The solution: Ragebaiting.

You need at least 3 friends in the game normally, but sometimes you get other awesome people who pick up on what you're doing and join in. Wait for the shit talking to start. It's usually only one or two dickbags who haven't hit puberty yet. Pick one. Then jibe the shit out of him. If you're against him, target him specifically, then taunt him after each kill. If you're on the same team, always shadow him so you can see his deaths, then belittle his lack of skills and accuse him of causing the team to lose. When he inevitably tries the, "Oh man I'm used to playing with pros", that's when the collusion really comes into play. You have a few clan names just plum made up and you drop them into conversation, talking about the glory days, about how [insert made up name of dude] would host servers while some other dude would own and how they hated 8 year olds who occasionally strayed onto their servers and would insult them until they wet their pants. By this stage, the turd will be close to tears if he hasn't muted you already. Smelling the blood in the water, you should also have the formally quiet types joining in, finally smelling an opportunity for a little revenge. Close in and keep up the assault until he does quit. Then make sure you all rate him poorly due to his rage quitting.

"Why are some people so angry?"

Normal person. Audience. Anonymity... etc etc. I'm pretty sure we've been over this before.

Oh, and the presence of a lot of 8-16 year olds doesn't help.

PC gaming doesn't usually have the sort of problem with 8-16 year olds trash talking. If someone starts to get offensive and annoying a moderator will just ban them from the server.

While there's your problem! The 360 community is notorious full of idiots. Any online game community has a whole mess of them though. The reason for their dickary and anger usually stems from the fact that that hidden by the anonymity of the internet they can express the rage and emotions that they face daily but bottle up for fear of repercussion. The internet prevent repercussion so they can say whatever and express a plethora of pent up emotional responses. If you want to guarantee that you're not playing with someone who is or could be an ass then you must play with someone you can see and affect. This is impossible on the internet though (someday though, man will be able to slap people in the face from across the internet... someday).

Because people don't like to admit that it is their fault that they lost so they must come up with an excuse or whine and complain about it being someone else's fault.
I have done this, just like everyone else in the world.

I'm the kind of person that can take a deviating loss and brush it off, others have a difficult time dealing with this issue...

Hehe, me and my buddies purposely agitate the 'leet' gamers.
Most commonly resulting in them either rage quitting or telling lame jokes about our mom's and their dicks.
Ahh, fun times, fun times.

OT: Yes, almost all of them get to serious over these video games and treat it like a job and not the game it is.

as a PC gamer (yes I feel it necessary to make that distinction) I don't really see a lot of this. Sure there's the occasional idiotic chat spam, but usually we all play nice and depending on the game we just hang out and chat (this includes FPS games) hell this even goes for Halo PC (if people even play that anymore otherwise went is the word) and yes this includes all instances of griefers (god I <3 griefing so much fun to get a few friends together and try to out grief each other)
I find when Im playing MW2 for the PC things are fine and no problems with idiots (Probably due to their mind span no reaching far enough to install a game)

your problem is you aren't playing team fortress 2.
Fixed for you. It's true that Xbox LIVE is generally full of assholes but Team Fortress 2 is one of the rare exceptions. It's the 360 game I've played most and I've found people there to usually be really friendly and mature. It's the only 360 shooter in which I feel comfortable speaking into my mic. It's really not like Halo or MW2 or Gears of War.

I play online with my 360 a lot playing mostly FPS. I usually talk to my mates while doing so in our party and have a good laugh. The problem I have come across recently though is with MW2 and the "No party chat" rule with most game types. Demolition is probably my most preferable and this requires you to be in game chat. My typical game starts with some 8 year olds trash talking before the match at each other. Usually I mute them but sometimes I will be changing classes before a match. Shouting abuse at each other I pray that I don't get put on their team but more than likely I will get at least one. While the our team is losing due to the lack of TEAMwork the 8 year old complains that the team aren't "Pro". Usually resulting in them "Rage quitting" we lose no thanks to them. I can't see the amusement of shouting at people who live miles away. So I ask you do you think that online gaming is getting too angry?
You seem to have answered your own question as no offense to XBL it isn't exactly known for it's friendly user base but this is it because every 12 and under gamer has one. Also you're playing mostly FPS games which are the worst for arseholes as they are probably the most competitive games when you're not play competitively.

I think it's just certain games. MW2 specifically has a HORRIBLE multiplayer community. Not as bad as GTA4's but it's close. If I'm playing that game I always either talk to the friend I'm playing it with on skype, or if they can't do that I just immediately mute everyone else in the game on the pregame screen.

I find it hilarious when people trash talk, and later ragequit because they suddenly realize that they don't have a chance in hell to live up to the talk.

In other news, trash talk in small and clever amounts is just good fun. Anything more than that and it gets embarrassing. Vocal rage is also quite unnecessary, but I guess everyone aren't as capable at having a composed attitude.

well theres a difference between being angry and trash talking. i trash talk but do not yell and tea bag whenever i get a chance. yes these are dickhead things to do but thats the point the other person gets angry which results in their skill decreasing which means easier win for me :)
really its just a game and ya ive gotten pissed at games but when i run into some bullshit npc that does some over powered move that unblockable and nearly impossible to dogde >< .... anywho ive never gotten angry at players and when i get messages about them yelling or whineing or saying every curse there is..well i pitty them since they must have small dicks to get so bent outta shape over a game especially since the round will end in about 5-15mins and then you can start another one with the beauty of never seeing that asshat again...or for a while :p
but i dont see a difference in online gaming compared to humanity in general. theres normal ppl, asshats, elites, children, and children u want to strangle ^_^ or at least backhand so their balls drop n get a deeper voice. screeching kills ears :(
