Mojang AB is in the quarterfinals of the Escapist March Mayhem Developer's Showdown 2011.

This thread isn't (primarily) about whether or not they deserved to get so far. (although, if you want, you are free to ***** your head off) It's about "HOW" and "WHY" they managed to make it this far.

Personally, I have played exactly one more game from Mojang AB then I have from Nintendo(believe it...) So I think it was perfectly justifiable for me to vote for the former. After that......well....pretty much option 2 to be perfectly honest...

For the record, I now regret voting against Obsidian in round 4 (the present round). They did a phenomenal job with New Vegas but were under-appreciated for it, so they needed all the attention they could get. The same cannot be said for Mojang.

So yeah, how do you feel about Mojang AB looking to be a surprise contender for the Best Dev title of MM?

EDIT: Can you guys stop asking for an "I didn't" option? The poll question is "I voted for Mojang AB because....."; It wouldn't make any grammatical sense if "...I didn't" was an option. This thread is there to discuss WHY you voted. Those who didn't vote for them are welcome to read.

It was always up against developers that I had a personal hatred for

I hate all it's competition
They have all made at least one game that I hate.

And I have no feelings either way about minecraft.

I voted for Nintendo first. They had a great year in 2010 (new Kirby, new Donkey Kong Country, and in 2011, they are reworking their online service for the 3DS, making a new Kid Icarus, a new Zelda and many, many more). I was pissed at first when Mojang beat Nintendo. But I got over it. I didn't let petty spite be the reason to vote against Mojang.

I voted for Mojang against Namco, because there was nothing I liked from Namco in 2010. I voted for Mojang against Epic, because while Bulletstorm was fun, I prefered Minecraft. And I voted against Obsidian because I hate Obsidian's business practice of releasing a buggy mess of a game with the promise of "we'll patch it later".

With the exception of the first round, I've been voting for Mojang simply because compared to their competition, they just were the better dev. Plain and simple. And that's what it should be about. I treated each round like it was the first round.

Honestly, I think Mojang is perhaps the single most overrated dev in the competition next to Valve, but it all comes down to how I like them compared to their current competition, not how I feel about the last round.

I look at the competition not so much as "Who has made a better game" but more as quality-density. What is the average rate of awesome that the company has produced? Now, that's not an entirely fair system when its a developer who has made all of one game versus another which has made hundreds but.. I can see why a lot of people see Nintendo as a horrible machine that churns out stale games for a decade and doesn't deserve a lot of respect.

I DON'T really get why anyone thinks minecraft is so great but, eh, different strokes. I'm amazed my Obsidian has made it this far anyway :)

I didn't vote for them against Nintendo or Namco Bandai.

I voted for them against Epic partly because I'm still annoyed with Epic for not porting Gears of War 2 and 3 to the PC, but mostly because it's been an age since I've played a game from Epic, and the one I played last wasn't great in my opinion (seem to remember it was UT3, but I could be wrong on that)

I voted for them against Obsidian because I've never played an Obsidian game, so it wouldn't be right to vote for them instead.

Seeing how all other developers in that corner don't have any good games (well besides Nintendo, but I still think Minecraft is better since I was a Sega kid and have no Nintendo nostalgia. Nintendo isn't as great as everyone likes to think). When I got to Valve vs Mojang, I picked Valve since it had better games. It's not a very complex reason.

For me, I put Mojang in my final against bioware. The reason is knowing how popular it is right now, especially on this forum and because its an indie developer and it needs as much accolades that it can generate to illustrate to larger devs and pubs that we DO want outside the box type games, and illustrates that in the scheme of things, graphics simply arent important provided the gameplay makes up for it.

EDIT: Oh, and because Nintendo is honestly more of a publisher than a developer any more and most of what they develop in house is just rehashes of their former glories. Epic because really Epics claim to fame is moreso from their engine than the games they actually develop.

Edit2: Dont like the poll choices. I picked Mojang, not because I thought they were the best dev, but because I felt they were good. Not winning the whole thing good. And I sort of expected their performance to be seconded by the community.

I honestly thought it was kind of funny. It's not like this is a serious competition anyway, and I like Mojang, even if they're not better than the people they've beaten. It's just amusing.

I voted for them because the competition is about the games the company released in the last year, and in my opinion Minecraft beats what Nintendo and Epic have released in the last year. If it was a competition of developers taking into account their entire backcatalogue of games, I'd have probably voted Nintendo since I loved everything they did in the N64 times and I also rather like Zelda: Twilight Princess and got 100% on Super Mario Galaxy, however I have not played a single Epic game for some reason.

I had Mojang all the way to the end in my bracket because I like them, maybe their game isn't finished, maybe they "Don't deserve to be this far in MM" But they just seem like they are made up of people instead of a giant company pumping out games every year they seem more human... If that makes any sense. Maybe the underdog part played in a little bit.

Must not be fond of any games from any company anywhere if you detest Nintendo.

Since...they kinda...you know...popularized the industry and have continually pushed it forward.

D-Pads, Controllers with Joysticks (not just Joystick Controllers), Rumble Packs...motion controls (not that I like them).

Pretty much the entire industry has been motivated and endlessly chasing after Nintendo.

I don't love all their games for sure but to hate them is kind of like hating water. It's sort of important if you like everything or anything else.

I feel they're the most deserving.

Minecraft is simply one of the most enjoyable game I have played. I literally have over 200 games on Steam and find Minecraft more fun to play than 99% of the games on my games list.

Mojang is an up-and-coming studio that redefined "Sandbox gaming".

Nintendo is probably already planning their next Mario Kart game.

Mojang has shown that even simple concepts don't necessarily have to be confined to casual games.

Epic Games is releasing the third instalment of a series about generic space marines.

Mojang, with less people on staff than your average badminton team, has managed to keep Minecraft relatively bug free.

Obsidian, with almost 20 times as many employees, recently released a sequel with no real changes made or bugs fixed from the original two years prior.

There's nothing really wrong with what other developers are doing, and it seems to be working out pretty well for them. That said, when there is an up-and-coming developer that has managed to bring more innovation to the industry on a (comparatively) small budget than any of them have in years, I know who I am going to vote for.

They are the underdog, they get votes for it. That's my theory anyway.

I wouldn't have voted them (him?) this far myself, but for better or worse, the people have spoken. They've knocked out companies that have made significant impacts on the industry by having an alpha to a game which still has the chance to turn into vapourware, which seems ridiculous to me. But then, I may just have different criteria that I'm following than most of the supporters.

As you can tell by the lack of a score card underneath my badges, I'm not included in March Mayhem, I don't really like it.

I would vote for them against:

Epic because they haven't ported Gears to the PS3
Nintendo because they lost my interest a while ago.

I voted for them because I genuinely thought they were better than their competitor in each MATCHUP.

That being said, if they somehow win the entire thing, I'll probably find it utterly hilarious.

Mainly because in the majority of match-ups (Nintendo excluded) I simply haven't played any games made by the other companies, nor Mojang, so I went for the one that I remembered more as a good company, which Mojang seemed to fit the bill.

I have them losing to Valve in my bracket in the next round, but I'm really starting to think that could go either way
