Poll: Why do YOU hate popular music

Having been a member of the Escapist for just over a year, I've loved every minute of it. No forum arguments, all intelligent and funny people, and originality everywhere you look. It's the equivalent of an internet utopia for people like myself.

Since I know for fact that many people on this site have a good taste in music, it pretty much sets them aside from the legions of people who listen to what we consider "popular music." I can't stand what all of these people listen to nowadays, I hate it with every fiber of my being. Instead of endorsing bands or groups of musicians with actual talent, they shell out money for artists with little or no talent and then it gets played over and over again on cheesy radio stations for "cool people" to listen to.

I know, this argument has been pointed out more than almost any other, and it's beginning to have no meaning at all due to mass repetition by the few high school age kids who still strive to find music that they enjoy throughly. According to recent statistics, over 92% of teenage kids listen to rap, hip-hop, or pop.

So, my fellow Escapists, we all know you don't like popular music, but why?

I hate rap because as of yet, it's all about money and hoes and bitches and hoes and "I'm so hood" and hoes etc. It's so damned annoying. The only slightly redeeming aspect is that sometimes the music in the background is nice.

I don't really hate pop, I simply dislike it. I'm ok with it, I can listen to it, but I prefer not to. It's catchy and all.

I don't hate popular music, I try to listen to it when I can, give it the same chance I would any other type of music. Sometimes there's a gem, most of the time it's shit. It's like most things really

I don't hate it at all. In fact, there is some that I actually like. I actually base my likes and dislikes musically on *gasp* my own thoughts and, as such, my tastes are extremely varied. Saying you hate, or even just don't like, something based only on what genre it happens to be in or whether or not it's on top 40 radio is just silly.

Anyways,
For music, I just listen to whatever I like. So I have a wide variety of music I listen to.
Some of that is pop music.
That being said, I do have limits. Nickelback, Linkin Park, Jonas Brothers etc. etc. are not bands I hate for commercial success, but bands I hate because I can not stand their music.
There's unpopular bands I don't listen to either because I can't stand them musically. Cannibal corpse and any band that uses pig squeals in their lyrics comes to mind.

Most of the music that's popular today isn't the genres or styles of music I like.

It's very rare I hear artists I like on the radio, and I'll probably never see them on any popular music channel here in the States.

Because I'm different from other people

My opinion of music is based on the general atmosphere the music creates. If the music could be background noise to something awesome, then the music is good.

So if I'm playing some Classic Rock during a war shootout, or some bass-droppin techno to flowing shots of a cyberpunk dystopia, or some smooth jazz to play ironically to a mafia murder, than you can see why it's good.

Music is meant to be atmospheric. To be audio for something great.

Today's popular music reflects none of that, with people trying to put contrived meaning into their lyrics or just dropping out tunes to dance to. People dancing is not cool, it's boring. Neither do I want to hear about some musician's inner conflict or apologizing to some lost love.

Screw that. I want to listen something I could do badass things to.

That reminds me of a music assignment a friend of mine did, where he wrote "and the sound of people raping is just not that good to me".

I don't like it when people try to tell me about their new favorite band, when I've been listening to them for years. Narcissistic, yes, but it still irks me.

Also, maybe it's only the nostalgia factor, but- IMO- the "mainstream" music of twenty, thirty years ago still kicks modern mainstream music's ass. For instance, at least Freddie was man enough to come out of the closet. Yes, Justin Beaver, I'm looking at you.

Wow, such a horrid typo... Reminds me of a project I had to do a long time ago about Will Smith or something and I mentioned that he was a 'raper' and I couldn't figure out whether 'rapper' or 'raper' was the right one to use >.<
