I highly doubt 40% of people here are altruistic. Because if you were doing it for ego or real world reward, wouldn't it make sense to vote for altruism then comment and tell everyone about it? Also I just don't think there are that many selfless people.

Me? I said "shrug" because I don't do that many good deeds, and when I do, it's because I've got nothing better to do or it's not much difficulty on my part or I know they will pay me back/ego. Mixture of everything.

Seeing a lot of people telling us about their anonymous donations and selfless good deeds. Sort of defeats the purpose of "anonymous" when you tell everyone, that's a reward, even if it's not monetary. No shame in it though, it's human nature.

Because I'm no one special. I have no right to make other peoples' lives worse for my own benefit or entertainment.

And besides, long ago, in a faraway place, I discovered the fabled First Rule of Humanity: Don't be a dick.

I don't really. I don't believe in such a solid, absolute concept. Everything is subjective. There are things that are beneficial to myself or others and things that are harmful to myself or others. Once I've concluded on whether an action is more beneficial or more harmful, the action that I should take is a logical, obvious choice.

So, I guess I'm just extremely pragmatic and amoral? Not immoral. Amoral. There is a large difference.

Intentionally causing harm when it doesn't benefit anyone is just illogical and petty. I don't quite understand the motivation behind it.

I don't think there's any ONE reason to do the right thing. There's a degree of altruism for me, I do good things because most of the time...it just feels right. But admittedly, I do think about my ego and I do like the idea of getting a reward etc.

I do what i was raised on, and what i was raised on just happened to be to always to the right thing. so just the way i was raised is my reason i guess.

mainly for no reward, but i also hope it affects my self-image too when i do good things. its nice when people actually know you to be a good person, rather than not know what kind of person you are at all.

I try to do what I believe to be right because it is the right thing to do, so altruism I guess.

I won't even pretend to say that is the only reason every time.

Well I voted the altruism option, but that doesn't mean I constantly give away all my money and spend my free time helping others. I just mean that if a specific situation comes up where I have the opportunity to help someone out without great cost to myself (I'm thinking lending or giving someone some money, helping someone pick up dropped items, giving someone a ride, escorting a hallmate through campus during HvZ, etc.), of course I'd help--I can't imagine that so many of you wouldn't. The only reason I can think of is... I'm not even sure lol, it's just what's right.

i chose the "*shrug* whatever" option, i'll help people if i've got nothing better to do or it's not too much of an effort for me to help them, friends can expect a higher amount of effort from me than the average person i don't know, also for some reason i've got this gentleman's complex that compels me to go to greater lengths for women then i do for men.

so yeah.

I guess it's a ego thing. I like knowing I'm a good person. I also usually feel guilty if I don't do the right thing unless I think the person deserves it.

Then you do get a reward. It's emotionally and psychologically satisfying for you to do it.

OT: I only do what is "right" when it behooves me. And what is "right" or "wrong" is always debatable.
Yes, but that doesn't feel right. I like more the man who helps because it is needed, rather than the man who helps because it'll make him feel good. Even though I know they are the same person. Odd that.

I think that the people who chose altruism are either lying or they don't know themselves well enough. Even if it's just for knowing that you did a good thing you are still doing it for yourself. In my opinion everything everyone does is egocentrical, but it isn't always bad.

in games at least..

because it just doesnt make sense to me to be an asshole for no good reason (and in games there usually isnt)

Ill be completley honest that people with their high intulectual reaons and Nietzsche bullshit...I hate it with a passion

I know that makes me sound like an uneducated fool....but I dont care

but the 1# that drives me insane are similar people istting atop their high hoarse moaning and whining about the downfall of humanity/society and probably having never even done a fucking thing about it (and by that I mean actually be nice for a change)

I do it because its just the right thing to do for a good person with good morality, also going to heaven aint so bad, BUT you dont need to do good deeds to get into it but I dont need to tell ya that.

For all that is good!
