism that lead to holy wars causing millions of deaths. They will simply tell you that their choice is the "best", and if yours is different that yours is the "worst, lol" without any kind of explanation.

Fans are fine, fanboys are an annoyance.

I think fanboys are bad because usually they end up angering the community, and doesn't do anything good. Also, they usually have no evidence to support their claims. Like when a fanboy goes around claiming that the PS3 sucks, they just say, "Because it had Haze". So what, Haze was made long ago now, and no one really cares.

Some parts I agree with. I was a Nintendo fanboy back in the N64 era but still agreed that PS1 had some better games, but also some worse.

It's OK to be a fanboy as long as your not ignorant and saying things like "XBOX IS UBER POWNAGE WII IS TEH SUCK NO GOOD GAMES" because the Wii has some great games but people don't realize that.

Hey, Indigo_Dingo is the head of the PS3 fanboys here and I'm second in command!

Seriously, who wouldn't want to be a fanboy? It's a stable job with good income, the insurance is fantastic if you play your words right, we get tons of 401'ks, the dental plans cover everything, AND you get a little bobbly-head for your desk at work!

Plus, the parties are great. You get access to the secret bathrooms and you control who get's the party favors (I'm still not going to let you have one Stompy!)

Only problem is, this place is too one-sided. We've already got a whole guild of Ps3 guys, and the PC people are adamant but they don't come here frequent enough, and there's nobody on the Wii or 360 side!

Send us an application to see if you're fit for the fanboy job!

Sincerely;

The Fanboy Guild.

Hello, I am Nathan DTS and I would like to apply for a job; I play frequently on my PS3 (usually 3 hour sessions at least 3 times a day. Needless to say I don't get much sleep.).
Unfortunately I am currently devoid of my pride and joy due to the Yellow light that claimed it for it's own (I was just about to start a session of MGO).

This. Stereotypical "fanboys" are usually annoying because their right and everyone else is wrong. I wouldn't call you a fanboy either, just a fan.

I'm a Halo fanboy, but it doesn't mean I'm the 9 year old profane, homophobe, crazy fuck on xbox live. And it doesn't mean that I'm incapable of playing and enjoying other games on other consoles.

Being a fanboy isn't a bad thing NESCESSARILY. If you can take critisism then it's ok. The thing is, Xbox's break. They do. I know of 2 that have. I know of no PS3s that have. Does that make me a fanboy? Maybe so, but if it does, who gives a damn?

What really bugs me are Zero Punctuation fanboys who actually listen to what he says and take it as a valid opinion. Sure I like ZP, he's hilarious, but under no circumstances are his reviews worth taking any notice of. Slightly off topic there, but hey.

Gentlemen.

Need we forget that Fan was always a shortened version of Fanatic?

That we've taken the word Fanatic, shorted it to Fan and then re-expanded to Fanboy doesn't really change it's meaning. Besides, Fanboy has always been derogatory slang. The OP question is something akin to asking if it's bad to be a self-identified r-tard.

Needless to say, in both the OP's question and my example, not drooling mindlessly over every little obsession precludes one from being either.

I'm a SCE (SONY Computer Entertainment) fanboy, and proud. I am a fanboy because I feel that thier products are the best quality. I can still acknowledge the pros and cons of other consoles but I believe that SCE's products have been nothing short of revolutionary, with amazing games, better disk format than it's competitors (I know PS2 and the original Xbox both used DVD but the Xbox came out after the PS2) and great hardware specs.
You're not a fanboy then. You are however, wrong.
Kindly explain why I am wrong.
And thats the last we'll hear of him in this thread.
I do hate it when people challenge my opinions without any reason for doing so.
No, I meant thats the last we'll hear of Decoy.
And that is also what I meant. He challenged my opinion and just left.

Fanboys are obnoxious simply because they won't try the other side on the stupid principle that they KNOW that their side is better.

It's mostly like religion I guess... taken to the max.

I don't see that there is anything wrong with being fan boy in a sense. If you really like a game, show, and/or manga enough to go out by everything that is tied to it, that's fine. It's great even. That's what consumerism is all about. It's bad when you ,as a fan boy, try to push that game/show/manga/whatever down other peoples throats as the greatest thing to be among men since white women started having nice asses.

It's not bad to be a fanboy.

Just like it's not bad to be a christian, a muslim, a jew, or an athiest.

What it's bad to be is an extreme fanboy.

Or an extremist of anything, really.

I'm a fanboy, I'll admit it. However, I don't let my fanboyishness blind me to the lack of entertainment value of specific video games, or the high quality of new additions to old franchises [Fallout 3, anyone?]. All a fanboy is, really, is a boy that is a fan of something >_>

Extreme fanboys take it to a whole 'nother level, with a zealot-like fervor that rivals the Crusaders when they went to make all the Persians dead. They will never be pleased by anything that isn't exactly, wholly, and faithfully tailored to the past, which is a horrible way to be in any sense. They're so absorbed in their belief that such and such is god-like in it's gaming quality that they don't have any more fun with new stuff...

So no, it's not bad to be a fanboy -- It's bad to be an extreme fanboy.
