Poll: Why are you buying Black Ops?

Because despite my huge amounts of skeptism it looks like it's going to fix a lot that was wrong with MW2, especially multiplayer-wise. At least I hope so, I still kinda fear the overpoweredness of the ballistic knife.

The singleplayer looks pretty entertaining though, but I hope it's a bit longer than MW2's. Even though I still enjoyed it. Yes it was short and the story was convulsed bullshit, but damn it was one big adrenaline rush.

That said, I probably won't get it on launch day. I first want to see reports about things like multiplayer balance, my biggest gripe with MW2. And the crappy spawn system. Spawning right in front of a minigun that's just being spun up? Really?

I didn't think there were this many sensible people on the Escapist. I'm actually extremely glad that there are people here who won't buy shitty games just because they look cool. I mean, didn't you kiddies learn your freaking lesson with MW2?

It's not even out yet and you haven't played it yet, yet you call it shitty. That actually makes me kinda sad, that people still do that here.

Also remember that MW2 wasn't developed by the same developer as Black Ops.

You didn't list my reason: multiplayer bots. I don't care about anything else in the game (though I'm sure it'll be on par with World At War) but the mere fact that this could bring multiplayer bots back into mainstream FPS use is something I feel compelled to support to the fullest.

And that's where a relatively objective analyse breaks down in opinion. I never said it was going to be innovative with a superb in-depth story and whatnot, I don't care either. I don't buy an FPS for that, if I want that I'll play Planescape: Torment (well except the graphics part, but if I want that I'll play Uncharted 2).

No, I buy games like MW2, BO and Bad Company 2 because I just want to be entertained. And while I enjoyed MW2 at the start, I found out later that it just didn't work properly. I'm starting to, slightly, look forward to BO because it seems to be working better than MW2. But as I don't know that for sure I'll wait for some reviews and comments by players on this site, especially MiracleOfSound.

But as it's looking now, Treyarch doesn't want to fall into the same pits IW fell into and to me that's pretty good news. They seem to have learned from IW's mistakes; dedicated servers, multiplayer bots, balance testing, etc. But I want to know for sure before I shell out for it.

Though, at some point I question myself: What is it _that_ new they couldn't have put in with a bigger patch? This is the bigger problem that, from my perspective, kills CoD. It's an unending and expensive stream of minor changes that loses any value the day it is bought.

EDIT: It only makes me think I'll be fcked over again, as always. The same way as with MW2 - I'll dislike it and they will announce an another "release that fixes the issues". Yeah, right. Learn to use patches.

I'm not buying it. I've never really been into Call of Duty much and MW2 really left a bad taste in my mouth. The campaign was short and the multiplayer fundamentally broken. I know Black Ops is being developed by Treyarch but lets face it. They're not going to be much different.

Ive pre ordered Black Ops and I personally am looking forward to playing the arse off it. Im buying it because I believe that the balence issues have somewhat been balanced, and COD games to me have always been fundementally good shooters (air support rape of thy gods aside).

So for those of you buying Black Ops, what are your main reasons for buying it?

Em you forgot probably the most important reason for a lot of PC users even considering to touch the game. Mod support and Dedicated servers.

I will see how it goes but I may in time by the game as it has added back in what was taken out in MW2.

An interesting question, but I don't think that it's that hard to answer for BO. It's set in a completely different setting and thus a completely (and hopefully not as wanky) story, customisation is radically different, a lot of different gamemodes, dedicated servers, multiplayer bots (yay practice!), re-balanced and somewhat different killstreaks, perks and weapons.

All in all it sounds more than enough to warrant a totally new game, one that can hopefully make me forget about MW2.

As for your edit, that's why I'm probably going to wait a bit before I'll actually get it. I want to be sure that isn't the case, or at least not as much as with MW2.

59£ is the cost of a regular game on Steam, if you're European. Now, I spent that money on WaW instead of something that, in retrospect would've been of much greater value to me.

I don't trust Treyarch enough to give that another shot. It's the same reason I will NEVER buy a Medal of Honor game again.
I can understand that such a standpoint may be narrow-minded if I applied it to everything, and I would have missed out on a truly great sequel (Assassin's Creed 2) if I had done so.
However, the difference is that the developers noted the issues in AC1 and set out to fix them in the sequel.
Treyarch has so far only acknowledged the flaws in Mw2's multiplayer and set out to fix those, but they still haven't given us any info about what they intend to do about their past mistakes, or even if they know there has been any past mistakes.

Now, I can understand this point of view will no doubt be met with harsh looks from the fans of the previous games, as well as those who have pre-ordered the current game. No-one likes having their favourite things tarnished by cynics such as me.

I've also been accused of nitpicking, due to me opting to complain about invisible walls, so I think I'll elaborate.
I agree with Yahtzee that invisible walls are the hallmark of shoddy game design. If there is an area in-game that looks like I should be able to go there, then I should be able to go there, otherwise it kills the immersion.

For instance, on the first level of WaW there's a rather big house in which enemies spawn and exit through an open door. There is nothing implying that the house is off-limits, and it would provide an excellent piece of cover for me. Thus I dart across the open field, through enemy fire, and smack I hit an invisible wall in the open doorway, can't take cover and die.
This is a great immersion-killer, and I never quite got it out of my head... of course the fact that the game is littered with these sorts of things doesn't help.

So, no WaW was a godawful example of bad game design, and I have no reason to believe Black Ops won't be the same. Buying into the pre-release hype is a great way to get suckered by games not up-to-par (see Medal of Honor).

This is why I will not buy Black Ops.

I'm planning on getting it but that's mostly because despite its flaws I enjoyed MW2. I've said it before and that is that it managed to make me have fun in online multiplayer, so maybe Black Ops can do the same, especially now that I've done whats to do in MW2. I won't get it on launch and if its crap then I might reconsider but I won't judge the game before I've played it.

I am still undecided over whether I will purchase Black Ops or not. On one hand there are things about it I like but there are other games I would rather have eg AC2: Brotherhood and New Vegas. However, if I am correctly informed and New Vegas isn't available where I am then if I still have enough money after getting AC2:B then I might get Black Ops as well.
